...known for the controversial way in which it came into the public eye. Late last year, newspapers and music mags alike were littered with articles about Thom and co's 'Big Idea'- to release their 7th album, in lieu of a record label, to the public via their popular website- and all potentially for free. Praise the heavens! The mighty music industry goliaths have been slain!
Although I can happily praise Radiohead for their boldness and ingenuity ... ...Like all the best things in life, this shouldn't come without charge. Here are just some of the reasons why paying for it is better than getting it for free...
So here it is. An absolute cracker. Ever since OK Computer in '97 (in my opinion the most perfect collection of tracks ever printed on one shiny CD) I feel Radiohead have been fighting for a new sound. Though entertaining, Kid A, Amnesiac and Hail to the Thief felt somehow empty. It seemed ...

Advantages: Intelligent music, great singing and guitar work, a complete package Disadvantages: It's not a laugh a minute or light in any sense
In Rainbows is the seventh album from Radiohead, a band who can be classified as alternative, electronic or even prog rock in ambition. Radiohead, probably the only thing to come out of Oxford that isn't associated with mortar boards, smashing the oiks, and posh blokes racing each other on the Thames for giggles. It's hard to categorise them as a band because they have changed their style and sound more times than the average boy band changes their ... ...Club Band” after “Revolver”. In Rainbows can be ranked as one of Radiohead's finest albums. I would argue it is has a more coherent structure than OK Computer, and deeper emotional resonance. It speaks of post millennium angst, suburban loneliness, decaying relationships, it generates computerised landscapes of frustration and emptiness, this is an album Robots would make if they developed artificial intelligence and became sad and melancholic. Unlike ...

In rainbows launched itself on the public with the novelty selling point of paying what you want to download it (before hearing it-obviously) and you have to wonder if that was masking a continued downturn in quality-it wasn't.
The album plays best when listened to from start to finish (whether the one disc or two disc formats) and is amazingly consistant (easily there most cohearant work since ok computor).Highlights do abound though and ... ...in the vien of old school radiohead),nude (old tune thats been kicking around for years that simply melts the heart),reckoner (great percussion),jigsaw falling into place (great intro) and down is the new up (epic in every sense) and bangers and mash (kick arse) from the second disc.
At any point in a career this album would be a highlight but after the slight blips of the previous two albums 'in rainbows' is an apsolute must for any radiohead fan ...

...lost it's way several times. In Rainbows is a more concise album and for the most part shows Radiohead back to doing what they do best - playing great songs on guitars. Opener '15 Step' is really the only track that could fit in during the Kid A era. From then on, 'Bodysnatchers', 'Reckoner' and 'Jigsaw Falling Into Place' are cracking guitar led tracks, 'Faust Arp' and 'Videotape' show Radiohead's mellower side that fans grew to love with classics ... ...be 'Nude' which has appeared in the live set every now and then since the OK Computer era. They say they've never been able to record it properly until now - it's worth the wait. Thom Yorke's haunting vocals with Jonny Greenwood's understated guitar playing show why they never let this track go. If you fell out with Radiohead when they dropped the guitars, this album is the one to remind you just why, in 1997, they were considered one of the best ...

Quick review of In Rainbows - Radiohead
An excellent album which was offered for free on its first digital release.
Its calmer and more balanced than previous radiohead albums...i'd have to say slightly more bland, although Bodysnatchers is full on rock!
best album of the year...yet somehow expected more from radiohead. ...

...universality, which is greatly emphasized in the first song 15 Step. I adore the idea of people always being stuck in circles so they resort to their comforts, whatever they may be. A majority of us are guilty of just that, and so to overcome it, is explained in the songs there-after. Each song is curiously compelling and had me by the tongue, draggine me along whisfully in an airless balloon. No subjectivity, exists within the songs as what is evident ...
