...to appear a lot earlier in an artist/band's career than they should. There are the fans who own nearly all the songs on other albums but buy them to have them all on one CD, while others are perhaps unfamiliar with the artist, and a Greatest Hits album offers a great opportunity to get all the well-known songs together before exploring the back-catalogues.

...that REM are good but in a different way to anyone else.
REM dont fit into any genre of music. Thats one of the reasons I like them.

Disadvantages: Offers little for hardcore fans
...offer my only criticism, so in case this applies to you, you can stop reading now. This album isn't for the 'real' 'hardcore' fans. Besides their new hits, "bad day" and "animal", there really is very little on this album to excite the fans that already have three or four of their albums already. For every other fan of the soft-medium rock genre, this is surely a must buy.
