Advantages: Green Day's best record, a handfull of solid songs!

...titled Dookie hit the shelves, Insomniac was upon the world. Often written off as the group's 'difficult sophomore'(despite the fact it's their fourth LP), Insomniac is surprisingly not a popular album amongst Green Day fans. This is a true punk rock album in the sense of the word. It is short, sweet and very punk. The album starts up with the rather bizarrely titled 'Armitage Shanks'which comes in and sets up what is the album. It is fast and furious and lyrics that are typical for the album that are full of anger and hate that weren't unleashed in 'Dookie'. The main themes of the album are paranoia, isolation, panic attacks (Panic Song) and, as shown through the album title, insomnia. Tracks such as Geek Stink Breath and Brain Stew provide insights into the state of the mind during drug use, presenting the use of drugs such as methamphetamine in a very unattractive light. Ahhh Green Day. Is there one person in the broad spectrum of punk who doesn't hold fond memories of this band? If so, i haven't met them, even the most devout and underground of hardcore scenesters all have a fondness for Green Day. Disadvantages: May not appeal to Dookie fans

Don't expect another Dookie. This album is a different kettle of fish to Dookie. A lot harder sounding and less upbeat than Dookie, it is a true punk album. It is currently in my CD player as I've got very into this album recently. It may not have been as much of a success as Dookie, but in my opinion, it's a superior album. Mnay people may not agree with my opinion but I believe that at the moment they are the best band around and have been for some time now. I also hope they will continue to be for some time now. This was the first Greenday album i ever bought, and after listening to it, I had to go out and buy all the others. The album starts with armatage shanks, a fast lively song with a classic greenday tune and lyrics. After this the songs just keep going, the album really hits you with its pace and energy. 86 is a brilliant song and one of the main tunes of the band. ...pretentious words when at gigs). When Insomniac came out everyone was a Green Day fan - I take credit for that - I played "Dookie" everywhere and told Radio 1 to take note - they did. Advantages: Many Classics, great production
Disadvantages: Not typical Green Day, only avid fans would truly rate

Out of all the Green Day albums to date, this is one of my least favorites of mine and the majority of fans. If i had to be true to myself, I would only really recommend to hardcore Green Day fans like myself as i feel it would not be appreciated as much as other GD stuff. I am a top Greenday fan and own every album album that they have ever released in the UK and can honestly say that this is their best ever. It goes back to the roots of punk with fast loud guitars creating the music for some brilliant and sometimes humourous lyrics.
