It is a very uplifting song, almost gospel in parts with a female vocal chorus. The Letter is about receiving a letter from a lover and being afraid to open it. I first heard about James Morrison when I went to see Corinne Bailey Rae in concert back in April, He was her support act and I have to say he was mind blowing then, even with just a couple of guys supporting him on guitar. Tracks that stood out then are the ones that stand out for me on the album - You Give Me Something (current single) and Better Man (last track on the album). I first heard james Morrison on the Jools Holland Show where he played 'You Give Me Something' and a number of other songs. When I checked him out on the internet and listened to his other songs I made a link between him and Stevie Wonder. Their songs are not at all of the same genre or about the same things, but something in the jazz band and the throaty voice of Morrison reminded me of Stevie. ...to do with love, had been covered. 'Call the Police' is about a man who is so angry he wants to hurt his girlfriend. 'The Letter' is about a girlfriend who wrote to tell him she had been cheating and wanted to break it off. You can't really get the feel of the songs unless you listen, but the way they are sung is so thought provoking and meaningful, that it really moved me. He always really difficult to describe his music to people. It's pretty much guitar blues and soul but listen to his 'Better Man' and make up your own mind. He grew up on artists like Otis Redding, Al Green, Cat Stevens, The Kinks and Van Morrison and always loved songs where the singer would sing with real soul, like they really believed in what they were singing about.
