Advantages: A deep, deep album which you WILL return to Disadvantages: Not easily accessible to casual fans
...song is the 'Zero' of Machina and probably the most accessible for the casual rock fan.
2. Raindrops + Sunshowers - A favorite amongst many-a-pumpkin faithful. A dreamy light album track with some awesome background effects which really make the song title seem appropriate. Billy's voice is another strong feature on this song, powerful but does not overpower the music.
3. Stand Inside Your Love - Being a single should indicate to you that this ... ...the most structured song on Machina with a very slow methodical pace and much lyric repetition. The drums have taken on a very electronic feel for this track and layering effects have been used lots. 6. Try, Try, Try - Another single. The softest of the three Machina singles. The effects on this song have been likened to Abandoned Pools' 'Sunny Days'. Light guitar and drum work have been interwoven with some of the best lyrics written by Mr.Corgan ...

Advantages: Combines the epic sound of their earlier work with the gentle electronica of Adore Disadvantages: Overlong
...Billy Corgan under the title Machina II. The Pumpkins split up at the end of last year, claiming that they could no longer compete with the Britney Spears of this world. The rise of nu-metal of course has made this claim look a little po-faced, but Billy has always been one for the grand gesture. After the commercial disappointment that was ‘Adore’, this album was heralded to a return to the (ahem) ‘rock’ sound of their most ... ...listening to opening track ‘The Everlasting Gaze’ you can understand where it came from. Out of the window goes ‘Adore’s gentle electronic sound, replaced with buzzsaw, industrial guitars. Corgan vocal is even more of a nasal sneer then usual and the bass is turned up to full. Despite this there is an excellent hook in the chorus, which rides in on a swirl of distorted guitar before dissolving back into the main searing riff. ...

Advantages: great all out rock Disadvantages: they're splitting up
All of the Smashing Pumpkins albums have a definition, the dreamy Siamese Dream album, the arty Adore, the bloody marvellous Machina. I do not own the album but have borrowed it from a housemate and it absolutely kicks. I used to be a fan but lost touch with their music when they released mellon...But this, their final album, as the band are set to split is an absolute gem. The drums are handled perfectly and the bass and guitars are so well balanced ...

...on a promo copy of Machina and I have to say it completely blew me away.
The standard of songwriting is incredible, as is the noises that Billy and James get out of their guitars (yeah, so I'm a guitar loving freak. shoot me)
The album has fast become one of my favourites. I even bought another copy of it because the promo had a scratch on it.
I really hope the news about the split is untrue because the next Pumpkins album has the potential to ...

Advantages: superb lyrics Disadvantages: Not enough heavier tracks
Rock is dead! Well that's what Billy Corgan was saying after the release of Adore but it seems by this album, the bands fifth proper studio album that he has changed his mind - well almost. It does have it's heavier moments such as "The Everlasting Gaze", "Heavy Metal Machine" and "The imploding Voice" but it isn't a full rock onslaught like the reviews I have read would have you believe. Not that this is a bad thing it is just that I was hoping ...

Advantages: A few good efforts. Disadvantages: Too long and too much filler
The Pumpkin's fifth album marks a return to form in several respects. Ex-smackhead drummer Jimmy Chamberlain is back in the fold (although original bassist D'arcy Wretzky has been ditched in favour of Hole's Melissa Auf Der Maur, no doubt at Courtney Love's extreme displeasure), and the group have ditched the electro-influence that characterised their last album Adore for the much-favoured heavy rock riffage of Zeppelin and Sabbath. In terms of concept, ... ...Check out the titles: "I Of The Mourning", "Glass And The Ghost Children", "The Sacred And Profane". It lasts for over 70 minutes, and you feel every one of them. There is no room for restraint here; Billy Corgan is obviously surrounded by so many yes-men these days for that. If only it was a few tracks shorter.
That said, first single "Stand Inside Your Love" recalls the sound and quality of classic Pumpkins, and "I Of The Mourning" cries out to ...

Advantages: better than last album Disadvantages: still not as good as "Melan Collie"
This is the fifth studio album to come from this group and it stays true to their tradition of combining loud, heavy tracks with more soothing, lighter, electronic melodies.
After Adore, their previous release, this does have a few outstanding tracks which will sound familiar to fans of their earlier material (notably the epic Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness) such as "The Everlasting Gaze" and "Heavy Metal Machine". The single "Stand Inside ...

Advantages: track 7: heavy metal machine Disadvantages: sometimes you just wish corgan would stop whining.....
This was the first pumpkins album I bought, it caught my attention and certainly made me think about buying the earlier albums. It starts on a high with Everlasting Gaze, a very rocking track, the album starts to mellow ouf after this until you reach track 7, Heavy metal machine, which has a great opening. After this it again mellows out. Although you can see the rock influences again predominating over the electronic aspects. It some respects it ... ...fan then this is good, if not, this will probably not be your thang..... ( In my opinion its probably better than 'Adore' )
This album has a good mix of tracks, some of them being pretty long, so your probably getting your money's worth out of this album. By the way, I love the artwork on the CD itself, the inlay booklet looks pretty slickly put together, with artwork that looks like it could originate from a medieval text book on alchemy.
Basically ...

...and it turns out that machina will be the bands last studio album (there may be an out-takes album later in the year). the album itself is a rapid departure from the bands last album "adore". where that had ballads and pianos, this has rock anthems and heavy drums. many of the songs are very heavy and in some places experimental. although not for everyone, this album will please people who like their drums and guitars loud and proud ...

Advantages: Imposingly sumptous artwork Disadvantages: Not as nice as the old stuff man!
The latest creation from the Smashing Pumpkins is an excellent compilation of some fine songs. "Machina: The Machines of God", produced by Flood and Billy Corgan, has some of the best guitar rhythms I have heard in eons. The first song "The Everlasting Gaze", is an obvious example of this. It starts of with a single guitar playing a riff for what is the rhythm of most of the song. Between these are some amazing drumbeats and solos and the amazing ... ...the Mourning", whose lyrics remind me of Queen's "Radio Ga-Ga" but whose thrashing drum and guitar near the end of the song establish just how talented these people actually are. If any of you are thinking about going out and buying this album, DO! It is well worth it. Also be sure to check out the inside of the front cover for some weird but imposingly sumptuous artwork and the song lyrics. ...

The last album, or so they say. I think this is the pumpkins finest work. Although it does take a while to get into it due to its pure rawnes. I would think that this album would be considered 'classic' in the future. By future i mean 10 years. People wont appreciate it now. The Mix on the album is quite poor, although i am well fussy when it comes to sound quality. Then again, the smashing pumpkins never have a GREAT mix. Theres plenty of strange ...
