First released in 2000 (and subsequently re-released in 2001) it's angry, turbulent and contains some of the most graphic rapping that I've heard for a long time in 'mainstream' music. He's never tried to be mainstream, that's the thing. If he was a mainstream act he'd lose a lot of his appeal; some years ago I'd imagine his work would have been banned for the drug references, ...
...And so starts The Marshall Mathers LP! Eminem kicks off with a track called 'Kill You'. God knows how many times I'm going to use the word angry in this review, but this song is definitely angry. At first listening you'd be forgiven for thinking this was a track about the hate he feels for women in general but listen closely and you'll realise he's talking about his MUM. There's little music as such in this track but it's got a cracking bassline ...

I got this album before anyone else who I know and man I was pleased. The one impression I wound up with from "Slim Shady" was that Eminem was a talented rapper who needed to release another album before I could form an opinion of him - well, here goes. Eminem has seriously deteriorated from the potential he showed on his first album. On "Slim Shady" he was an angry young man with reasons to be angry and the ability to rap about it to a decent standrd. ...
...seems to be angry at absolutely everything and instead of rapping about it he prefers to shout about it. From what I've been able to find out, Eminem came to Dre's attention through his work at the Freestyle Olympics. ...this is what makes 'The Marshall Mathers LP' one of the more interesting records I have heard in recent years. His songs are not wandering and aimless. They 'actually do have something to say!' The rapper obviously views music as an ideal medium through which to voice his opinions on various subjects and he wastes little of the opportunity available to him. To name but a few examples here, we learn about his attitude to obsessive fans, music awards, ...
...industry such as Will Smith and Britney Spears. Unfortunately his (alleged) attitudes to women and the gay community dominate the headlines. He is constantly accused of misogyny and homophobia and he is frustratingly non-committal (although that's probably a good thing) on both subjects. ...of all time by young Marshall Mathers. You have to appreciate the excellent strategic marketing that went into this LP and of course Eminems image on the whole. Kids have been crying out for a bad ass rap artist, one who will tell the authorities where to go, one who will preach violence, and one with commercial appeal.. emphasis on commercial appeal. Of course Eminem isnt the first controversial rapper, hell he still pales in comparison to the likes ...

However, with the Marshall Mathers LP, the same formula was repeated, the lyrics are the same, the beats are similiar and where Eminem sounded amusing previously, he is gradually becoming moanier and more bitter.
