Metallica, one of the greatest bands and biggest letdowns. What are they now but another corporate band? ...to the anthem that is Master of Puppets this is a force to be reckoned with. Burton powers everything home, Hammet curls out demonic riff after riff, Hetfield is , well, a god and Lars drumming holds the hold show together. I consider this to be the only runaway success of Metallica’s career - this was the pinnacle of their greatness - indeed, their only real moment of true greatness. In the early days the vocals were too horrible to stand - nowadays every element of their music is too horrible to stand. This was the middle ground. Master Of Puppets was the first classic album that Metallica produced and unfortunately the last with the late Cliff Burton. It opens with a deceptive gentle acoustic intro to the stomping track, Battery.
