Quick review of Medtner: Complete Works for Violin and Piano, Vol 1 Review ofMedtner: Complete Works for Violin and Piano, Vol 1by

I have heard all the available recordings of Medtner's violin music, including most of the deleted issues, and can confidently assert that this one is the best. The performers clearly have these pieces under their skin and there's a marvellous sense of dialogue missing from some of the other recordings. They are faithful to Medtner's markings, always a sound idea. Recording quality is good and the balance between the instruments is just about perfect.
Medtner's violin music has a directness of expression and may be more immediately appealing than the piano music to listeners unfamiliar with the composer. Volume 2, containing the first two violin sonatas, is equally fine; listeners new to Medtner might be advised to listen to this CD first.
