in 1995, i was a bored ten year old just getting in to music. one day, i was watching mtv when i saw the video for the pumpkins song "tonight tonight". i had never heard of the band before, but instantly fell in love with the song and the video. over the next few months i heard and loved "bullet with butterfly wings" and "1979". they were all fantastic singles. so, i then decided to buy the double album "melloncollie and the infinite sadness". five ...
...28 songs its quite heavy going, but amazingly, there isnt a bad song in there. there are heavy rock songs (like "zero" and "bullet with butterfly wings"), pop songs ("tonight tonight" and "1979") and even some lilting ballards ?("take me down", "to forgive"). this album really is incredible. the lyrics, the music, everything. Unfortunately they chose to make it a double album, and like virtually all double albums I own, I feel that one absolutely great CD could have been made instead of two pretty good ones. R.I.P. Smashing Pumpkins. Now that the gods have split up, we have no more brilliant albums to look forward to. This, being one of there best, is an example of the kind of emotion and beauty the smashing pumpkins can bring to music. A double album is always a hard thing to make and the Smashing Pumpkins have created one with fantastic results. The first CD is filled with their most famous songs, namely,"Tonight Tonight","Bullet With Butterfly Wings" ...
...are "Galapogos" and "Here Is No Why". The Smashing Pumpkins juggle both melody and distortion to amazing effect. The 2nd Disc is also good, though not quite as good as the first. I bought this album a few years ago at the height of my grunge phase and as a big Pumpkins fan I had been waiting a while for this album to come out. At first I thought, WOW! What amazing value - so many songs on 2 CD's for the same price as a normal album. Then after listening to the CD I found myself skipping through tracks even on the first listen and I knew why. After this album I stopped buying Smashing Pumkins albums. Had album been a single ...
...I would still be a Pumkins fan. In this case quality would definitely have prevailed over quantity! I believe the smashing pumpkins reached their peak with this mighty double album, 28 tracks (27 brilliant ones) and at least a couple of hours of excellent music. While the title reeks of concept album the band steer clear of any prog-rock self-obsession and provide their typically varied sound. Saying that there is a theme behind the album - Day (Disc 1 Dawn To Dusk) and Night (Disc 2 Twilight To Starlight). The first side is generally more accessible ...
...breaking straight into the sublime "Tonight Tonight". With the exception of track 10 (which sounds like simply red could have done it) there is not a weak song on this side. Singles on this side also include "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" and the excellent "Zero". What band in their right minds would release their third record as a mammoth double album?! Well, maybe they weren't in their right minds! However much I love this album, I don't think it should have been the double album that it is. There are LOADS of great songs here, ("Tonight, Tonight", "Zero", "Porcelina...", "1979" to name but a few!), but I would rather have seen the really great ones put together on a single CD. ...written by James Iha, is tracklisted after the epic "Porcelina Of The Vast Oceans", and is frankly dwarfed. I don't particularly like "Cupid de Locke", either. the first time i heard the smashing pumpkins was when i decided to download "rat in a cage" off of napster (actual name "bullet with butterfly wing"). the song was amazing! not only was it quiet fast and rocky, but it was also an experience to listen to, like the rest of the album, being deep and meaningful (at some level or other). the album itself is a mixture of fast and slow music in an excellent way. the songs fit well together in the order ...
