4 Stars Anthems for Doomed Youth? Review with images 30/10/2011

Advantages Advantages It's an album with a clear identity and its high energy rawness is thrilling.

Disadvantages Disadvantages A little samey and it's a record which simply would not appeal to everyone.

Just over twenty years ago, on the 24th September 1991, one of the most significant albums in music history emerged from the underground rock scene to become a record destined to be more than just a cult classic. In fact, 'Nevermind' is still celebrated today as one of the most important albums of all time: it infested in the ears of mainstream music lovers and garnered the American trio, singer, song-writer and guitarist Kurt Cobain, bassist Krist Novoselic and drummer Dave Grohl, much unexpected commercial success. Nirvana's first album 'Bleach' failed to make quite the same impact upon its ... more

    Advantages Advantages Classic

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Absolutely none.

Prologue No other album had such a great impact on my life like ‘Nevermind’. It somehow marked the final stage of my quest regarding ‘the perfect music’ for me. I was 14 when I first listened to this album and even now I’m blown away as much as I was the first time. Although this happened in 2004, somehow I’ve always been connected to ‘Nevermind’ as I was born in 1991, the same year Nirvana recorded it, released it and eventually changed the world with it. The music that lied inside that cassette marked me in a very positive way. It changed my mentality, my view on music and it also made me ... more

Advantages Advantages start of the 'grunge' revolution

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Cobain's inner misery

Variation is a big thing in the music business these days. Dare to stick to the same formula for to long and your guaranteed to be disbanded within the next 6 months. Many-a-modern band (linkin park, good charlotte) already receive flack for sticking to the angst filled formula for a mere two albums, petty beyond belief if you ask me. Music is about speaking your mind, and if a band has no wish to be changing it’s mind due to a minority, then it won’t. It was down to this that Nirvana took over the rock world in the early 90’s. ‘Bleach’, the debut release in 1989, showed all the hallmarks of ... more

Advantages Advantages Accessible and barrier breaking

Disadvantages Disadvantages A little too polished

In 1985 Kurt Cobain met fellow Melvins fan Krist Novoselic in Aberdeen, Washington and formed a band. After a series of name changes they finally settled on Nirvana and released their debut album, 'Bleach' (working title; 'Too many Humans') with Sub Pop in 1989 with Chad Channing as drummer (he would later be replaced by Dave Grohl). Listing their influences from a diverse range of musicians including Mudhoney, the Pixies, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, Kurt Cobain sought to create a mixture of punk and pop music. After Cobain's tragic death in 1994 Krist Novoselic went on to form the less ... more

    Advantages Advantages An iconic album

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None!

Ladies and gentlemen, say hello to the cult album that is Nevermind by Nirvana. For those completely unaware of the band, let alone the album, Nirvana were a Grunge band from Seattle during the early 90s. Made up of frontman Kurt Cobain, Kris Novoselic and Dave Grohl, they're widely considered as one of the biggest bands of their generation and genre due to their attitude and songs that hit the eardrums hard being the voice of the 'generation-X'. This is their second album following their debut 'Bleach' released at the turn of the decade, this however launched them to a new market and into the ... more

Advantages Advantages A few big tunes

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Some repetition

“Nevermind” was the 1991 release from Nirvana and finds the Washington-based Grunge band coming with what is considered to be a classic record as the late Kurt Cobain leads them and enables them to push Alternative Rock to success like it had never been seen before once they had dropped “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and everything else fell into place afterwards. It was their second of three albums before the death of the lead singer ad guitarist. 1. “Smells Like Teen Spirit” This, for me, was the perfect way to get the album underway as you find that they throw down a hardcore jam by coming out ... more

Advantages Advantages Great Album That Launched a 1000 Bands

Disadvantages Disadvantages Pretty Much a Blatant Pixies Rip Off

Nevermind hits the three quarter century of reviews on Ciao and I though it would be nice for someone who was actually there to write a review about it. Way back in the late 80’s music was stagnating and there was no good rock music getting to get general public in this country. Hair Metal and Thrash ruled the day, and the days were long dark and horrible. Hair metal was evil and needed to be killed, Thrash had the initial anger of punk but failed to live up to the limited promise that it had. Indie music at the time had too few great bands, rave culture was becoming increasingly moronic, and ... more

5 Stars NEVERMIND (1991) [ALBUM ONLY REVIEW] Review with images 02/10/2006
    User recommends the product

Advantages Advantages Powerful music only matched after its release, but a depth unrivalled to this day

Disadvantages Disadvantages An ironic depth to the album, which many won't or simply can't understand

One of the most wildly misunderstood albums ever. If you think alternative music is nothing but the thrashing of drums, a doggie bag of electric guitar left over from the grand old days of Iggy Pop and The Stooges then only NEVERMIND can prove you wildly mistaken because like all artistic masterpieces it transcends its genre magnificently. The sole reason, with the brilliance of the band that now included David Grohl from the Foo Fighters, came in the form of its constructor Kurt Cobain, an illustriously troubled and thoughtful master of contradictions. 1. 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' This ... more

    Disadvantages Disadvantages ,

Nevermind by Nirvana (1991) Smells Like Teen Spirit- Undoubtably Nirvana's best known song mainly as it toppedthe charts in numerous countries all over the world. Every part of this song is excellent from the skillfull guitar intro which sticks in your head, to the amazing lyrics song sung in Kurt Cobain's classic rugged voice. A classic and a new sound to musicone of my favourite songs of all-time. Favourite lyrics 'I found it hard it was hard to find/Oh well whatever/Nevermind' In Bloom- After Smells Like Teen Spirit sets an amazing trend for this album you would think it would be hard to ... more

Advantages Advantages A seminal album. powerful, damaged, yet still melodic

Disadvantages Disadvantages Fourteen minutes of dead air on the disc before the hidden track.

Has it really been 10 years? I still remember the first time I listened to this album. It was my Dad’s car, and we were racing around the Lake District whilst the stereo was kicking out “Smells Like Teen Spirit” at an obscene volume. This was just prior to my real discovery of music, and the birth of my real passion, but, even to my untrained ears, the sound of loud music coupled with acceleration seemed to evoke something primal. This album, for the few of you who don’t know, was released in 1991, referred to by a few US underground gurus as “The Year Punk ... more
