"Day One" is a bit of a curiosity piece - it lasts just short of two minutes long yet bridges the gap between her folk roots and the much more rock-orientated sound that she'd cultured for this album. There's only the tiniest hint of how good she is with a guitar whilst her vocals shine straight away - almost fragile at the beginning, though never wavering and getting ... ...was the first track that immediately hit me - grabbed me around the throat more like. It hits the ground running straight out of the blocks, wave after wave crashing around your ears, her sublime guitar almost taking on a persona of its own, almost providing backing vocals to Gemma's strong and confident vocals. Get to the second half and there's a treat in store when she alternates the acoustics and ratchets up the tempo to an explosive climax. ...

Advantages: emotive, enchanting and really superb Disadvantages: sometimes slightly too depressing
...single of the same title Night On My Side. All of the songs on the album are extremely emotive and clearly written from the heart. The Mood
The mood of the album is very much melancholy and emotional. It is certainly an album to be listened to aloneand you may well find yourself crying over it. The lyrics of the album widely differ. Some are about breakups, some about violence and some about death, but all are very powerful.
The Artist
Gemma Hayes ... ...in the Republic of Ireland. Before releasing this debut album she played many small festivals and delighted smaller audiences with her talent. These days she is touring Europe and beyond with her band, and playing the larger music festivals. The copy of the album I have is a limited edition promotional copy which doesnt have the leaflet art and information as the retail copy. I am therefore unable to comment on this aspect of the album, but the music ...
