We only buy compilations now if they have some kind of novelty: a 'plot', previously unreleased content, lots of pictures and words in a big booklet. A companion to a book about English traditional music, this gathers interpretations of old songs by US and UK artists from 'old' and 'nu' folk backgrounds, their ages spanning 17 to 70. Established names like Tom Paxton, Shirley Collins, Pentangle rub shoulders with newcomers in Serafina Steer, Lisa Knapp, and James Raynard. Beautifully sequenced, their combined efforts build to a melancholic swell. Artists tell the story of their song in a bumper booklet that's as intelligent and considered as the covers themselves.
