Advantages: Brilliant, energetic music Disadvantages: Disadvantages?!?
...Muse's best album to date; Origin Of Symmetry.
After the general success of their debut Showbiz, this second album raised them into the high-society of headlining rock music acts. After this weekend's show, it's easy to see why Matt Bellamy, Chris Wolstenholme and Dominic Howard are thought of so highly.
Opener New Born, is simply breath-taking. The piano introduction builds the song up perfectly, with Bellamy's eerie vocals - Thom Yorke-esque ... ...all happens. The piano's die down and it comes the electric guitars, with a riff full of energy, rhythm and excitment. From then on the verses keep the tempo up to a fast pace before the crash-bang-wallop of the chorus with Bellamy's cries of "Destroy the spineless, show me it's real. Wasting their last chance to come away." It doesn't matter how often I listen to this song, I cannot get tired of it. And at six minutes longly, it's purely epic.

Advantages: Consistency of tracks, nice guitar work, can be heavy Disadvantages: Overblown? Falsetto overkill?
Origin of Symmetry opens quietly with the piano arpeggios of single, 'New Born'. Note Matthew Bellamy's noisy breath intake (his style). Thankfully, this is a rock record and soon, with a distorted guitar riff he signals the band to do what they do best (that is rock by the way). As the drop D riff relies on a chord progression to get anywhere, none of the parts of the song stood out to me - thus making for a good but not great start to the album.
... ...only acoustic guitar song on Origin of Symmetry is an obvious target for weakest track on the album but the use of guitar scales and percussion (human skulls, apparently) makes it not too bad a listen. As a conclusion, 'Megalomania' doesn't hit you until the chorus with it's pipe organ, though there is a (keyboard) alto sax waltzing about in there, still, with Bellamy's vocal overlays being at their most ambitious it's a nice way for the album to ...

Advantages: Everything Disadvantages: Just a bit long and drawn out.
...to Radioh-sorry, Muse's new album, Origin of The Bends. Or was it Origin of Symettry.
I just bought the new Muse album, Origin of Symmetry. Amazing stuff! I used to be a professional Muse hater, but now thanks to just randomly picking up the new album at my local CD shop (17 miles away...) I am now heavily in to Muse. Many people have described them as being extremely similar to Radiohead's older stuff (eg. The Bends), which I have to agree with. ... ...listenable. Origin of Symmetry does seem very similar to The Bends, and this can only be a good thing. It's a bit heavier, and more radio-friendly than The Bends, and seems just as angsty.
The current singles we have had so far are Plug in Baby and New Born, both amazing tracks. Bliss is also in the grinding wheels of coming out. If like me, you watch quite a lot of music TV (like Kerrang!, MTV2 and Q, not the awful standard MTV pop-tripe), then ...

Advantages: Great tracks which you will come back to time after time. Disadvantages: Leaves you wanting more Muse :)
Here is guitar-based music at an extremely high level indeed.
This is the second album released be this alternative three piece and it only goes to extend there reputation as being one of England best new bands.
The album starts off with New Born, which is a well-crafted piece, which shows Matthew Bellamey putting together a great riff that is backed up by the usual high standard of Chris Wolstenholmes bass lines, this is the kind of song you can ... ...gives you a good jolt of adrenaline.
Next up is Bliss after the initial pulse of New Born this track brings you back to a normal pace again and with some fine keyboard work this is again a gem of a song and after a few plays will become a firm favourite.
Third up is Space Dementia another slower paced piano piece here and with Matthew singing in such manner as a wounded animal (hurt but still able to inflict pain of his on) it can give you Goosebumps ...

Advantages: Heavy rock, light rock, alt rock- a flippin big mix Disadvantages: One weak track :-(
The opener on this album is the highly infectious New Born . This is where you get a small taster of Matt Bellamy's piano skills, it's just him, a piano and Dom on drums for 1:20. Then you get the inevitable transition to guitar and what a sweet transition it is too. This is where Matt exhibits his guitar ability, ok, it's an easy riff but remember, hes playing this through the whole song, which takes stamina. One noticeable thing about a ... ...the bass while the synth work is going on. Dom's Drumming on this song isn't particularly anything to write home about except in the choruses. The intro to Bliss is Matt on his trusty Synthesizer, this synth loop carries on throughout the whole song. One thing that is truly noticeable is Matts songwriting skills, in this it's worshipping/ stalker lyrics everything about you is how I want to be tell me that doesn't sound a bit creepy. ...

Advantages: More muse obviously Disadvantages: too many swirling pianos
...Woolies for the album entitled Origin of Symmetry, I had a mild panic attack when I couldn’t find it! Not to worry it was right there under my nose in bright orange. How could I miss that?! So I picked it up, gazed at the back of it to check it was the right album…yup, Plug In Baby was there. Paid for it, got home, put it in the CD player and pressed play. Oh my, I thought, am I disappointed? Or do I need another listen? Another listen ... ...back with their second album Origin of Symmetry. Their sound has changed somewhat from their last album and perhaps is more experimental and not so bassline heavy as the first album. However Muse more than make up for that with new instruments including Matt Bellamys zipper to his flies. Nice? Ahem…
The songs on this album are a mixed bunch of imaginative lyrics but some tunes are kind of lacking in that Muse trademark hook. I have thoroughly ...

Advantages: stunning album full of impact Disadvantages: might be caught doin air guitar
Anyone who bought the first album 'Showbiz' will no doubt have been dying to lay their hands on this, their second album. Echoing influences of radiohead and jeff buckley, muse have created a stunning follow up packed with dramatic guitar riffs and haunting vocals.
The album starts with NEWBORN. Soft vocals and a magical background give a superb build up to rock classic. Every song seems to contain a unique and easily identifyable guitar riff that ... ...is around. BLISS is best played really, really loud because the whole song is totally full of energy. SPACE DEMENTIA
has a beautiful beginning that even my dad liked! It's rolling piano tunes give the song character and diversity. HYPER MUSIC happens to be my mobile ring tone! Its a great tune that really stays with you and i found myself repeating the tune in my head to continue the effect it had when i first heard it.

Advantages: Expands musical soundscape for non-believers Disadvantages: May take a few listens to really absorb and enjoy
Very rarely does a second album improve this much from it's predecessor. Even rarer when the aforementioned 'debut' is an astounding piece of work in itself. Matt Bellamy has been blessed with both an incredible vocal range and multi-instrumental ability, and showcases it superbly here. 'New Born' is a multi-layered pounding masterpiece with an invincible bassline. This leads us into the dreamy angst of 'Bliss', another epic. The breathless start ... ...turning tune, with a masterfully dizzy chorus, ending with a thundering crescendo, where voice guitar, piano and rhythm section crash into a monstrous wall of sound that almost sounds like a computer screaming as it witnesses the apocalypse! Apparently, Matt's trouser zip was used as additional percussion, which illustrates a welcome bit of playground humour.
As the fuzz fades from that climax, we are treated to the noise and screaming of 'Hyper-music', ...

Advantages: Not enough space to list them all! Disadvantages: The "Radiohead rip-off" claims (don't believe them!)
Origin Of Symmetry is possibly the finest rock album of it's time. It's like a journey through space - it's writing and recording was heavily influenced by Hyperspace, a book by Michio Kaku that explores the origin of symmetry - the beginning of the universe. As soon as you hear the piano intro to first track New Born, you know you're on to something good. If it hasn't already grabbed you by the lapels, wait for the skull-crushing guitar riff to ... ...eases you into another hard rocking track with it's deceptive piano arpeggios, and then by the chorus, the soaring vocals start. Oh my. Space Dementia is a wonderfully creepy piano-based track that oozes venom at the unknown. Then Plug In Baby. Wow. This was recently voted one of the top tracks to play Air Guitar to, and I must admit: It really is. Citizen Erased: 7:19 of utter mindblowing rock. This has possibly one of the best guitar solos around, ...

There are many good songs on the album, I particulty like track 2 Bliss because it has a kind of mellow tune conbined with rock, which successfully works, there are more songs which uses this style.

This is an album that grows on you. First time I heard it, I thought, OK, who gave this guy a kick in an area that should never be kicked? From start to finish its full of crescendoes and surprises. The best track is Plug in baby, a loud, infectious tune which sees Bellamy howling at the top of his skinny lungs. It has one of those choruses that could have you screaming it if you go to see them in concert.New Born is pretty impressive too, starting ... ...guitar rhythm you could bite into. Bliss is a sweet love song with loud guitars as opposed to sappy melodies. Quite a change from the usual dross that some indie-poppers chuck out. However stuck up Bellamy may be, he sure knows how to write and play music. Its something that the Stereophonics will never have, thats for sure! ...

Advantages: Fantastic, consistantly brilliant Disadvantages: Some songs drag on
This album is a definite must for anyone who is into alternative music. The album combines fantastic piano chords with rapid guitar riffs to keep anyone interested. In their early career Muse were stuck with the stigma of being called a wannabe Radiohead but this album has shattered those comparisons as it is, in my opinion far better than Radiohead’s "OK Computer".
It is very hard to pick out the best tracks on this LP as they are all good. ... ...which have all been recently released and also Citizens Erased. Hyper Music was a song that I didn’t much like at first but it has really grown on me and now I would consider it the best song on the album.

Advantages: In my top 5 cd's of all time! Disadvantages: I don't understand, what are they?
AAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!! WOOOOOOW!!!!! YYEEEAAAAHHHHHH!!!!
are just a few of the words i like to say when listening to this album. Muse are the greatest prog rockers ever and have brought new ranges to rock. The three-piece from Teignmouth in England have been compared to Radiohead very early on in their career and were dismissed as just walking in Radiohead's shadows. However after people started atending gigs it started to become apparent that they were ... ...Since 1997 when they first merged their way into the music industry Muse have been going from strength to strength. Throughout this album Matt Bellamy's voice soares through epic realms of enchantment while his guitar riffs are ruggid, original, eratic, and melodious all at the same time. The first thing anyone should do after buying this album is remove the wrapping, hit the eject on your cd player and skip to track 5. Anyone not impressed by the riff on that song, plug in baby, should get their money back immediately. One of the best riffs ever, and a great song to go around it... air guitar heaven. Its is apparently a lot less like Radiohead (although having ... ...song starts with a gentle piano but soon the pace is built up and guitars come in. this is a theme throughout the album, really. It has both fantastic slow gentle songs (screenager), great fast pace, more "rocky" tracks (plug in baby, hyper music), and a great cover of "feeling good". Advantages: Unique sound, great lyrics & fit (good-looking for u oldies!!) band members Disadvantages: Don't be silly!!!
...every indie fan's lips as Origin of Symmetry's release date drew near. What could be expected of kerrang's 'Best British Band of the Year 2001' ??? Well, a fair few months have passed and we are still none the wiser about how they pulled it off; they did it - but how?
Muse have seemed to have broaded their musical spectrum with a less mellow sound throughout the tracks.
Once again, beautiful lyrics accompany the talented musicians with most being ... ...off of this album including 'New Born', 'Plug in Baby', 'Bliss' and the recently released double A side Feeling Good / Hyper Music.
