Culture Vultures - Orson

I may have discovered Orson by accident at first, but it was no accident that their second album came to my attention. Having been impressed by their debut single "No Tomorrow" and then being disappointed that the rest of the album didn't match up to it, I wasn't planning on getting "Culture Vultures". That was until I discovered that the first two singles from it were pretty good and figured that maybe the album would be worth a look as I knew it ...
...last one. The first of these tracks is "Radio", which is an up-tempo, upbeat heavy pop track. The early verses are a little deceptive, being a little slower than the bouncy intro would have you believe, but it picks up later on. It's got quite a driving beat, especially over the chorus, which makes it perfect running music. Review of Culture Vultures - Orson

Orson's first single, released prior to the debut album, was pretty good but the album was a little disappointing. Still, their single got to number one and they picked up a Brit award but it was no surprise when this new album got panned in the (British music paper) NME. What was a surprise was that it is actually quite good, in a bland kind of way. It's easy to see why the NME would hate it - it's easy on the ear but catchy pop. It's not original ...
...you smile and sound good on those new-fangled iPod things. The sound's a cross between those one hit wonder bands from the 70s (Pilot? Jigsaw?) who produced one catchy pop tune and disappeared for ever, and American pop rock in the style of upbeat Billy Joel or even Steve Miller. Mix in a bit of Beach Boys harmony and you've got a nice pop album for which the word "originality" might as well be in a foreign language but it's catchy and likeable ...
