Advantages: Great songs, great band Disadvantages: A bit too earnest
...(virtually) everything. Out Of Time is the band's 1991 album, and while it doesn't have near the instantaneous classic and pull of the superb Automatic For The People set, but it's nevertheless a wonderful, wonderful collection which you?d struggle to find fault with, apart (I suppose) from the boring cover, and boring photos, and boring cartoons on the fold out booklet in the CD. Lord, they're even on Warner Bros, ferchrissakes. Still, boredom and ... ...lost, badly hurt and turned out of the village, like a lost watcher, persecuted by the bigger boys in the class. Losing My Religion has hidden depths of beauty and even merits the flowing, gorgeous strings which never quite overpower everything. No one else writes classic pop rock quite as well as these boys and few use the mandolin as eloquently, at least since Rod Stewart and the Faces in their heyday (sorry, folks, but check out Mandolin Wind, ...

Advantages: Four fantastic songs, Still better than most bands Disadvantages: A lot of fillers, a bit too poppy
I used to think Out Of Time was one of REM's best albums, mainly because my ears were slightly biased due to its great commerical success. However, one day somebody described it to me as "Four good songs and the rest are fillers", and I saw the light...
That statement might sound a bit harsh to some of you...and I suppose it is considering - on the positive side - that the four tracks in question are not good but very good. Though it needs little ... ...REM had considerable success before Out Of Time, especially with Document and Green. However, the album took them to a new plateau of achievment, selling by the bucketload. This is probably due to the fantastic Losing My Religion and the cheesy pop of Shiny Happy People making the album attractive to the masses. Once you actually listen to the album fully you begin to realise that its actually one of the weaker of REM's albums and lacks that special ...

Advantages: Catchy, breezy, R.E.M. at their most accessible best Disadvantages: Perhaps a little patchy
Hailing from the tiny town of Athens, Georgia in America's deep south, R.E.M. have created a legacy as one of the most influencial and biggest selling guitar bands of the past 25 years. Throughout their career, the band have always been characterised by chiming, melodic guitar riffs, and the uniquely intelligent stream-of-conscience lyrics of frontman Michael Stipe. In the band's early years, R.E.M. were signed to the tiny I.R.S. record label, and ... ...muffled, mysterious garage-rock ("Murmur", 1981) with growing confidence and increasing political and social awarness. In 1988, with the signing of an $80 million deal with Warner Brothers and the release of the band's most commerical album "Green" the band had reached a watershed, and were propelled to the status of one of the world's biggest bands. Released in 1991, "Out Of Time" is R.E.M.'s second full-length release for Warner Brothers, and can ...

Advantages: Classic songs Disadvantages: Shiny Happy People
Out of time was the album which turned REM from popular also-rans to worldwide music stars, and rightfully so. The album itself feels folksy containing a high percentage of acoustic instruments including of course the mandolin losing my religion made famous.
The vocal duties are rotated more than on any other release from REM, with Mills singing 2 tracks, KRS-One and Kate Pierson also getting in on the act.
Track by track:
1. Radio Song - Good ... ...trying to take the mick out of the music industry and suceeds well. It's catchy and the rap presents something out of the ordinary for REM (tried again on 2005s Outsiders with even better effects)
2. Losing My Religion - An all time classic! A tragedy it only ever charted at #19 in the UK! Still do date one of the best-known REM songs. The song itself features one of the always welcome appearance from Peter Bucks mandolin taking lead, it comes complete ...

Advantages: Losing My religion Disadvantages: Only 3 good songs
I only bought this album because it was on sale. I do quite like R.E.M. but I hadn't heard of any of the songs on this album except for "Losing My Religion" as I didn't already own this song, i decided to buy the album. The first son was pretty good, but nothing special, and I thought that the others would be better. Unfortunately, after "Losing My Religion" it was worse, a lot worse. Apart from "Shiny Happy People" which is quite good and "Texarkana" ...

Advantages: A mixture of Stipe/Berry/Mills singing. Disadvantages: ??
REM's first album of the 90's, a new decade but still old REM, but this album is still a great. Radio Song opens the album, it is a good song, combining clean reverbed guitar with guitar noises over a simple bass line. A song which starts off on the radio with someone singing along to it- a good start to the album. 2nd is probably REM's most heard/ favourite/ popular song of all time- Losing my religion. this song uses a mandolin as the main instrument, ... ...beat. Stipes vocals are outstanding and makes it one of my favourite songs of all time. Low is a very slow song, deep vocals, an easy bass line, but a catchy tune. Near Wild heaven is sang by Mike Mills, and he really can sing. Its the first of 2 songs sand by him on the album, the second is Texakarna in which he plays a classic Mills bass line. Other songs off this album include Shiny Happy People, with Kate Pearson of the B52's adding vocals, and ...

Advantages: Beautiful harmonies combined with beautiful melodies. Disadvantages: 1 or 2 weak tracks
REM's first album of the 90's is, simply put, an absolute stunner. Songs like Losing My Religion, the biggest hit of their career, and Near Wild Heaven combine Beach Boys style harmonies with wonderful instruments such as mandolin and strings. This album was perfectly timed as it built up to their best cd Automatic for the People, which was voted best album of all time by NME. This album was also up there. This cd won multiple Grammy awards including ...

Review of Out Of Time - R.E.M.
Advantages: Diverse, creative, catchy alternative rock. Disadvantages: Very slightly patchy.
...for the band who started out playing their new style of rock in pizza parlours and rundown churches. 11 years after forming, the greatest musical talent ever to grace the planet (in my humble opinion) are recognised by the world.
Out Of Time is as diverse as any other R.E.M. album, and while not their best work, should definitely be heard. The album starts on a funky note with help from rapper KRS-1. This was the first time any rock band had teamed ... ...off well, Mills' sliding bassline complimenting Buck's chiming arpeggios. This is followed by what is perhaps the bands best known work to date: Losing My Religion. An effortlessly catchy slice of folk-rock with off-kilter instrumentation by the wonderfully talented Peter Buck. Sandwiching this pop triumph is Low, a darker, more thought-provoking track, which rolls through its verse happily enough but suddenly explodes into the chorus with sweeping ...

Advantages: Lots of excellent tracks, versatility, Michael Stipe's singing Disadvantages: A few indifferent tracks
Out of Time was the 1991 release which saw REM’s explosion onto the world stage.
Featuring songs of the likes of “Radio Song”, “Near Wild Heaven” and “Shiny Happy People” it boasts songs of a superb quality, although it is a lot less heavy than the band’s recent releases.
Of course the most famous song on this album is “Losing My Religion”. It is possibly the strongest example on the album of singer Michael Stipe’s ability to make a song come alive. ...

Advantages: REM before the angst overload Disadvantages: Sounds slightly dated
'Out of Time' must rate as one of the best R.E.M. albums and arguably as one of the greatest albums of the 1990’s, this is REM at their best. Part of the beauty of this album is the real diversity contained in the playlist. Since this album REM have become increasingly downbeat in their music and lyrics, seemingly ashamed to be upbeat and positive in any of their music, whether this is middle age, a sense of guilt or embarrassment at the financial ... ...the times where cynicism and pessimism are the fashion I couldn’t say. What is for sure though is that ‘Out of Time’ marks the last time that you hear REM in their naked pop mode for tracks such as the incomparable ‘Shiny Happy People’. The other track recognizable to anyone on this album is the brilliant ‘Losing my Religion’ but these two tracks represent just the tip of the iceberg, the whole album is just magic. Great listening, ...

Advantages: Great diversity, songs like Losing My Religion Disadvantages: Radio Song, and it takes a while to love
...the world's greatest bands. Although Out of Time is not on the same plane as Automatic for the People (not many albums are) it is still better than much of the crap that is out there. I bought this albumn for the excellent Losing My Religion, one of my favourite songs. The edgyness of the lyrics such as "thats me in the corner, thats me in the spot light, losing my religion" combined with Stipe's fantastic voice make this one of R.E.M's best. The ... ...song laced with sarcasm. The Happy tune brought down to earth by the scarcasm in the voice and the words. Originally these were the tracks that grabbed me most. But this is an albumn whose brilliance will grow on you. Country feedback and Low are outstanding and extremely different songs showing R.E.M's diversity superbly well. Please do not be put off by the opening track "Radio Song" its one bad song on a great albumn. ...

This has to be all-time classic album, as it includes the hits Shiny Happy People, Losing my Religion and Radio Song. It does have loads of other good songs such as Low and Me In Honey. ...there are not many stand out tracks on the album. Shiny Happy People, Texakarna, and Losing my Religion are the only ones that I actually like, and listen to. All the others are very samey, and middle of the road. Radio Song is pretty good as well, BTW.

Out of time, by R.E.M. This album is a must for anyone who is remotely interested in this style of music. I bought It mainly for ‘Losing my religion’, I wasn’t disappointed it is the best track on the album. The others aren’t that bad either like ‘Shiny happy people’.
