Review of Parachutes - Coldplay
As a debut album, 'Parachutes' really couldn't be much better. The latest single 'Yellow' is probably the best song overall, with 'Shiver' not far behind, but my current favourite is actually 'Don't Panic', the first track - it sets the tone for the whole album, with great lyrics and of course Chris Martin's chillingly effective voice. For any fans of indie, this is an essential buy, since the quality of the songwriting hardly drops. My only ( very ...

Review of Parachutes - Coldplay
Coldplay have recently made their appearance in the UK with their debut single Yellow. The video is very low budget, all it entails is the rather ugly lead singer walking along a beach singing the song wearing the world's worst anorak. But I suppose that the group did not know how well their song was going to do so the poor quality video can be excused... But the song itself is catchy. It is not the type of music that I would usually listen to, some ...

Review of Parachutes - Coldplay
Advantages: The talent is obviously there Disadvantages: Depressing, short, morbid, boring
What is it with the current deluge of slash-your-wrists indie rock bands? First Travis squealed on like a big girl about it always raining on them (fight back the tears) and then every other Verve or Radiohead wannabe band followed suit. Coldplay are the latest in the line with their 41 minutes of teenage angst Parachutes. Sure it's thoughtful, yeah it's lyrically diverse, but bloody hell it's depressing. Singles Shiver and current fave Yellow are ...

Advantages: the singles, past present and future. Disadvantages: the slower tracks - mediocre I'm afraid
...a younger Travis. Having heard Parachutes its clear they are a better band, with a better songwriter. They are capable of tackling melancholy issues, in the same way that Travis do, but, unlike their peers, they don't sound dull or dreary.
Opener 'Don't Panic' is beautiful, reminiscent of 'Unforgettable Fire' era U2 - its only downfall is that it's too short. Former single 'Shiver' is the closest thing Coldplay get to urgency, but that's not the ...

Review of Parachutes - Coldplay
Advantages: Absolutely mezmerizing Disadvantages: you have to stop playing it and do something
There are hints of Nik Drake haunting, sensouus, melancolic, an Oasis ballard (except Coldplay can sing) but then there's a more soulful undertone. His voice is beautiful, ranging pitches, catching moods; the words are intimate, raw. Whether you are listening to "trouble", "yellow", "spies" or any other track you feel warmed by this voice and you'll want to play it again, straight away.
Each song is similar, yet different and you'll be hard pushed ...

Review of Parachutes - Coldplay
Advantages: Great contrast of songs Disadvantages: There are only 10 tracks on the album
They are widely regarded as being the new Travis of the millenium, and it's easy to see why because both groups share similarities: they are both guitar bands who make indie/alternative music. But luckily I am a huge fan of Travis so I had a feeling that this album would be at least worth a listen. But when you listen to it once you have to listen to it twice, and then a third time, and then a fourth time, not because it's a hard album to get into ... ...released from this album was Shiver, a song which I never heard of until I bought this album. I don't remember it getting any airplay or anything which I can't understand why because it is a great song. It was the second single, Yellow, which really put Coldplay under the spotlight, and made all lovers of real music stand up and take notice. The third single, Trouble, was what made me buy the album because it truly is a beautiful and a lyrically ...

...Equal parts delicate and distressed, Parachutes is a remarkably assured debut from a group who have filled a void in producing emotional music with a passion and intensity few around at the moment can rival. I am loathe to compare their sound to any other groups, but as far as the emotive aspect goes, think early Embrace, think Puressence, think Geneva. As far as this last reference point is concerned, whilst Chris Martin's voice doesn't have the ... ...beautiful and genuine for it.
This is not to denigrate the rest of the group. The vocals are complemented by something very special as far as the music is concerned. Yearning acoustic guitars complement the occasional piano on the more reflective moments, rasping guitars cut the soul on the more savage emotional moments.
You have to buy this album. Coldplay are already huge, since there is such a massive vacuum of this type of music at the moment. ...

Advantages: A masterpiece Disadvantages: Some people may not like the melancholy
Parachutes is an album full of variety, despite having in my opinion sombre songs with provcative lyrics, it is so easy to listen to, and so relaxing too.
When I first heard Coldplay, I knew they could be big, Shiver combines thought provoking lyrics, well sung and blends beaufifully with the varied music. Then they released Yellow and that was genius, revealing their talent even more so, plus a seriousness about them, then subsequently Parachutes ... ...was talking about them. Then Trouble was released, and that was sombre, yet so awe inspiring.
I think this is a must have album for those that consider buying this for xmas, even the b-sides are excellent, Coldplay know how to rock, and they do it intellignetly.
All in all Coldplay are one of the more innovative brit-rock bands, who have an excellent attitude... ...

Advantages: The saviours of Indie music Disadvantages: or maybe not
...guitar riffs and swishing percussion, Parachutes is a delightful introduction and also quickly indicates the reason why this album earned Coldplay a Mercury Music Prize nomination in fall 2000. Frontman Chris Martin's lyrical wordplay is feministic in the manner of Geneva's Andrew Montgomery, but far more withered. The imagery captured on Parachutes is exquisitely dark and artistically abrasive, and the entire composition is tractable thanks to gauzy ... ...basic pop is surely a refreshing effort in the face of big productions like the Spice Girls and Westlife. Parachutes deserves the accolades it has received because it follows the general rule when introducing decent pop songs: keep the emotion genuine and real. And Coldplay has done that without hesitation. ...

...Music Award. Their album Parachutes didn't win there but did get the Q awards album of 2000.
On receiving the album, i was a slightly worried to find the album was only 40 minutes. Usually, most of my stuff is over 55 minutes on average. But all ten tracks are fantastic beyond all belief, so it's worth it. The songs are expertly concocted, and the vocals of Chris Martin are sublime. My personal favourites on the album are Spies and High Speed.

This is the best album of the year, well crafted with some haunting tunes that keep you playing and playing this CD. The well known track Trouble, is excellent and is the best tune on the album, but the other songs are up to the standard of yellow and there is not one weak track. If you have not heard Coldplay, then the best description is like Radiohead at their peak, but not as depressing and far easier to listen too. It is not rock music, indie ...

...Tracks to note on Parachutes must include the singles Yelooow and Trouble, with that fantastic piano that moves you every timeFrom Don't Panic Right through to the end track Everythings Not Lost will impress you.
And that final track of the album is the finest moment of all, it is so touching and amazing, it beats all those stupid, nonsence pop music tracks hands-down(what are Westlife, A1, etc all about anyway?....Very bad!!)
Only disappointment ...

Right. This is a long overdue rewrite of my very first opinion entitled “Overrated one-hit wonders”. Original title still holds true but thought the new one catchier.
First up. Usually write my music reviews (OK they’re the ONLY ones I write at present) with the subject matter playing through headphones. This helps me to search for literary inspiration as I listen. Slight problem here. Can’t bring myself to subject my CD player to this pap one more ... ...musical differences a la John and Paul, Richard and Nick and Bjorn and Benny. And I can’t afford a replacement. So instead I’ve got the tracklisting before me as an aide memoire, whilst listening to some decent stuff to keep me sane(Spiritualized, as it happens). This shouldn’t prove too much of a disadvantage as it will serve to remind me of how great the chasm is between inspiration and Chris Martin.
Down to business. I think it was Alan Magee ...

Advantages: easy listening Disadvantages: could do with being longer
One of the best debuet albums for a long time. Coldplay quickly steped out of the shadow of Travis and Radiohead who the music press tried to put them in a box with and became a great band in there own right. The signs were good on the early releases of the blue room and safety eps but the album exceeded all expectations with a much more mature feel to it that would take other bands several albums to get. It has a very mellow laid back feel throughout ... ...There could be any number of singles off this album though with no particularly week tracks on it, the title track could do with being a bit longer though. Lyricly it is a very good album as well, Chris Martin has written very honestly on songs like Trouble and everythings not lost and they are easy to relate to for the sensetive male everywhere.
If you are a fan of people like Travis, the beatles, stereophonics etc or if you have heard the singles ...
