Advantages: original music for once Disadvantages: a little depressing
Winner of the best album at the Q awards in 2000, coldplay deserve credit just for bringing `real` music back to the charts. It`s refreshing to see a young band write music for enjoyment and get the countries attention. Today`s music is so marketed it`s nice to have some genuine quality. Thsi album is not the greatest thing you will ever hear but it is definately one of the better album`s that has been released in the last few years. It has the well ... ...of the album but there are also other good songs.`Don`t Panic` is short and sweet. It has a catchy melody and is not the usual first track you would expect on a album. Tracks 3+4 are also credible songs, especially `spies`, but they cast a dull mood over the album. Most tracks are quite depressing and is not the ideal choice to cheer you up, but if it`s original music you want this is the album for you. It is very radiohead influenced and can be ...

...up with equal parts reasons to be cheerful and seriously depressed. Not that Parachutes is a depressing album; there's too much conviction to the guitars and hope in Martin's words for that. Instead it's a beautifully tender balance that comes as close to perfection as anything that's come before it. ...

Advantages: Very good album Disadvantages: Either like it or hate it
An inspiring album, one of those anyone will like, similar to artists like Travis or or maybe Abba. The album create a soft moody feel, but very solid. Some outstanding melodies. I bought the album having only heard one of their single "yellow", and I knew I would enjoy it, from past experience.
If one likes the kind of musics from Travis, Radiohead, Pulp, Mercury Rev, Black box recorder, should certainly buy this.
Although, it is one of those ...

Advantages: Catchy songs. Disadvantages: Not enough tracks.
I bought this Album for two reasons: 1. I liked the songs Yellow and Trouble, 2. It was on offer! But I am impressed with the other songs on this album. I don't have many CDs so if I buy one it has to be worth it. The songs are very inspiring and seem to be in the same league as Travis. The lyrics are very good and the tunes relaxing. However, I do think they could have put more tracks on the CD to make it more value for money. This is a very good ...

Advantages: Fabulous well crafted tunes, full of emotion Disadvantages: A little short, 40 mins, WE WANT MORE
...quality of the songs on Parachutes is a vast improvement. The songs tug on your heart strings and the emotion eminated by the Chris Martin's voice has to be heard to be believed. The singles Shiver and Yellow are both prominent but the stand-out tracks are Spies and Don't Panic, both well crafted accoustic tunes which are stunning in their simplicity. Coldplay are NOT the new Radiohead, they are Coldplay...go buy the album, it's only £11, stick it ...

Coldplay’s album ‘Parachutes’ must surely go down as one of the albums of the year. The released singles in actual fact give quite a poor indication of the style of the album; the big guitar riffs of ‘Yellow’ and volume of ‘Shiver’ not really matched again on a truly superb album. Instead, Coldplay choose to use a much more melodic and ‘chilled out’ approach, with highlights ‘Trouble’ and ‘Everything’s not lost’ taking a much more subtle sound. A ...

Advantages: not a bad song in sight Disadvantages: definitely none
It's hard to believe that only a few months ago I saw Coldplay, then virtually unknown, playing as the support band to Muse at the Astoria. I was really impressed by their music and decided to get their album as soon as it came out. Not only is their music great, they seem genuinely stunned by their sudden fame and come across as just ordinary guys you wouldn't notice in a crowd. Chris Martin (lead singer) just rambles about not much at all when ... ...but then they start playing and it's amazing how good they sound. After seeing them headlining the shepherds bush empire I'd reccomend to anyone to go and see them. If you can't get to a gig, at least buy their album. The lyrics are really moving, and it's well balanced with every song a potential classic. It's just what you need after a long day. ...

Advantages: Good relaxing songs Disadvantages: Its all too short
Back in the summer of 2000 the song Yellow came out. It was one of those songs that you could just lay back and relax to.
A year later I just scraped enough money together to finally buy the album. The first thing that you notice about the album is how few songs there are on it. It only has 10 but these are 10 of the best songs you will ever hear.
The rest of the album carries on where Yellow left off, it is perfect for just sticking on in the ... ...your troubles. Talking of trouble, it's one of the songs that is on the album. This song is really a love song that is saying that he never meant to harm a person. Its a good one to play if you've gone and messed things up with your girlfriend then. The song that I like best on it is Don't Panic. It was never realeased as a single but recieved massive airplay a few months back. It's quite a short song but it has this great beat in the background.

Advantages: Great vocals and resilient melodies Disadvantages: You can't get the songs out of your head
Seeing the video for ‘Yellow’ first introduced me to Coldplay. The gentle quality to the vocals added a vulnerability and evocativeness that I found captivating. The song itself – ‘Yellow’ - was emotive and yet uplifting. And, so hungry for more, I waited eagerly to buy ‘Parachutes’ when it was released. There are atmospheric, dark songs like ‘Spies’ and, lilting songs which tap into the soft part in us all like the floating ‘Sparks’…*WARNING* do not listen to ‘Sparks’ if you are emotionally tender – you may shed a few tears. The melodies take up residence in your head and you’ll be converting all those around ...

Advantages: polished, subtle and a few brilliant tracks Disadvantages: all the rest are pretty pants
Although Coldplay's Parachutes has undoubtably been a best-selling success, there have inevitably been varying opinions of the band's talent.
To me, the album is a slight let down. Certainly there are good tracks on the cd, most notably Yellow, Coldplay's brilliant previously released single. Also featuring highly are Shiver and Trouble, two more fine songs. Subtlety is well emplyed by Coldplay, and there's certainly nothing rebellious about their ... ...your parents, that's for sure, and their songs gently flow over you, rather than blasting you into a higher state of mind. The musical style and lyrics may be simple but the songs have an evocative power of their own, definately more suited to a gentle afternoon in front of the tv than anything else. The album's other tracks, are unfortunately not as memorable as they should be. Most are uninspiring, perhaps unoriginal and to say the least a little ...

Advantages: several good songs Disadvantages: track order poor
This album recieved a lot of praise when it was released, and I bought it on merit, expenting something very good indeed. unfortunately, this is not amazing, but actually a fairly good lesson on how not to construct an album.
It's not the actual songs which are badly put together, it's the order. 'Shiver' and 'spies' are too long too soon, and they kill the album. By then you want something snappy to get you interested again, but you intead get ... ...alliteration?) a great song, but it's all too much too soon. once the superb 'Yellow' waltzes in uninvited, it's all a bit overcooked. this leaves the rest of the album in the lurch, and, despite the excellent 'we never change', it ends badly with a very average last song in 'Everything's not lost' and a pretty poor 'hidden' track. It's perhaps too short, but really, a bit more thought should have been put in to the order, perhaps putting Yellow ...

Advantages: great listening and easy to listen to Disadvantages: It can get boring and slow in parts
I bought this album after hearing Yellow by Coldplay and I was quite impressed. The music is relaxing and starts off with a fantastic song called Don't Panic, which is soon to be realeased as their next single.
I had never heard of Coldplay until their first single, and they are said to be the next big thing to hit the music industry.
There are however a few songs on the album which aren't quite up to my standard of music and let the album down ...

Advantages: yellow is the standout song. There are a few other good songs. Martin has a very distinct voice. They are a likeable band Disadvantages: Songs can be a bit boring. Only ten songs on the album as well
...rise, although their debut album Parachutes while good lacks a certain cutting edge. The bands single "yellow" is the standout track on this album. The other songs border on good and middle of the road. The music itself is very slow paced, there definitely just needs to be a "Come On" track on this album. A very hard paced, get your juices flowing, raw number is sorely missing.
The music scene is so manufactured at the minute that any half decent ... ...did would have been embraced with open arms much like Coldplay have been. To their credit lead singer Chris Martin has a very distinct voice and songs like trouble show their musical originality and potential genius. Rude, Vulgar Rock 'n' Roll bands like Oasis who drink, swear and generally get headlines seem to be out of fashion these days. Coldplay seem to be your slightly more likeable band.
