We are all used to hearing one band or other be touted as the "latest and greatest" thing on earth. The more you hear the use of the label, the less attention you tend to give. However, the English band Coldplay are much more than the moniker suggests. With "Parachutes", Chris Martin and his bandmates prove to be more than a Radiohead wannabe. His voice only bears a passing resemblance to Thom Yorke's own. With songs like "Shiver" and "Yellow", he ... ...Speed" and "Don't Panic" lets the listener in on the universal secret: Life can be made better. Being an eager music fan, I know that there are always new bands coming out, and the inevitable comparisons will be made. With this CD, Coldplay show that they have a future. Run, don't walk, and pick up this CD. The mellow vibe on this album guarantees ...

After hearing Yellow I thought "I've got to buy this album", and am I glad I did. This is a band destined for greatness if they don't go through the oh so common self destruct cycle. Yellow and Shiver have both done well as singles, but the whole album is equally as good. The only complaint would be that there aren't more tracks on it, though this is hardly a gripe. The music is the same sort of pace as Travis, but just has something extra going ...

Advantages: chilled but with a groove you can get into! Disadvantages: a bit short
This album is a new take on old sounds, from bands such as radiohead, pavement in some ways and mercury rev even! it is chilled, but also can be jiggled and sung along to. All the singles are excellent but aren't even the best songs on the album, my favorite being Spies. The album is a little short and you do feel slightly anticlimatic when it comes to the end, but on repeat you never get bored of it, even though its only about 45 minutes long. It ... ...the songs flow really easily, but dont manage to sound the same throughout, like At The Drive-In's Relationship Of Command. This album completely blows, middle of the road, crappy indie bands like Travis out of the water and should manage to put trendy, poppy b****cks such as S Club 7 back in their rightful place- the job centre. It may not be a new sound but it is definaetly a new spin on an old sound and needs to be checked out by anyone with a ...

Advantages: Latest offering from Indie music Disadvantages: Too much like the others
Every year it seems an indie band is elevated to mainstream status and given a shot at the big time. It began with Oasis. A couple of years ago it was The Verve. This year the 15 minute spotlight has fallen on a band called Coldplay, whose single "Yellow" recalls the glory days of the early 90's brit pop.
Unfortunately "Yellow" is the hardest song on what is mainly a very mellow album, and is not typical of their style overall. In fact some of the ... ...like background cocktail bar music. The Radiohead influence comes via the jangley, reverb heavy guitar lines; a sound so imitated since OK Computer as to be almost verging on cliche (it's appears on nearly every song!). Chris Martins singing fairs better in the originality stakes. With his overenunciated vocal style, punctuated by frequent octave leaps (an indie version of yodelling?), he manages to transcend the immediate Thom Yorke comparisons ...

Advantages: nicely chilled out music. good for smoking to and thinking about things on a park bench. Disadvantages: not enough songs - 10 on the album. I prefer around 13
I think I remember vaguely hearing Shiver when it came out, but I was probably to busy to do take much interest. It was not until I heard Yellow on the radio many months ago (it is now July 2000) that I was hooked. I happened to be recording the radio as Lamacq on Radio One introduced a live set from Coldplay, from which I was able to get firm impression of the the rest of their music and by a bizzare set of circumstances I found myself watching ... ...time I new they were going to be big and as I trundled off to Glastonbury, they were one of the top three bands I wanted to see (also Idlewild and Bowie if you're interested). What I found watching them live was that not only were they highly skilled at replicating their sound live in front of thousands of people, but they were the best band I saw there at communicating with their audience (poss. exception of Travis). All too often, a band came on, ...

Well after all the hype Cold Play released their debut album and it shot straight to number one and it deserved it too.
The album has hints of past greats such as The Smiths, Morrisy and more recent bands such as Radiohead and Shed Seven.
Although there are only 10 tracks on the album it is definately money well spent. Another UK band following the mould of other bands yet bringing fresh and unique outlook on things. The voice of the lead singer ...

Advantages: Don't Panic, Everything's Not Lost Disadvantages: Shiver
Are Coldplay the saviours of British guitar music? Well, sort of...
It starts out wonderfully with the sublime "Don't Panic" featuring the chorus line "We live in a beautiful world...yeah we do, yeah we do" and, just as you are starting to believe them, they go and hit you with the really quite dreadful single "Shiver". I can't help but think that if this song had been released five or ten years ago, when guitar music was in a better state, it would ... ...the better, though, with "Spies", "Yellow" and the fantastic "Parachutes". A glimmer of hope for the future is saved for last with the uplifting "Everything's Not Lost" leaving you in a good mood. Just one question though: after creating the perfect end-of-album atmosphere, why go and ruin it by sticking some throwaway "hidden" track on the end?
Coldplay, then: not really saviours but a jolly nice listen. ...

Advantages: The lyrics and music Disadvantages: I'm still thinking of one
I bragged like hell when I got this album three days before its release date, but I was the only person in my group of mates who had heard them! NOW, everybody has heard them play, whether it be on the radio or TV. This is one of the most inspiring albums of the year. I was hoping that the lyrics would be as deep on the album as they are in 'Yellow' and I was not disappointed. Chris's vocals have such a fantastic range on them, it seems that he his ... ...sings.
The album comprises of mainly soft-ish songs, apart from perhaps, 'Yellow', which did disappoint me at first, but once I got over that aspect, I fell deep into the realms of the lyrics, and didn't come back until I had stopped listening to it, and even after that they were still with me as I walked down the street.
The album has been nominated for the Mercury Prize award (won by Badly Drawn Boy) and won the Q Award for the best album, very ...

Advantages: It has everything an album needs Disadvantages: none
In not really listening to it the first time around, I didn't really give it much thought. I had heard Yellow on the radio and I grew fonder every time I heard it. But the album is seriously, something else. The opener, Don't Panic combines beauty with energy, and finishes far too early for my liking. Shiver gets better every time I hear it, even after 20 plays, Spies has the most infectious riff I have heard in years. Sparks is a highly romantic ... ...I write it) "slow dance" song ever. Trouble is the greatest single to grace the Autumn charts yet. I find myself singing Yellow drunk with my mates! If you think the whole CD is too depressing, then you obviously haven't bothered to listen to the end to Everything's Not Lost - one of the most hope filled pieces of music ever. Those music journalists who dared to rubbish this album obviously have no soul. I guarantee this album will be one of the ...

Advantages: amazing simple spellbinding Disadvantages: bit on the short side
While shorter than your average musical fare this band's debut album compensates for having only a few songs by only including great tunes. An album of two singles and 10 fillers this isn't. In places a touch melancholic, in places overly so. All over a melodic and touching album built around simple yet stunning guitar and vocals. The rhythm section are exactly where they need to be and perform an excellent role of complimenting the deft guitar, ... ...listen to, guitar based music, with echoes of the House of Love's debut from the late 1980's, and moments of early Verve. However, this band have taken their influences and crafted a gorgeous album for the future which sounds like no other current bands. If you are one of those unlucky souls who listens to Radio 1 during the day you will probably have heard the second single Yellow about 30,000 times by now, but don't let that out you off. There ...

I'd recommend this album to big fans of Coldplay as i think all the best songs lay on this album. 'Don't Panic' is short, sweet and contains great atmospheric guitar akin to mid eighties U2. Almost like a suicidally depressed The Edge. But that's not to say the song as a whole, or indeed the entire album, is at all depressing. I find it really uplifiting, and even though the tracks taken as singles have been played and played to death by the radio, especially 'Yellow' they still sound amazingly fresh. 'Spies' takes you on a journey, it evolves ...

...to criticise Coldplay for this. Parachutes is an excellent debut album - both the lyrics and music are consistently good. The songs sound even better live - Chris Martin's voice is strong, and along with his piano playing it makes songs like Trouble sound even more beautiful.
