...To celebrate their 40th birthday, Radio 1 released a CD of cover versions. Cover versions, often seen as a boil on the backside of the music industry, draw many opinions. I don't mind them, but very, very few are better than the original. ...I don't listen to the radio anymore, so that's probably the reason for this. The front cover depicts a huge number 1 (the number, not urine) with 4 music-playing appliances, from the past 40 years, surrounding it. Quite a good use of imagery, I felt; indeed, the inlay card, depicts a timeline of the past 40 years, including notable events in Radio 1's history, and dotted around, a few of the songs from the album. After reading the paper the other week I was intrigued to read that various so called superstars had done some cover versions of famous hits. Not usually my cup of tea I might add, but since my son's girlfriend had bought him a copy I thought I give it a listen. There are 40 tracks on the two CD compilation, but quality wise I quite comfortably reduced that to a few tracks which caught my ear. Others amused slightly and some did not seriously get ...
...it was the artists whom I had already written off that surprised me most. The like's of Paolo Nutini totally shocked me since his version of the Madness song It must be Love turns out to be one of the better renditions in the collection. I had thought that since quite a few of the featured artists were not my kind of thing I was not going to be totally subjective about the album, but again I was pleasantly surprised. When I first heard about this, I was a bit sceptical, as I tend to think that original songs are always better than the re-makes. However, I am pleased to say that I have been proved wrong by this wonderful, wonderful album. I love most of the artists and songs on this CD, and now I like some songs that I didn't before. It's so different to the other albums I own, and there's pretty much something for everyone on this disc - it's so varied, but that's ...
