THE BEATLES: REVOLVER
WHERE THIS FITS INTO MY BEATLEMANIA MONTH OF MAY:
Possibly the Fab Fours greatest album...ever?!
- - - - -
It is often argued by critics and fans alike that the Beatles produced two albums that are so evenly matched in terms of variety, quality and overall evolution of the bands music that it is difficult to tell which one is seen as the best Fab Four album of all time. Those two albums are 'Revolver' and possibly the more ... ...Band'.
It is understandable why people feel that way; both albums portray a significant step in the bands song writing abilities, with John Lennon and Paul McCartney, who had for the most part crafted their songs together, were coming into their own and producing music which would later become trademarks of their solo work. Then there was George Harrison who perhaps hadn't been given much of an opportunity to display his talents away from playing ...

Advantages: Accessible, charming music. Essential listening if you like sound. Disadvantages: It's cut and paste in style, sometimes dated, and there is filler
...until about three years ago. Revolver and Rubber Soul came to my attention last year, and I have yet to listen to Abbey Road, The White Album, or any of the early stuff. It's a jumble, essentially, is what I'm saying here. I know the songs, but not the context.
Which means I can criticise away as much as I want. Revolver has a concise format, with most of the songs knocked down to around 2-3 minutes each, with nothing particularly long. That's not ... ...Rigby' respectively, are what make Revolver worth listening to even now. If you try and ignore the nostalgia that is invariably attached to anything they did as a partnership, then you'll find some superb arrangements at play here, which are bolstered by strong, free-wheeling lyricism. The heartbreak that comes into most of McCartney's songs is in full display on the album, as is the slightly jaded cynicism that comes with a lot of Lennon's work. ...

...of an exception, because this revolver would have been the only album released by the band this year. The reason, they were very tired. 1965 hapened to be a good year, with this great 'Rubber soul' and of course, with full stadiums at every concert. Also 1966 started good. But it was also a weird year, with lots of problems, like a whole country against them (political reasons), the church against them (Lennon said the beatles were bigger than Jesus ... ...really said), they were threatened to be shot at some performance, they play at some sacred japanese building so Japanes people got mad about it, and some stuff like that. That's why they decided to take a break, a six months break, just after releasing 'Revolver'. Thats why every one thought the beatles were spliting, but the thing is that they were just resting...and thinking about their future. In that future, there were no concerts, no touring. ...

...example of that approach. Revolver was in many ways then the end of the first successful part of the band's career, a veritable watershed and historically vital even if it wasn't as good artistically as it actually is.
I'd strongly, strongly advise you to check out this wonderful piece of rock art - you'll love it...

Advantages: Diverse Disadvantages: Paul McCartney in love
I was born in 1975, after Paul McCartney stopped being the cool, drug abusing Beatle and when he was the soppy, bagpipe-loving member of Wings. I think this is why I managed to go 20 years without properly listening to a Beatles album, when I did though I was hooked.
This is probably my second favourite Beatles album, the top place going to the White Album and I feel will appeal to lovers of most kinds of music. For those that like guitar-based ... ...Beatles as they are the originals and I feel they did it best. Those that don’t like Travis, Coldplay etc. don’t worry the Beatles covered such a range of styles it’s amazing and something that doesn’t really happen in modern music. For lovers of house/trance/techno of particular interest will be Tomorrow never knows a trippy tune that is said to be the first ever prog. house has influenced many artists.

Forget Sgt. Pepper's. Revolver is without a shadow of a doubt the best Beatles album of all. Following on from the first signs of subversiveness that were evident on their previous effort (Rubber Soul), Revolver saw their creativity and experimentation reach an all-time high. We should all thank Bob Dylan for handing them that fateful joint and forever changing music as we know it. This album was made through a hazy cloud of Marijuana fumes ... ...- Revolver (obviously)

With the young beat combo The Beatles topping the album charts all over the world recently, I thought it would be nice to dip into their back catelogue, because some who have only just been exposed to "1" may not be aware of the delights to be found on the best body of work the band created.

There is no defining song or album that can catch the Beatles sound. However, "Revolver", released in the middle of their recorded life-span in 1966 may well be the Beatles at their very best.
"Revolver" has topped various polls for the best LP of all-time and quite rightly so in my opinion, but why? What is it that makes this ...

The black and white cover designed by Klaus Voormann, should give you a large clue as to the psychodelic slant the music on this album has. More cohesive than should be expected considering the drug intake, this album is Beatles to the core. Skilled musicianship. Magnificent melodies. Intriguing lyrically and with the new sound that sixties was evolving, this was a fantastic flagship for those times. And controversially for some people, I rate this ... ...Jam hadn't even dreamed of run through this track. Raw and heavy sounding, surprisingly this was penned by the quiet bloke, George Harrison.
Eleanor Rigby - Such a timeless classic that it's really somewhat redundant to sit here and give my op on it. However. Atmospheric in the extreme, sad, lonely, somewhat sinister, this is a wonderful tapestry of a song. I was 6 when this came out and it spun Auburey Beardsley like drawings in my head when I ...

What's better: Revolver or Sgt Pepper's?
It's a question that has been documented at tedious length. Rock critics have argued about it for decades, and Q has (predictably) talked utter mince about it. But no-one has come to a widely accepted conclusion.
But everyone admits that they're both rather good.
By 1966, The Beatles were no longer involved in crippling long tours. This meant that they were able to spend more time in the studio, where they ... ...Therefore, in many ways, Revolver marks the end of the Beatles' "pop" era, and heralds the start of a more complex, "rock" orientated sound. It's a massive leap from the previous year's "Rubber Soul", and it also paved the way nicely for "Sgt Pepper's".
The opening track, George's "Taxman", is everything an opener should be, and more: attention-grabbing, catchy, tuneful, while at the same time making an intelligent social comment: "Taxmen are bad".

...The first track on Revolver is "Taxman". It opens with a countdown (not used since their first album) and is a thinly disguised whinge from a wealthy young man stuck in the 96% tax bracket. It is written by Harrison and is one of the first songs to name check politicians (Wilson and Heath). The song also has a great bass line pinning it together with a cracking guitar riff. This is the first of three Harrison songs which appear on the album. The ... ...(The "White Album"). Revolver is probably not as well known as "Sergeant Pepper's..." because that was the album that introduced the world to the psychdelic experience. Revolver could be considered as laying the foundations for what was to come, but it is an important album in its own right. I suppose it could be considered as the world's first proper studio album, and it finds the band at their best: willing to experiment and always looking to create ...

...The biggest miracle of Revolver may be that the Beatles covered so much new stylistic ground and executed it perfectly on one record, or it may be that all of it holds together perfectly. Either way, its daring sonic adventures and consistently stunning songcraft set the standard for what pop-rock could achieve. Even after Sgt. Pepper, Revolver stands as the ultimate modern pop album and it's as emulated today as it was upon its original release. ...
