Advantages: skillful musicianship Disadvantages: not easy to find in stores
Rising Force was the first neo-classical metal epic I ever bought. I'd heard of Yngwie Malmsteen (sorry, Yngwie J. Malmsteen!) but up until then I'd held Eddie Van Halen in awe as the king of speed rock guitar. What Malmsteen introduced shook the guitar world and raised the standard of technical excellence forever. I bought the LP (thats about 12" of plastic with a hole in the middle for you youngsters out there) and I swear that when YJM ripped ... ...technician at work. Rising Force is definitely worth owning for the six instrumental classics alone--"Black Star", "Far Beyond The Sun" and "Evil Eye", to name but a few. On the 8 minute epic that is "Icarus Dream Suite" you can almost hear him disappear up his own backside and come out again!
If you don't play guitar: marvel at the sheer virtuosity of this man. If you play guitar: ditch the girlfriend, give up going out for 6 years and practice ...

Advantages: The rise of neo-classical metal, great guitar playing, fine vocal performances Disadvantages: Production values ain't great, inaccessible for some
*A review of Rising Force by Yngwie J. Malmsteen, which was intended as a quick review but I was forced to post as standard?* 'Rising Force', is seen as being responsible for the rise of Neo-Classical Metal; in Yngwie J. Malmsteen's debut solo album, he shows super speed and skill in his guitar playing, and with the distinctive Strat tone comes his wide violin-like vibrato. But it’s not entirely electric – the album is enriched by acoustic guitars ... ...1. Black Star – the opener is my favourite track off the album, I love the neighing guitar licks which kick in after the acoustic-into-electric buildup. 2. Far Beyond The Sun - the guitar and keyboard solo interchanges. 5. Icarus' Dream Suite Op. 4 - the medievil acoustic figure for the final section. 6. As Above, So Below - forgetting the final song, 'Farewell', this is the simplest song structure-wise, and most accessible. 7. Little Savage - the ...

Advantages: Great melody, guitar work, very inspirational - One of the best albums of all time Disadvantages: Not long enough!
This album is a true classic. Yngwie J Malmsteen fuses melodic classical phrases, using musical devices such as pedal tones and minor harmonic runs. The sheer speed and accuracy of the guitar work on this album is amazing; this album has never been matched and until I release my solo album it never will ;-). Seriously, whether you'd want to listen to the inspirational passages of music, or rock out to the shredding, this album is a MUST. Only 2 of ...

Advantages: classic yngwie, unbelievable guitar playing Disadvantages: none
This is perhaps Yngwie Malmsteen's most famous album of all time. The title track "Rising Force" shows a solo that is proved very difficult for the average guitar player. It is a song of amazing melodic playing and well thought out riffs and harmonies. "Black star" is probably Yngwie's most famous song involving very complicated guitar playing and is thought by alot of people all over the world as very inspiring. This inspired alot of players such ... ...So Below" is another great song and involves catchy lyrics and brilliant melodies, not to mention a duel of guitar and keyboard! "Evil Eye" is also such an amazingly complicated and qiuck paced song which invloves some classic Yngwie guitar playing! All together these songs plus the creativity and pure speed and skill of Yngwie's playing makes it the start of neo-classical guitar playing! ...

Advantages: Makes you feel like a viking god ! Disadvantages: You get arrested for breaking the speed limit ;-)
Yngwie J Malmsteen is a virtuoso guitarist. Those who appreciate classical music may love what he has to offer - try Paganini at 100,000 watts! Pure classical genius and a real athlete on the guitar!
Yngwie uses a style of playing originally meant for the violin that lends itself so well to the guitar. Paganini's violin playing was painstakingly worked out to push the violinist to the limits of physical endurance and concentration and gave forth ... ...in league with the devil!
If you imagine this classical skill in the possession of someone with the spirit of a viking coupled with today's modern technology and a crowd that is "moved" to a state of trancendental appreciation - you have an Yngwie J Malmsteen concert.
I like it - if you buy one album of his, make it this. ...
