Advantages: Several lively, upbeat numbers, that you will soon be singing along to! Disadvantages: The disappointment of the title track 'Sell, Sell, Sell'
Gray's 3rd album sees a culmination of styles he introudced in his first album 'A Century Ends' and his follow-up 'Flesh'. It is arguably a better and more rounded album, that shows off Gray's many musical styles and talents.
1 - 'Faster, Sooner, Now' The opening track is a lively and upbeat number. For Gray fans who are more used to his calmer and laid back works, the initial drum roll opening is quite a shock and instantly grabs your attention. ... ...better title track than the disappointing 'Sell,Sell,Sell' (but more on that later) This song is annoyingly short though at under 3 minutes, and you end up screaming for more! However this is just a taste of what is to come...
2- 'Late Night Radio'
Whilst not quite as upbeat as the opener, this number is certainly catchy. It proved a big hit in Ireland, unsurprinsgly on late night radio! The 3rd verse is quite scary. Avid Gray fans will tell you ...

Advantages: Moving, affecting music Disadvantages: One too many tedious ballads, Couple of songs outstay their welcome
...for those who don’t; ‘Sell Sell Sell’ failed to deliver on its title (except in Ireland) and EMI lost interest. Gray floated for the next few years, playing many gigs including an infamous support slot with Radiohead where he decided to destroy all his equipment on stage (how very rock n roll eh?). After all this he retired to his bedroom and recorded the album which was to become the epic seller, ‘White Ladder’. Released ... ...point in hand and ‘Sell Sell Sell’. As discussed above this was Gray’s third album and in my opinion marks the maturing of his sound. The earlier two albums have their moments but Gray’s songwriting came of age on this LP. It has a markedly more commercial sound then the preceding two releases and indeed in some ways ‘White Ladder’. The increase in production values is clearly noticeable, but this is a more traditional ...

Advantages: Tracks Disadvantages: some too long and repetitive.
‘Sell Sell Sell’ is one of David Gray’s earlier albums before his success with White ladder and Lost Songs. Published in 1996, this album is once again crammed full of good tracks.
The opening track “Faster, Sooner, Now” is rather a short song consisting of about 2 and a half minutes. The intro is rather fetching as it involves a drum sequence then leading into “Hey Now” sung or shouted out by David. This ... ...namesake of this album “Sell Sell Sell” begins in a freaky sort of way with the sound of a clanging metal being played through-out the start whilst David sings, then suddenly, the song progresses into a more rocky type mellow track with electric guitars during the chorus whilst the verses remain more freaky with the metal clangs. After a while though, this track (lasting over 5 minutes!) can get a but annoying with the metal clanging ...

Advantages: Brilliant Lyrics Disadvantages: Don`t buy this one if this is your first DG album
...for it.
Sell, sell, sell is much more "rockin" than the previous two featuring as much electric guitar as acoustic. I know that David really does not like this album much as he had a nightmare recording it, but the strength of his song writing ability shines through. Highlights include Late Night Radio (an anthem if ever I heard one), What am I Doing Wrong ? which reminds me of Buffalo Tom as it has a really nice driving feel and Gutters Full of ... ...his parents (with such poignant lyrics as "were these twenty years a dream, was it ever as it seemed, get to wonder if it ever existed"). The main strength is David's lyrical ability. Being a songwriter myself, I know how hard it can be to write good lyrics, David's are excellent and that is what keeps you coming back for more. Every time I listen to a DG album I discover more meanings and complex situations that he describes effortlessly. There ...
