Advantages: Launchpad for the greatest band in the history of music Disadvantages: A bit immature in places
...the 4th of October 1999, Showbiz by Muse, the debut album from one of the biggest bands on the British rock scene today, is quite simply something which every household should own. In the same sense that everyone should have a toilet and an oven, everyone should have this CD. It is a raw, fresh sound which reeks of the attitude Muse had in their younger days, petulant in some places and powerful in others, and is one of the bravest debut albums ever ... ...could produce a song like Showbiz on their debut album, knowing that this would be what people had to take their first impressions from. It is a soaring piece, with very few different lines, and just listening to Matt as he repeats lines you can imagine him staring you in the face and singing through gritted teeth as if he really is angry and hurt. This song has a darker sound to it than any other, and the way it builds from start to end is a credit ...

....Looking through my past opinions earlier today I realised something that shocked me ever so slightly…..I hadn’t written an op. on Muse – probably my favourite band in the whole wide world at the moment! So I decided I would write this op. on their debut album ‘Showbiz’.
Now I hope beyond hope that most of you reading this will actually ... ...band (I won’t be able to stress this enough!). Unfortunately though I doubt whether too many of you are familiar with them or their music although they have been bordering on major commercial, mainstream success for the past couple of years so hopefully you have done so. Many of you may know their most famous song, ‘Plug in Baby’ (taken from the second album “Origin of Symmetry” and nothing else I suspect.
But anyway……

Oh dear. Didn't realise there were so many reviews already. Never mind, i've reviewed the flawless 'Origin of Symmetry', so i'll review this too.
Muse first came to my attention on the release of 'Muscle Museum', as MTV2 was my only real means of hearing this kind of new music. The song struck me dumb with it's innovation and well-channelled angst. The song stayed with me, but i put off buying the album until i had heard another single. Unfortunately, ... ...Baby', which, of course, appeared on 'Origin of Symmetry'. So i bought that masterpiece, but put off 'Showbiz', until i had truly got into Muse in a big way.
I shouldn't have waited so long. Many college students especially were crazy about Muse on the release of 'Showbiz', and rightly so. Matt Bellamy was just 20 when he wrote it, and although not flawless, there is plenty to suggest Muse had what it took to produce a truly timeless album, which ...

Advantages: Good debut album Disadvantages: The Radiohead comparrison that followed on after it's release
...This is the debut album Showbiz released in 1999 onto an unsuspecting market and almost straight away the tag “The New Radiohead” was attached to the band. However Bellamy, Howard and Wolstenholme weren’t going to let that put them off.
In fact they were going to become a band on a par with Radiohead, but at the same time sounding nothing like them. The music press always branding the next.... title around kept on with these comparisons, however ... ...that is the debut album Showbiz from Muse available from www.CD-wow.com for £8.99. Well worth the money if you ask me, although I am still to actually buy a proper copy, hence the fact it’s taken me four days to write this as my track listing is wrong on my CD. But you’ll be pleased to know I got it all sorted and it runs as above. ...

...the instruments blending together.
Showbiz is the title track of the album. It is almost tribal, as it starts off with just a repeating bass line reminiscent of beating drums. You can't help but move your body in time with this track, and feel the emotions in you growing as the track builds up and up.
Unintended is another of the very slow songs on the CD, and fits in nicely here. You may have heard this if you watch Trigger Happy TV, as it is ... ...second longest on the CD, Showbiz being the longest. Starting slowly, and building up, this song moves through a variety of different styles, and highlights the band's ability to deal with any influence.
It has been said that Muse are probably influenced by Radiohead, because of the high pitched vocals. The songs are also born out of pent up emotion as with Radiohead, and appear to be very dark in nature; so it is easy to see where critics are coming ...

...Nice bass work too.
Showbiz - Another of the album's best. The song's mood is very frantic and fast paced. The song has some really good melodies, especially in the verse, making the song one of the most depressing of the album. The guitar solo in this song is awesome, and just further proves the genius of Matt Bellamy. The vocals (especially towards the end) are some of Matt's best (and highest) yet.
Unintended - A softer and slower track, mainly ... ...just acoustic, drums and Matt's voice. The acoustic part is nice with some good hammer-ons happening. The mood of the song is quite sad and depressing with the acoustic guitar part adding to the mood of the song. A bit further into the song, some strings and bass come in and Matt's voice goes really, really high. The song is really nice. There is also an organ sounding instrument somewhere into the song.
Uno - The intro of this song is just so cool. ...

Advantages: None whatsoever Disadvantages: Too many to list, but here's a few: angsty crap, bunch of eejits, incredibly unoriginal.
Matt Belamy has always been a bit of a weirdo. From an early age he communed with the dead, picking voices out of the air with a ouija board. This connection with the dead obviously set him apart from his peers. But not from drummer Dom, who, according to a vicious rumour, “saw a ghost when he was eight and pooed his pants” (ta Select magazine).
When not soiling their underwear, Muse play rock music. And extremely angsty rock music at ... ...worries and despairs”. While a world-weary approach works very well for Mr Thomas Yorke Esq. et all at Radiohead, who use it to make beautiful, original music, it makes Muse look like a bunch of twats. When they play live, Matt is bent double over his guitar, as if suffering from massive internal contractions, caused by being possessed by some unseen devil. All the while he emits a distressing wail which he claims is “singing”. ...

Showbiz was the debut album release by British band Muse. Muse are Matthew Bellamy (Vocals/Guitar), Chris Wolstenhome (Bass), and Dominc Howard (drums), and immediately upon the release of this album Muse we billed as the next Radiohead (or more precisely Radiohead copiers). I’m not sure if that was fair, but on listening to this album the Radiohead elements are obvious in some areas, but weak in others, either ... ...lyrics.
>Overall
Yes Muse’s Showbiz album is like Radiohead, but so what? When an artist can do it this good and create in my opinion such a fresh sound, it does not matter that much, and in my opinion, the latest album is less Radioheady. Anyway, as Muse say, Radiohead is about being sad and singing about it, and Muse are happy to be sad.
Muscle Museum and Sunburn are two awesome tracks, and added to the ballads such as Unintended and (the ...

Advantages: Most of the tracks are brilliant, e.g. MM, Cave, Sunburn, Unintended; the solid band effort Disadvantages: Some tracks are too average, Matt's voice can grate sometimes
Showbiz was the debut album by the band Muse. This album is very different from the rest of the Muse albums, for example the experimentational nature of "Origin of Symmetry" to the apocalyptic & spacey themes of "Absolution" & "Black Holes & Revelations". It also has a very raw, rocky feel to it, some people comparing them to Radiohead. But as my friend put it when I made him to listen to some Radiohead after listening to Showbiz, he just couldn't ... ...what may be happening.
- Showbiz is the titular track, a drum-beat driven song concerning how it can tear your life apart- "forcing us into self-destruction", showing how many "rock" stars can just waste their lives away through many vices once they "make" it.
- Unintended is a fantastic track; a proper love song with acoustic guitar and wonderful ambience. I can't really say that much about it...buy the album please, you need to hear some of these ...

Advantages: Muse are one of the most original bands to emerge from the nineties, with unbelievable depth to their music. Matthew Bellamy's vocals alone make this album worth hearing. Disadvantages: An acquired taste, which some may say imitates Radiohead.
It is a rare occurence that I genuinely enjoy a song the first time i hear it. However, Muses's unintended (track 07) proved to be an exception. It was the first song of their's I had heard and is a prime example of the band's talent. Having listened to and enjoyed a couple more tracks from the album, I decided to buy myself a copy. However, thanks to these similarities, Muse have managed to attract many Radiohead fans as Radiohead's style progresses elsewhere. And, despite these similarities, Muse in no way sound as if they are trying to be a band they are not. On this album alone their style varies immensely from tuneful tracks such as sunburn (01) ...

...I cannot agree more. Showbiz is an alternative rock feast, packed full of angst and an awe-inspiring sound, Showbiz isn’t just guitar and drums…
1. Sunburn
My favourite track of the CD, this is an “angst ridden anthem” top class lyrics, this is a song you must listen to, here are the lyrics to this song: “Come waste your millions here Secretly she sneers Another corporate show A guilty conscience grows and I'll feel a guilty conscience grow
She ... ...she'll burn our horizons make no mistakes Come let the truth be shared no-one ever dared to break these endless lies secretly she cries and I'll hide from the world behind a broken frame and I'll run forever I can't face the shame” I cannot do it any justice here, this is awesome, full of passion too. 10/10
2. Muscle Museum
Arguably as good as Sunburn, this some has one of the most stunning outros, has as much angst as Sunburn, truely awesome.

...for musical greatness. Showbiz is a wonderful collage of raw emotion, subtlety and complexity. The vocal stylings of Bellamy are probably the most striking thing about the group on first listening, however there is a real solidity to all aspects of the bands musicianship, arrangement and style, that suggest maturity even though they are a relatively young act. Classic single material like Sunburn and Muscle Museum provides a wonderful contrast with ...

...listening to their debut album Showbiz and love it too. It\'s got a lot of different tracks from slow to heavy. The best ones I think are Unintended and Sunburn. Sunburn is quite heavy and Unintended is quiet and soft but they\'re both good.
The Tracks go like this:
1 : Sunburn
This song has a great paino beat in the background. It starts off really quiet but gets quite loud. Which a great voice just loud another to hear. With some great lyrics ... ...really effective. The voice is good and will grow on you the more muse songs you listen to.
2 : Muscle Museum
This song is one of Muse\'s most famous but I hardly know anyone that know it by the name. This song has great lyrics and the tune is really cool. It starts off really good and the voice turns into a great guitar solo after the 2nd chorus. This song is really addictive and loved by nearly everyone. If you don\'t like this one you\'ll never ...
