Deathly, frightening and fascinatingly gloomy, The Sisters Of Mercy are not a gathering of religiously evil bible bashing nuns, but a wonderfully gothic band whose humble beginings are not unlike those of the smart suited, well organised Beatles.
The fact that two ordinary musicians with even more ordinary names, Gary Marx and Andrew Eldritch got together somewhere in very more ordinary Leeds sometime in 1980 would not leave us in any surprise. ... ...scraped together what money they had for one instrument, a guitar and somehow manage to devise an independant record label then perhaps we would be more inclinde to sit up alittle and listen more intently. Advantages: Some of the greatest ever songs of the 80's Disadvantages: None. Except maybe not enough of their other classic songs.
Not many bands can claim that they gave birth to an entire cultural phenomenon. The Sisters of Mercy were undoubtedly one of the most influential bands in Pop-Rock music. They started a fashion and music movement that is still alive today.
TSoM (The Sisters of Mercy), along with The Cure, are more responsible for the word "Goth" (in it's musical sense) being understood today than anyone else. From bands like Nine Inch Nails to Christian Metal bands ... ...be seen. At the start of the 80's, various bands pushed towards more abstract or non-formulaic music, contributing to the overall Goth idea, such as The Cult, the Damned, and The Cure. But it was TSoM who made their sound synonymous with Goth. They defined it. Later bands such as The Fields of Nephilim and The Mission borrowed from TSoM, as did all the 80's bands borrow and influence each other whether consciously or unconsciously. Except, TSoM, ...

Their first single was pressed and released by themselves, received one radio play and was described as being both "unobtainable and unlistenable”. Recruiting Craig Adams on bass and Doktor Avalanche(the drum machine) to fo the rest leaves Eldritch as the vocalist by default of being able to do nothing else.
