Advantages: Tuneful,classic pop-rock,best of the 90s.Lyrically,musically and vocally chairming and catchy Disadvantages: If you dont like pop/rock then you might not enjoy this blast from the past.
...mention to Texas? Southside by Texas is one of their most acclaimed albums. Released in 1995 with timeless classics like 'I dont want a lover', the album still rings true with audiences today. Although they have taken their name from an american state, they are essentially a Scottish pop/rock band. Their music does seem to adopt some of the texan stealy guitar sound and although singer and rhythm guiatris Sharleen Spiter has a lovely Scottish accent, ... ...but common of the era). This album has some really great pop songs, I dont Want a Lover being one of many. The overal quality of the vocals is really smooth and undisputable Sharleen has a brilliant and melodic voice. The lyrics are typical of the genre lending themselves really well to romantic melancholy that we seem to love in our pop-rock ballads. Before Chris Evans fell big style for Sharleen and relegated the other members to mere backing musicians Texas were a proper band who merged MOR with western soundtracks and Sharleens distinctive voice to produce instantly recognisible sounds.
Southside, their first album, highlights this mixture with the epic jangly opening to "I don't want a lover" before the song proper starts and continues with slide guitar in a prominent position in the mix. ...
