...than I got!
Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants - Oasis 4th studio album released back in 2000 was perhaps the album that should never have been released. With half the band departing, Noel and Liam squabbling and supposedly it was to be the album that was to show the fan base who were mightily disappointed following Be Here Now (- the album even Noel Gallagher described as being written by two gob shites on Charlie) that Oasis were back on track, ... ...isn't in it? Well unfortunately Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants is one of those albums. Don't get me wrong in places you see the sparks of greatness but only in places. It is very much an album of two halves, unfortunately the bad half over shadows the good. It has potential, but unfortunately that got lost some where from going into the studio and the finished item. Some of the tracks could at best be described as mediocre others the only word ...

Advantages: A couple of crackers Disadvantages: A couple of duffers
Having written (a while back) about Oasis' first two albums here in Ciaoland, I thought I'd go back and revisit the wonderful world of the Gallaghers. My copy of their latest effort, "Heathen Chemistry" dropped through my letterbox this morning (thanks go to CD-Wow and Graham "Sheriff" Cox, Postman DD135), and while it's a bit soon to write about that album, it might just be a good time to go back and have a look at its immediate predecessor.
"Standing ... ...fourth studio album (not including the B-side album "The Masterplan"), and was released two and a half years ago. Following on from the luke-warm reception of the previous album "Be Here Now", SOTSOG was a crucial release for the band, as if it was mince it would signal a continuing downward spiral for the group, while if it was magic it would again see Oasis propelled back to the top of the profession. What we actually got was a bit of both - Oasis' ...

Advantages: Finaly we know for sure Liam has no talent. Disadvantages: Very short.
Prior to the albums release, Oasis fans had to endure the news of band members Bonehead and Guigsy departure. So with Liam and Noel being the only original band members left, confirmed many views that the Gallagher brothers were the band. Anybody else was irrelevant.
The album itself looks as if was made deliberately for the American market. The sleeve picture of skyscrapers can only win them favour, and lyrics contained inside mean there is no ... ...be forgiven for asking: Where is the band? Where are all the Union Jacks? Where are the Beatles? This confirms that the album is set for the US charts, and any band members missing would go unnoticed.

Advantages: Far,.far Superior to Be Here Now. Disadvantages: People have turned against Oasis in a big way - unfairly so.
F***** IN THE BUSHES
Excellent 'Spencer Davies Groupesque' jam, very much like middle Led Zep. Punctuated by thudding drums and heavy guitar, the song is an instrumental, save for the occasional sample during which the title is taken. Many muchness on the choir vocal from P.P. Arnold. In general, a great track. 8/10
GO LET IT OUT
Wall of sound, with a slow hypnotic beat. Tends to drag on, but get's better after repeated plays. The first stolen ... ...and kings). First single from the album, and in my opinion, fairly weak 6/10
WHO FEEL'S LOVE? Reportedly the next single, and very good it is too. The double vocals between Liam and Noel work very well, in a Daltrey/Townshend type way. Excellently timed track, and suprisingly original. 8-9/10
PUT YER MONEY WHERE YER MOUTH IS
Starts very much like the song 'Morning Glory' Poor lyrics, and is a tad boring until the last 30 seconds where Noel's 'aahs' ...

Advantages: Some cracking underrated songs... Disadvantages: Some boring tracks
...Some of Oasis' influences in Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants was easy to see especially in 'Who Feels Love?' where the influence of George Harrison enters, and as Liam was a big Beatle fan that is no surprise. This album contains one of Oasis' best ever songs in which is very underrated, 'Gas Panic' is excellently lyrical as Liam said in a previous live gig 'You've got to listen to the song' talking about 'Gas Panic he is certainly right! The ... ...Track By Track Review:
1. Fuckin' In The Bushes - A great opener to an album, very rocky, great guitar riffs in this song and drums too. This song is Oasis favourite Intro song to their gigs and i'm not surprised at all. 9/10
2. Go Let It Out! - A nice song, typical Liam gallagher voice very smooth as he throws his voice, lyrically it is also a good song including lyrics such as 'Life is precautious in the most faimilar ways'. 9/10
3. Who Feels ...

It always has to be a worrying sign when Noel is slating the album before it hits the shelves. It started off being described as the best album ever, and slowly we discovered track by track what Noel did and didn't like. Where had the shameless arrogance gone? Self doubt from the indie/rock giants?
Expectation was high, so much publicity, band members leaving left, right and centre, rucks between Noel and Liam, and of course the disappointment of ... ...to deliver us a great or grim album?
Recorded by a bare bones Oasis, with Bonehead and Guigsy gone, their parts being relaid largely by Noel, produced encouragingly by Spike Stent with Noel, the album gets off to a smile enducing start with "Fucking in the Bushes". Crashing drums, loops, samples, grinding guitar, this is such an encouraging start, Oasis finally moving with the times, acknowledging that they can't endlessly repeat the 90's rock trick. ...

...to take pleasure in hating. Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants was that album. It was released in 2000 on their newly launched record label and expectation was at its highest. After 3 decent albums the world expected Oasis to return with something magnificent, to top all 3. For me there was something lacking from the album as a whole, I couldn't quite put my finger on it and as a result banished it to my CD collection to start collecting dust. Then about 6 months or so ago I decided to listen to it again, I'm not sure what prompted it but I dusted it off and listened to it. After a few repeats of the album I really started to take to it. Advantages: A variety of tracks all with a distinct Oasis sound to them Disadvantages: Poor quality compared to previous releases
After the departure of two of the bands most influential ‘Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants’, the bands fifth album, was released with great hype and expectation to see if the new members could retain the old sound of the band with a new look Liam and an apparently apprehensive Noel around the release of this album no-one knew what to expect from it. ‘Be Here Now’ had in the eyes of many failed to reach the levels of ‘(What’s ... ...a song which was as successful and well known as ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’. However, this didn’t stop the music actually being as good. ‘The Masterplan’ drew together some of the bands greatest B-sides and kept interest in the band flowing awaiting the release of the nest album. The album itself has did in some respects turn out to be a disappointment but in other areas the album was surprisingly good. The sleeve ...

...exposed weaknesses and quite frankly Standing on the shoulders of Giants is downright terrible. With the odd single being good, Oasis are relying on reputation and not substance to sell albums these days, and that reputation itself is slowly declining. Little James sums up the whole album, un-original and pathetically mundane.

...which they have recently produced, Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants I find quite appealing to oneself. This album has a more laid back style to the theme (which is relaxing and chilled out) than present albums. Advantages: At points it's Sweet and rocky . Disadvantages: Little James
Oasis' place in history is already assured . So why not try something new . Well they have and they haven't . Musically this is a step forward with Noel recording most of the bass , lead and rhythem parts and producing . However some of the lyrics are still stuck in Be here now phase .The lead single GO Let it Out is the best example , it shows the new more technically skilled music , but some dire lyrics . Noel even had to completley rip off a poem ... ...the album does throw up some intresting things . A song like Gas Panic is hardly discernable from the Oasis of old (Except for Liams snarl , that stays the same as always .) This album also contains Liams first Oasis song writing credit . Pity . Little James is SOTSOG at it's worst , Terrible Lyrics and Clear Beatles style music . O.K the Beatles were great but Noel should just leave them at home and not torment us with his recreations . The albums ...

This has got to be the worst Oasis album. I would not recommend it to anyone at all and is a complete waste of money. Even true Oasis fans will have trouble finding anything good on this entire album. The songs are terrible and I don't know where half of the lyrics came from. I cannot think of one good thing to say about this entire album except from that it should never have been made and it certainly should never be inflicted on people. Whatever ...

Advantages: 4 great tracks, excellent intro Disadvantages: a few duffers
I do feel sorry for Oasis, and particularly Noel Gallagher. On the one hand, people have a go at home for producing songs that 'all sound the same' and 'lack innovation', and then on the opposing side, people have a go for the songs not 'being like the old ones'. Some people just can't win, well at least in the eyes of some misguided fools. If you hadn`t ever heard of oasis before and put this CD on, you would think 'WOW!'; the opening instrumental ... ...let it out'. In my opinion, good albums have 4 or 5 'killer' tracks, on this album, these are the instrumental, 'Go let it out', 'Roll it over', 'Sunday Morning Call', and 'Gas Panic'.
There`s always a bit of stuff on there which doesn`t quite reach the heights of the rest. On this album, the songs which achieve this are 'Little James', 'Put yer money where your mouth is', 'who feels love', but they`re still not stinkers. We`re just used to Noel ...

Standing on the shoulder of giants a great misquote from noel in a drunken state wrote it on the back off a fag packet with the words a bum title on missing out the l of album was kind of symbolic. A bad title doesn’t make a bad album and thankfully all is not lost. The great new sound off F***ing in the bushes is a strange start to what seems to be an album about noel by noel. ...if you excluded the Masterplan, Standing on the Shoulder of Giants had a huge weighting on its shoulders, excuse the pun. With the troubles of drugs and instant fame recalled the album is a stepping stone between the old and the new direction of Oasis. There is obvious faults with this experiment of possibly letting Liam try his hand at song writing through Little James, the sound is nice but the lyrics are weak. The album has a slant towards the American market but is still typical Oasis, don’t write them off they are still great. ...
