Advantages: great tracks.brilliant lyrics. political engagement. Disadvantages: The cover: What the heck?? How lame can you get?
...the longer songs on the Toxicity album, almost being about 5 minutes long. Science has to be one of my favorites on the album, along with forest, and chop suey. I get ravaged in the middle of this particular song. There are extremely different guitar chords in this song that I love. It also sounds like there is a flute in the background, which adds to the overall emotion of this song. Science basically lives up to what the lyrics choose to express.
... ...rifts are found in the toxicity song. It is a defiant keeper and will not get you bored on future listening sessions. I downloaded the music video on Kazaa now that Morpheus has died on us.
More wood for their fires, loud neighbors,
Flashlight reveries caught in the headlights of a truck,
Eating seeds as a past time activity,
The toxicity of our city, of our city,
Just more explanation of the pollution in Cali. It is pretty cool to know that ...

Advantages: Consistent quality Disadvantages: Nothing specific
"Toxicity" came out in 2001, and was the second album from the Nu-Metal band, System of A Down. The group had released one album prior to this, and after the hype of their self-entitled debut was brought up, they managed to come out with a hit #1 album with this one as they brought there alternative sound to the Metal genre. 1. "Prison Song"
To start it all off, they do it in a big way as they do an excited one to wae you up. Their well-known stop-start ... ...gives it makes it all seem quite unpredictable as they burst with energy, and then sudenly stop it all, and then out of nowhere bring it all back. Once it settles into the hardcore Metal, who can't help but get taken over by it all. **Four Stars**
2. "Needles"
The composition of this one is absolutely perfect in in creating the ideal setting to do one which reveloves around the theme of drug abuse. You have it going from poar opposites in mood ...

Advantages: Superbly talented band with an even more superbly talented lead singer make this a very fine album. Disadvantages: For me it's just a little too heavy at times but for many this may not be the case.
...titled first album and believe Toxicity to be a progression still from what they achieved with their debut. So here’s what it is:
1 - Prison Song “Utilising drugs to pay for secret wars around the world, Drugs are now your global policy now you police the globe’
Oh what a way to begin an album. This was, to my knowledge at least, the first SoaD song that I heard and must admit that in the beginning I was not overly impressed. It’s pretty heavy, ... ...ATWA to the title track Toxicity then put it on repeat…..for about an hour! One of the released singles from the album this is fairly fantastic. Quite typically SoaD really but it seems to just have something that sets it apart from many of its counterparts.
13 – Psycho
“Psycho, groupie, cocaine crazy, Psycho, groupie, coke…Makes you high, makes you high, makes you really want to go jump.”
As the lyrics above show this is clearly another one of ...

Advantages: Great songs and a really original rock sound. Disadvantages: first five songs, whilst all good, don't really give an idea of the band's diversity.
System Of A Down have been around for a few years now, first appearing on the international scene with their self-titled 1998 debut. That album was an explosion of different styles with an almost punk anger, like Mr Bungle jamming with the Dead Kennedys. On this, their second album, they have continued very much in this mould, mixing Jazz, Rock, Punk and Middle-Eastern Folk music into an innovative and unique style. The album is a little short, at ... ...and intensity within is blinding. The track listing is as follows:
1. Prison Song
2. Needles
3. Deer Dance
4. Jet Pilot
5. X 6. Chop Suey!
7. Bounce 8. Forest
9. ATWA
10. Science
11. Shimmy
12. Toxicity
13. Psycho 14. Aerials
“Prison Song” opens up with a stop-start guitar riff and whispered vocals, before kicking into the main riff. From there we shift into the verse, where Vocalist Serj rants about America’s draconian ...

Advantages: That, as good as their debut album was, this is far better. Disadvantages: Not many, just the fact that everyone lumps them together with the rest of the average nu metal bands.
OOO OOO OOO The start of this CD is ME!! I swear .. Heavy, Meshuggah style, stop starty sharp chuggs for the intro to "Prison Song" .Weird rhythms kick in with awesome sounding chugg-tastic loveliness then out of this comes that very strange System of a Down unique genius . This band do NOT fit into the nu-metal bracket they are so often shoved into , they are System Of A Down . Intelligent lyrics , rhythms , ideas beyond belief , in fact I think ... ...ideas as they positively swarm in ideas and new slants on how to do things.
Serj Tankien has the most unique and interesting voice this side of Mike Patton (Faith no more) and Devin Townsend (Strapping Young Lad) with so many different ranges and expressions of mood . All the songs move from dramatic mini operettas to full on raging metal as fuck anthems to funny but thought provoking intellectualisms harking back to the day of the Dead Kennedys ...

Well the first song on the album, which some might see as the most important. It is a sign of things ... ...this then this album would seem to be in good shape, as this is a brilliant song! The song is their personal dig at the American Justice System and Foreign Policy. An example of the lyrics:
“…minor drugs offenders fill you prisons, you don’t even flinch, all our taxes paying for your wars, against the new non-rich…”
* Deer Dance *
This song is another politically motivated song and you can see where the inspiration for it came from. The song is ...

Advantages: Beatiful melodic sounds, all songs sound different. Disadvantages: Some songs feature repetitive lyrics
...The cover of Toxicity may seem a bit stupid and lame to people. I sort of agree, but it doesn’t show the bands musical talents. Quite a few songs on the album feature political lyrics such as the prison system in the U.S and some people may not like the way they are talking. But the band members say that they just talk about life in general as they also do just that as shown in the song ‘A.T.W.A’ (Air, Trees, Water, Animals).
This album definitely ... ...on the album ‘Arto’ and the middle part of ‘Science’.
I have seen many videos of System of a Down playing live and they really do turn on the crowd. In my opinion they are much different to other bands playing live, they create a different feel of atmosphere.

Advantages: Brilliant music, new style Disadvantages: Too heavy and political for some
System Of A Down are a real mix of cultures. Living in America, but born and bred in Armenia, the four band members Serj Tankian, Daron Malakian, Shavo Odadijan and John Dolymayan merge together to give one of the most unique sounds I have heard in the last few years, as this is not metal as you know it, this is thrash metal with a folk influence, albeit very much toned down since their earlier releases, but it is still there for all to hear. You ... ...will think differently I assure you. I warn you in advance though, this is not music to chill out to. This music grabs hold of you, shakes you around for a while and then goes leaving you confused and worn out just because of the sheer energy that is put into each song. This is not music for the faint hearted! I have already reviewed their self titled 1998 release, but with this album, released in 2001, you get a more political offering (especially ...

...some more Jewish singing and Toxicity the album titled song you think at the start is quite disappointing but oh no still a pristine album and This song is ace with some real inspired singing from Serj and then into his political screaming. Enough said.
(No.13) Psycho is ...er... about someone who is cocaine crazy (aren’t we all?) Aerials (No.14) just belongs up there in the sky as SOAD come up with another brilliant original song. Yes there we ... ...is one more a hidden track that isn’t very hidden called Arto is just plain weird. With some Bongo drumming and some wailing as if a crowd of African tribesmen. An original and excellent ending to the most original and excellent album your ever likely to hear. You haven’t lived if you haven’t listened to this band. ...end of the song. The Toxicity of our city certainly intoxicates you wonderfully on this one. Great stuff.
9/10
13) Psycho: No, not a song about the Alfred Hitchcock 1960's slasher flick, but rather a song about crazy, cocaine-junkie groupies. The lyrics are catchy and the song is quite fast-paced throughout, until it slows down to reflect the lyrics "Do you really want to think and stop?" One thing I do wonder about at the beginning of the song, ... ...quite high-pitched? Could that be a take on the Psycho shower scene music from the film before it crashes into the main part of the song? Could be. But another good song, and you'll certainly find yourself singing along to this one.
8/10
14) Aerials: And no, this isn't singing about the delights of the the UK detergent. Actually, it's probably the deepest song on the album, with Tankian melodically and powerfully projecting some great lyrics. And ...

Advantages: Unique, refreshing, beautiful album Disadvantages: none
Trying to put system of a down's (soad) music into words is most certainly a very undesirable task. Ok, so they are different, but not that different to everyone else. So what exactly does make this such a hard task...?
The fact that they are so far ahead of everyone else.
3 years ago, the politically-themed Armenians released their self-titled debut, which although not so much so at the time, is recognised as a gound breaking album. It certainly ... ...out again, it still manages to absolutely blow me away without fail) different, which is something that most definately doesn't happen too often in metal music, which (even as a fan) is mostly filled with tried and tested formulas, and quite often identikit bands.
What made that debut album 'groundbreaking' and 'special' (it has now sold over 1,000,000 copies in America, I have been informed) is hard to put a finger on, however, what I can say is ...

Advantages: Loads of energy, unpredictable, loud, best album of 2001, how much more do you want? Disadvantages: Err... hmmm... no, can't think of any.
Well, that was my first impression when I heard 'Chop Suey' for the first time on MTV2. The combination of the lyrics of the song ("Father into your hands I commend my spirit") and the physical appearance of Serj Tankian made me want to rush out into the street shouting, "Jesus has risen! Jesus has risen!" at the top of my voice. Well, all right, maybe not. But for want of a more suitable word, System of a Down are at times very religious, almost ... ...are the opposite.
But the schizophrenic nature of the music is one of the best things about 'Toxicity'. System of a Down (who will from now on be referred to as SOAD to save space) have the ability to create songs which are moving ballads one second, and tuneless punk thrashes the next second. Add to this the band's trademark Eastern European sound (they originate from Armenia, don't you know) and you have something that should resemble a sonic ...

...a nun, lovers". Mmmmmm.
Toxicity is System of a Down's second album, produced by hair magnet supreme Rick Rubin (He of Blood Sugar Sex Magik fame) and I have to admit that I wasn't overly looking forward to this album. While I found the first album quite entertaining (Yelling the bit about lifestyles is fun) it was all quite samey and got boring rather fast. However I heard the track 'Chop Suey' on the Radio 1 rock show and, well, loved it like ... ...a sudden I couldn't wait to hear the album. Then my buddy coxy123 dropped it on my desk and after the first few seconds of the first track I knew…
* Prison Song *
That System of a Down hadn't so much changed their spots on Chop Suey as temporarily worn a tasteful, yet borrowed, jacket. A few guitar/drum thuds gradually increase in speed with the odd "They're trying to build a prison" whispered. Then the song gets going in a sort of chugging metal ...

Advantages: Serj and Daron are amazing singers, the band play tighter than the best, completely unique Disadvantages: Issues not always clear, but this doesn't affect the quality of the music
This is the second offering from L.A.-based metal outfit System of a Down. Their self titled debut, recognised in music stores as ‘that one with the big yellow hand sticking out of it’, brought a hefty cult following, as did their live shows when they supported Slayer on tour in 1998. As well as sharing buses, the band also had their album produced by Slayer producer Rick Rubin. The album was one of the most hectic, unpredictable and ... ...of critics and fans alike. Slowly, the band are becoming more and more popular, and are already using their fame to promote awareness of important political issues, such as the American Government’s denial of the Armenian genocide and the futility of current drug policies in the US. Advantages: You'll never get bored of listening to these songs. Disadvantages: Arto track doesn't really fit in.
...partying I think.
12. Toxicity One of the more gentle tracks on the album this song is sad, it sings of the destruction of nature and the toxicity of cities. It's depressingly true and is one of my favourite tracks on the album.
13. Psycho
This song to do with coke abuse is very powerful but is not as serious as the other songs. It makes the manic life of a crack addict's life seem bad but fun at the same time.
14. Areials
This song about freeing ... ...small mindness of civilians (I would say satellites are worse though!). It is a powerful song that almost makes you want to climb on your roof and yank off your very own aerial.
Secret Track: Arto
This automatically plays after Aerials. This track is not rock but a gentle blend of rainforest music! Crazy if you ask me as it does not really fit with the vibe of the rest of the album.
This album is really very good and even if you’re not a rock ...
