Midlake are an indie folk rock band hailing from Texas, and "Trials of Van Occupanther" is their long-awaited second album, released 18 months after their debut "Bamnan and Slivercork". However the wait really was worth it!
The album combine a wide range of different influences (from Fleetwood Mac and The Eagles to The Flaming Lips and Radiohead) and combine them into a unique, melodic, even hallucinogenic sound.
Midlake bravely experiment with ... ...in its own right. The lyrics are thought provoking and otherwordly, telling tales of travel and isolation.
The standout tracks are "Young Bride", "Head Home" and the fabulous opening track "Roscoe". But this is an album which should be listened to in its entirety.
So lay back, put your feet up and enjoy! ...

Advantages: Relaxing, Uplifting, Real Talent on Display Disadvantages: None (for me)
I bought a whole bunch of new music recently (new to me) and this was by far the album that stood out head and shoulders above the rest.
The whole album is a pleasant listening experience, there wasn't one single track that I disliked or would skip over.
Midlake reminded me very strongly of Turin Brakes and to a slightly lesser degree, Neutral Milk Hotel. Basically if you are a fan of Turin Brakes then you could go buy this album right now and ... ...I had never heard of Midlake before now, in my opinion they are not getting the recognition their superb talents deserve.
It's hard to pin down what period of time the music seems to be from. It easily sits alongside today's music, but I find myself thinking of the past as I listen to them - not my own past, more just a general reflection as the music seems to take you back in time to a different, almost more innocent age.
