Advantages Advantages Some great tunes, Petes Vocals

Disadvantages Disadvantages Petes drug habit and the bad press it gives the band.

The Libertines - Up the bracket. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Pete Doherty it seems like you cannot open a newspaper with out some headline or other screaming about his on/off relationship with Kate Moss or his appalling drug habit. What you don't seem to read about is his music, the thing that gave him his fame in the first place, so im here to tell you about it. The Libertines formed in about 1998 when Carl barat and Pete Doherty were introduced to each other by Pete's sister, it wasn't long before they were playing guitars, writing songs and planning their careers in the ... more

Advantages Advantages Good debut, some quality tracks

Disadvantages Disadvantages a little hit and miss, there will be no more Pete Doherty on lead vocals

The Libertines appeared from nowhere during 2002 and caputered the imagination of a lot of people with a retro style of rock music that sounded like it came from days gone by. Well even though after just one album it appears the band have already gone to pot with lead singer Pete Doherty appearing in court having broken into band mate Karl Barat’s flat, to steal some cash to support an alleged drug habit. Well needless to say Pete is no longer in the band but this one album showed happier times for the band. But having released this debut album back when they were all still mates, the sound of ... more

Advantages Advantages A truly stunning album, with a definite swagger and personality. Melodic, very energetic.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Preconceptions will mean that some people miss out. Ignore them.

It's a terrible shame that so many people see the headlines about Pete Doherty's infamous antics, and immediately associate everything he has ever touched as awful, drug addled nonsense. That phrase in particular may sound familiar, because it is the sort of thing cited time and again by his critics. Now, in no way do I agree with his behaviour, and I must admit that, at first, I was put off this album simply because of the notoriety surrounding it. However, when I learned that Doherty's partner in crime was one Carl Barat, whose Dirty Pretty Things are amazing, I took the plunge. Boy, oh boy ... more

Advantages Advantages British Rock Will Never be the same again

Disadvantages Disadvantages The band broke up, so there wont be another one

Up The bracket is without a doubt, my favourite album of all time, everything about the album makes me sit up and take notice, makes me dance, and makes me realise just how talented these cockney lads were. Every so often, an album is released that makes the entire country look at themselves, and a band reflects england as well as it ever could be, like the sex pistols and oasis, The Libertines, do just that. For orginality, the libertines do the same as the sex pistold, show us what we are really like, and they do it well, but of cause, it is 70's punk for the new generation, in terms of ... more

Advantages Advantages What we have all been waiting for

Disadvantages Disadvantages Pete Doherty pressed the self destruct button

There is no describing how this album came about, where it came from or what it sounds like. Peter Doherty and Carl (Carlos) Barat have came up with this album that has practically gone un-noticed to the general consensus of Britain. Vertigo - Well this song couldn't be a better album starter for a band that is viewed as mental and out of control, this is exactly what the song is. It is brilliant, your foot will tap so much that you will have one of the most knackered legs ever known to mankind, and it only lasts just over two and a half minutes! If you were seeing The Libs live and this came ... more

Advantages Advantages Summing up everything that is good in British music today

Disadvantages Disadvantages Being too clever can be a downfall

The Libertines first burst onto our scenes a few years back now, playing various local venues, and touring as support acts. A couple of early plays on Radio 1 suddenly brought them to music lovers' ears. A decent set at the Carling festivals didnt hurt them either. NME rave about them, so who are they? They are a band, that to me combine the very best bits of The Jam, The Strokes, Radiohead, Oasis. Infact, they could actually be some kind of genetic spawn of them. Up the Bracket, in my opinion, is one of the best new albums of a British band in years! The first track...Vertigo, kicks off the ... more

Advantages Advantages Consistently brilliant, proper punk

Disadvantages Disadvantages can take a bit to get into

Welcome to the sound of the libertines, you may need to get used to it. Forget the strokes, the white stripes, the darkness, coldplay (yes coldplay too) etc etc, the libertines are surely the best band to come out in the last five years, and it looks like they are here to stay. Their NME award for the Best British Band just a couple of days ago must surely mark a high point for a band that must have gone through hell over the last year or so, with Doherty’s drug problems, leading to him being kicked out of the band and therefore breaking into Carl’s flat (the other vocalist and guitarist) to ... more

Advantages Advantages Generally one of the best records to be released since the turn of the century

Disadvantages Disadvantages Radio America doesn't fit

Firstly I would like to welcome myself to Ciao and say a big hello to all the members of Ciao, before I get accused of plagarising I'm also Flash-Hammer on Epinions. Now down to reviewing this album.... If there is one thing that Britain can honestly claim to be good at contributing to and not be lying, its music. Sure Scotland,England, Northern Ireland and Wales have contributed their fare amount of crap to the music world, but it also gave the world the Stones, the Who, The Clash, The Sex Pistols, Led Zepplin, hell, both Angus Young and Slash were sprouted on the Island. So exactly how I ... more

Advantages Advantages Original, intelligent and total genius!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Maybe slightly underproduced, but that only serves to give the album a rawer feel

The Libertines debut album came at a time when the British music scene lacked originality, and education. At the beginning of the new millenium, the charts were jam packed full of repetitive dance music, and dreadful Simon Cowell creations. Britpop had long since been overdone, and Britain was awaiting it's next great band. The scene had never been better. Despite the lack of quality British bands in the charts, there was a growing crowd building around new upcoming Indie bands, and The Libertines were at the forefront of this, standing head and shoulders above the rest. The major labels ... more

Advantages Advantages Uplifting, great value for money, inspiring.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Parental Guidance for Lyrical Content

Up The Bracket was the debut album from The Libertines- a four piece post-punk revival band from London. They made their name playing in various bars around London, most noticeably Filthy Macnasty's Whiskey Cafe in Islington. The album is definitely my favourite of all time and is awash with clever lyrics, distorted guitar riffs, screaming and shouting. The opening track, Vertigo, is a mixture of all of this and throws you right in the mood for the rest of the album. The sound is hectic and fierce but never unprofessional. There is definitely an element of The Clash in the sound and this isn't ... more
