Advantages: raw, intense and instinctive. An honest view of their world. Disadvantages: None
Pearl Jam came together in 1991 and quickly made their mark as one of the great 90s grunge bands. I was 14 at the time and the fresh new sound and emotive political lyrics struck a chord with that has lasted a life time. Before their debut album 'Ten' Stone Gossard (rhythm guitar) and Jeff Ament (bass) had worked together in previous bands, most acclaimed Green River. They then hooked up through friends with Mike McCready (lead guitar), Eddie Vedder ... ...the grunge scene with political and angst ridden lyrics, simple rhythm chords, heavy guitar riffs and gravelly vocals and combined it technical skill surpassing many of their peers and a 70s stadium rock feel that give them their longivity.
Released in 1993 'Vs' was their second album and it took the band in a new direction. Produced by Brendan O'Brien, the album was recorded with the band playing as a whole, rather than recording each instrument ...

Advantages: Rockin Pearl Jam tracks galore Disadvantages: none
Pearl Jam’s second offering, Vs was the first time I heard the band and I can say I’ve never looked back since. I’m gonna attempt to blitz all their albums for ciao – but it’s going to be some task to get over how much I love this band.
Vs kicks in with ‘Go’ full of pulsating riffs and pounding drums and bass. I can’t help think of Kurt Cobain when listening to this track. In April 1994 at a Pearl ... ...song to Kurt with the pleading lyrics, “please don’t go on me” – a few days later Kurt was gone.
Eddie’s grating vocals on ‘Animal’ have to be sung along with even if the result is a very gruff throat. This has to be a favourite on the album – another rocker with intricate Pearl Jam style guitaring and is full of Eddie shouting, “I’d rather be with an animal”!?!?!
The pace slows ...

Advantages: Seattle rock at it's very finest Disadvantages: Not enough exposure in the UK
Pearl Jam appeared in the early nineties from the remnants of Mother Love Bone and Green River.
They were quickly lumped into the "grunge" category and left to fend against such acts as Nirvana, Soundgarden and Alice In Chains.
Their first album Ten was highly acclaimed and is still one of the biggest selling albums in the world today.
This was there supposedly "difficult" second album, as they attempted to revive the hype of their first album.
... ...this albums stumbles into life. It is a rant about somebody who is suicidal, with Eddie shouting out "Don't go on me!!!". Although this was way before Kurt decided to let go, it was often linked after the event. Brilliant track with plenty of anger and guitars.Yes!!
----Animal----
A song about people that steal from other people in the streets. "I'd rather be with an animal" is the rousing call from Eddie as he vocalises his dislike of these thugs. ...

Pearl Jam's seocond album, VS, is in my opinion their best. Although the band seem to have lost some of their enthusiasm and energy on their records of late, this album took the best songwriting from 'Ten' and added a more agreesive feel resulting in classic songs such as opener 'Go' and 'Leesh'. Although that is not too say the whole album follows that format as their is still an abundance of more diverse material present, such as Indifference. ... ...press, toured constantly and made videos rather than the more media shy cretins they've become of late. Along with Ten is certainly their best collection of tracks to date, and is well recommeded to anyone who's only just got into the band , or who is a fan of their contempories Nirvan and Soundgarden. Eddie Vedder remain one of the best vocalists in rock today ! ...

This album is absolutely amazing! Their follow up to the massive "Ten" I'm sure some people were ready to criticise it but I can't find any fault. The album explodes to life with "Go" and follows with more fast-paced, technical songs such as "Dissident", "Animal", "Rearviewmirror", "Blood" and "Rats" all of which are very rock, very grunge, very heavy guitars, pounding drums with some excellent solos and melodies.
This album, however also brings ... ...songs like "Daughter", "Indifference" and the beautiful "Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town" with more acoustic, detailed and calm songs, songs that could bring a tear to a grown man's eyes!
It was around this time that Pearl Jam were being grouped with bands such as Nirvana, Alice In Chains and Soundgarden. I, however believe this album put Pearl Jam in a league of their own.
This album was recorded in one take, with the band basically ...

Advantages: Some brilliant mellow and slower tunes, if a little dark. Disadvantages: Too much of a stray from the rock routes, too varied in places.
I love Pearl Jam and Ten was amazing, but I really think Vs is the begininng of the end for them.
It starts with two more rocking tracks, not with the same emotional affect as the previous ones, but none the less good solid tunes. So Go and Animal spring past and in comes Daughter, a great, though more mellow, track that acheived a cult following on it's own. Then it goes slightly off track. Glorified G is just a little too "nice", not aggresive ... ...riff, but nothing too memorable then W.M.A. loses all the momentum leaving Blood to warm you up before it shoots back into gear with Rearviewmirror. Then horror!! Rats, a bass guitar intensive song takes the album to a different place, namely not rock, and Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town is a long titled folk style song, not heavy rock as promised by the first album. Finally they wake up, and Leash makes sure you do too as it powers ...

Advantages: typical Pearl Jam Disadvantages: blood I always skip that one
pearl jams second album and they immeadiatly get back to business with a collection of hard rocking songs but this album seems to be more mainstream in its production. Its typical Pearl Jam though a mix of the fast heavy with the sensitive acoustics. daughter is a brillaint track accoustic and only joined by the amps late on for a solo. The best song on side one was Dissident which had a brilliant riff throught the chourus. Side 2 started with the ...

Advantages: A compliation of very good, hard to get bored of, value for money tunes Disadvantages: None that I can think of apart from a couple ot tracks are just average
This album is immense. I have given it 5 stars dispite some of the songs not being quite the standard of the others, but I feel that the good songs are so good that they compencate for them. Normally I would get bored of an album very quickly but this one remains a pleasure to listen to. Unlike many albums it did not take many listens in order to get broken in; I could tell this album was good straight off. Pearl Jam go against the mould of Grunge ... ...famous counterpart Nirvana and softer than their more angry drug obsesed counterpart Alice in Chains, yet they keep the angry and slightly depressive touch of Grunge in their music. Dispite this I feel better for listening to Pearl Jam and comes together to make this superb album. Good songs include Go, Animal, Glorified g and of sourse the beautiful rearview mirror! A must liste-to... ...
