Advantages: Great energy, vocals and melodies; High quality in every aspect Disadvantages: Slightly repetitive; It's not as good as The Libertines
2004 was an unusual year for British music. The most promising home grown band to emerge in a very long time, The Libertines, were cracking up under the global spotlight, and a certain Mr Doherty's drug problems eventually caused a complete, disappointing demise. However, the aforementioned Doherty's songwriting partner, Carl Barat, along with Libertines' drummer, Gary Powell, swiftly moved on to pastures new, with the formation of the Dirty Pretty ... ...Rossomando, who also had experience with the now dead group - he had filled in as a guitarist when Doherty was incapable of performing (guess why). The fourth member of the band was Didz Hammond, who left his band Cooper Temple Clause to join. Perhaps the chance to work with one of the country's most gifted new songwriters, Barat, and the opportunity to join the 'New Libertines' was too hard to resist. Perhaps he knew something. Following the success ...

Advantages: Contines the Libertines legacy with style Disadvantages: Could linger in the shadow of past greatness
...is inevitable. In my opinion, Waterloo to Anywhere trumps anything that Doherty and Babyshambles have produced over the past few years. The maturity of the lyrics, and the punchy, sweaty musical style of Dirty Pretty Things is far superior to Doherty's pseudo-poetic ramblings and mediocre instrumental arrangements. Although, some are bound to disagree....
Overall, if I were to sum this album up in 3 words, I'd have to say:
Lyrical; Drunken; Passionate. ...

Advantages: Some excellent tracks, More for the fans of Libertines Disadvantages: Some dismal tracks, lacks inspiration at times
...you listen to this album, Waterloo to Anywhere, it is clear that Carl Barāt was also a key cog in the Libertines machine.
Waterloo to Anywhere is DPT's first album and was released in 2006, a 12 track, 36 minute offering, not exactly lengthy, but a standard sort of album nowadays.

[Track 1 - Deadwood]

Waterloo To Anywhere is a decent offering to be fair, it has some really strong tracks but falls down with some pitiful songs in between its highlights of it's start and end. The album deservedly highlights Barāt's contribution to The Libertines and proves he is a very competent musician in his own right. On the other hand, it also reflects how Dirty Pretty Things are still capable of making some poor music at times. I still preferred ...

Advantages: Lyrically, musically and vocally catchy-punk rock outfit with much acclaim. Disadvantages: I just dont find this band to stand out from the crowd nor have much originality.
The debut album (Waterloo To Anywhere) by British indie rock outfit Dirty Pretty Things is fronted by former Libertine Carl Barāt. I will start by talking about one of my favourite things about this album and that's the wonderful artwork on the cover. It's done by Artist Hannah Bays and I really appreciate the effort gone in to the cover design as we are now in the age of the download where inlay art is really falling by the wayside, sadly. Although ... ...Pretty Things, I can never quite muster the energy to like them. I think this is because although their sound is really good and definitely likeable, they sort of seem to blend into other bands in this genre and I struggle to be able to distinguish their sound from others like them. This album is at best catchy and at worst repetitive; although I don't doubt their ability to get a bunch of teenagers at a gig riled up and excited. My favourite song ...

Advantages: Up beat and catchy Disadvantages: Pricey in most UK stores and can be repetitive

Advantages: Emotion packed Disadvantages: Lyrica content sometimes sketchy
...first album offering. Waterloo to Anywhere is frighteningly graphic in its overtly personal references. Anyone who reads my reviews may have already guessed I am a huge Pete and Carl fan from the early days of the Libertines. Now although Carlos has denied the lyrical content in this album is in no way referential to his past bust ups with Peter its a bit of a no-brainer really to see it quite clearly is. That said I love this album , its dark, its ... ...Carl does so well. Its not written with the same genius that the Libertines album's were , obviously missing Peters writing skills which in my opinion surpass most out there this decade. Dirty Pretty Things still however manage to offer more then your average rock band. Sorry if I am being repetitive at this point but its because what's being sung about is so very real, laid bare for all to see exactly how heartbreaking the split was from his own ...

Advantages: Some very catchy tunes Disadvantages: Not much variety throughout the album. Could be considered boring.
Waterloo to Anywhere hardly feels like a debut album. The baggage which Carl Barāt is still carrying with him after he jumped ship from The Libertines oozes out of every snarling syllable. Though he denies in interviews that his songs are about Pete Doherty, who would expect him to say anything else? In the lines, "I knew all along that I was right at the start about the seeds of the weeds that grew in your heart" It's so painfully obvious how childishly ... ...along that Pete couldn't handle the drugs. The obvious question is, "Then why did you give them to him?" Alas I'm not in the position to ask him that. He adds to the evidence by screaming the everlasting playground chant, "Bang bang, you're dead". Bitterness aside, Carl is indeed a fine tunesmith, as is finely exhibited in the intriguing intricacies of the uplifting anthemic hit, "Bang Band, You're Dead", accompanied by the simply thundering "Deadwood". ...
