Advantages: Moody and dark, a weird mix of song types! Disadvantages: None (i say that to a lot of albums, but seriously, NONE)
...to alot of critical acclaim. Without You I'm Nothing is the bands second album and many regard it as their best. It's an album of dark moody and emotional rock. Pure Morning - Probably the most popular Placebo song. This song was the first single off WYIN and a big hit. This song is great and the lyrics here are fantastic and will stay in your head. 'A friend in need is a friend in deed, a friend with weed is better. A friend with breasts and all ... ...the song it is.
Without You I'm Nothing - Every band has their best song. It comes eventually and the title song of this album just happens to be Placebo. This has to be one of the best songs ever. It's a sad depressing song but so beautiful. Brains voice is incredible and he shows off some of his guitar skill here. This song is practicly perfect. The right length, a beautiful melody, perfect chorus it's the highlight of the album.

Advantages: Fairly solid progression from first album Disadvantages: Too many fillers
...although it could have done without the extra outro part.
Next, the title track. Why, oh why, does Brian tune his guitar like that?!? The chords in this song are SOOOO weird. But after a few listens, this song does start to get to you. The lyrics are, again, typical Placebo. You could probably find just about any meaning in them, so they sort of become meaningless after a while. This is a great song, though - if not slightly depressing. The chorus ... ...the first of the fillers. It's okay, but it gives me the impression that they wrote a song just to fit in as many lyrics as possible, but then didn't say much in it. "The Crawl" is depressing. Enough said. Then "Every You Every Me"! This is a great song. The guitar riff is really cool, the lyrics and phrasing are interesting. This is more like it - another single. "My Sweet Prince" is another boring quiet one - okay if you like that sort of thing, ...

...seriously limited commercial success. 1998's Without You I'm Nothing is probably their most commercially successful album, with well known songs like Every You Every Me and Pure Morning. But, is it good?
I know when I review albums I generally go through them song by song, but after my rift with grannycroft over this subject, I'm not going to do that. Basically, I'm just going to write about it and see how it is rated.
This is a bit of a mixed ... ...like Without You I'm Nothing (which is a class song), The Crawl and Burger Queen. There's faster, punky songs like Brick Sh*thouse, Every You Every Me and Scared Of Girls. There's dead slow songs like My Sweet Prince. Then theres the other songs. Its all a bit of a mixed bag. usually on these kind of albums though, when you listen to the whole album they seem to fit together. On WYIN, they don't. Advantages: Good songwriting,Great Songs, Fabulous Band Disadvantages:
I bought this album on the strengh of the last one, and found it to be much better. It's more subtle, and not as instant as 'Placebo', but the songs have a beauty of their own.
The best songs on the album are the less 'rock' ones, in particular 'Ask For Answers' and 'My Sweet Prince'.However, the opening 'Pure Morning' is brilliant, providing a fantastic, recognisable song and setting the standard for the rest of the album.
The artwork of the cd ...

...Placebo album in my opinion without these the album wouldnt stand up.
Track five is the title track "Without you i'm Nothing" which David Bowie a year later joined to sing with Brian on the single release. Its a midtempo song that really gets going late in the song.
"Every You and Every Me" the eight song on this album is perhaps the catchiest of the lot featured heavily on the Cruel Intentions movie. "Caaause theres nothing else to do, every me ... ...been this much at stake!"
"Scared of Girls" a heavier song one of the weaker perhaps filler tunes "Her younger sister had a blister where i kissed her" - perhaps not the shakespeare of this generation, on this track at least. Moving on.
Final Track:Burger Queen : I remember this song as being my favourite off the album back then i think it still has that appeal now. Very slow "Came to this world by caeserian section, takes him all day to get an ...

Advantages: it's an amazing album Disadvantages: none
With out you I’m nothing is a deeply moving and thought provoking album. Pure Morning is the song that every one know …a friend with weed… and all that. Brick shit house, well my mates little bro is obsessed with that song, he thinks it is absolutely amazing and I can’t argue with that. Every me Ever you is definitely the sing along track. Scared of girls is just sublime in my humble opinion, Burger Queen is the most moving track on the album and ... ...just me. The hidden track (evil dildo) is very odd but also very cool. Admittedly I may be a bit bias but for me there is nothing that Brain Molko can do wrong. His voice and clothes may not be to every ones taste (“a cock in a frock etc”) but I think he is wonderful and that every one should worship him for the genius that he is. ...

...is that people judge them without listening to the music. Without You I'm Nothing (WYIN) is the follow up to the debut self titled album. I liked the first album. It wasn't great but it’s a solid enough record. I was very surprised by WYIN. Seldom have I listened to an album as diverse and interesting as this one. The great thing about Placebo songs is the opening sounds grab you in every song. Molko has a wonderful and unique voice which he ... ...you could hope for. The opening track "Pure Morning” sufficiently impressed the Guinness bosses to use it as the track for one of their adverts. I am sure many people will have heard the track on the advert and liked it but won’t have been aware who it was by. The album closes with "Burger Queen" which is a personal favourite. It is a ballad and closes the album perfectly. If you have not listened to this album give it a try, you will ...

Advantages: Without you I'm nothing, Every you Every me. Disadvantages: None really.
It was described as the difficult second album by the band. The punky, sex driven scream of their self titled debut album raised a few eyebrows within the mainstream media who possibly failed to quite understand the humour within some of the songs. Nancy Boy however was a big hit and managed to get to number 4 in the UK charts and an appearance for the band on Top of the Pops which may have shocked people. How does 'Without you I'm Nothing' compare? ... ...the first single. 'Pure Morning' had been an accident in many ways and was only to be a b-side until the band decided it was too good not to have it on the album. Oh how times have changed! Now the band describe it as 'Pure Boring' as they are fed up of playing it to the crowds of people who just expect them to play it. It's soft melody's echo in your mind for quite some time after hearing it though...
'Brick Shithouse' goes back to the more guitar ...

Advantages: Beautiful music. Disadvantages: Not as rocking as their debut
I wasn't really struck by the singles on this album, and as it was released at the same time as a few others that I'd been waiting for, I left this CD out of my collection, until I was able to pick it up in a 2 for £20 deal (with the excellent Mobile Home, Longpigs). I then realised what I had been missing out on. With more slow numbers than their self titled debut album, this has a more mature sound, and Pure Morning could be a sign of things to ...

Advantages: Great songs Disadvantages: Bland at first listen
After the success of their first album, mainly due to the hit single 'Nancy Boy', following their debut would be quite a challenge. After the success of 'Nancy Boy' the band were on a high. This album is the comedown.
This is an album that will pass you by at first listen, you might sing along to the opening track 'Pure Morning', and grin as you hear some of the almost childlike rhymes in the lyrics, but otherwise it does nothing and you end up ... ...then it hits you..
After a few listens you cannot help but feel like you have been punched in the gut after listening to this album, it fills you with some sort of rage, but yet again leaves you feeling empty, just thinking 'what have I done.' This is probably exactly how Brian Molko felt after the high of the bands debut and realising one day that everything that goes up has to come down. Luckily for him he was able to put these emotions into songs ...

I was once and true pop fan in my late teens...after discovering my sexuality and turned into a freak mt taste in music slightly changed. I still like pop and can't stand heavy metal, indie was the only music you could hear bursting from my room. My girlfriend introducedme to Placebo and I've never turned back. Every song is a work of art. Poetry set to music. Every song has such a deep meaning and the music it is set to is outstanding.
A lttle ... ...can't wait for the new album to hit the shelves.
For pop fans Brian's voice is as sweet as any pop diva...and for rock fans the lyrics are as poetic and meaningful. A must for any true music fans collection. You will know every word of ever song and it will naver be out of your CD player. ...

Advantages: Placebo rock, haunting lyrics, loud guitars, reflective melodies, everything is here. Disadvantages: none
This album is a masterpiece which will creep up to you like a cat and sometimes snugly brush itself against your legs and purr at you and sometimes BANG it explodes in your face in a clash of drums and loud guitar riffs. Lyrics are at all times reflective, harsh and observant with Brian Molko utilising the english language to portray confusion, love and the most remorseless hatred. From this album, Every You and Every Me, the smash single from the ... ...angst laden verses and a recognisable sing along chorus. "The Crawl" is more subversively reflective and poignant with haunting vocals and an atmospheric bass line which will have you hanging on every last syllable. "Pure Morning" is an anthem. Pure Morning (one of the four tracks released)pushed me to buy and try which I'm certainly glad ... ...My Sweet Prince (now my favourite Placebo track) which is in contrast again to the sexual undertones of Every You Every Me (also on Cruel Intentions Soundtrack). After listening to the bands first album, self titled "Placebo", multiple times and seeing them play live at the Leas Cliff Hall, Folkestone, I felt compelled to buy the bands second album "Without You I'm Nothing".
