Do you really need to know anything about me? It's not as if we'll ever meet. It's pretty obvious what I like if you read my reviews, so what's the pint in me telling you here?

With the young beat combo The Beatles topping the album charts all over the world recently, I thought it would be nice to dip into their back catelogue, because some who have only just been exposed to "1" may not be aware of the delights to be found on the best body of work the band created.
The 1960s were a period of massive social and demographic change and it seems that no other band echo this change in the way the Beatles did. Quite simply, no other mainstream pop group has evolved so rapidly, while maintaining and improving their essential qualities in the history of contemporary pop music in the way the Beatles have. There is no defining song or album that can catch the Beatles sound. However, "Revolver", released in the middle of their recorded life-span in 1966 may well be the Beatles at their very best.
"Revolver" has topped various polls for the best LP of all-time and quite rightly so in my opinion, but why? What is it that makes this album so great? Firstly, all the songs have the genetic makeup of a Beatles penned song. The sweet harmonies of "I Want To Tell You2 and "Here, There and Everywhere" mixed with the catchy stomp of 'Good Day Sunshine' and Got To Get You Into My Life'. The origins of this sound can be traced right back to "Love Me Do" in 1962 and was still evident in their last recorded release proper "Abbey Road".
The seeds of experimentation that were to surface so clearly in their next LP "St. Peppers..." and the '"Magical Mystery Tour" EP not only began to break the surface, but positively grow into the sun. In fact, possibly the most radical Beatles track recorded, the one-note "big-beat" "Tomorrow Never Knows" was, and remains an audacious, but wonderful finale to the LP. The version of this tract available on 'The Beatles Anthology II' is a sign of how painstaking it was for John Lennon and the producer George Martin to construct the track in its final, glorious form.
While "St. Peppers..." is regarded as the great experimental record, it hasn't got the quality that 'Revolver' simply oozes. A Song like "Within You And Without You" pails in comparison with the similar "Love You Too", for example. The beauty of "Eleanor Rigby", the joy of "Good Day Sunshine" and the wonderful lyrical wit of the opener "Taxman" can surely never be eclipsed as a collective body of work. For many the nostalgia factor is also like a magnet, not just for children of the 1960s. As a young child in the mid 1980s 'Yellow Submarine' was my daily soundtrack.
The influence of Beatles on other artist has been phenomenal, not just in the retro-rock of Oasis, but in the experimentation of the likes of Super Furry Animals and the "big-beat" dance of The Chemical Brothers (who's "Setting Sun" sounds not dissimilar to "Tomorrow Never Knows".
Even 35 years on, when so many other LPs have been forgotten and many other brilliant works have been created, I believe that nothing has emulated The Beatles' "Revolver". It will blow you away.

I don't have revolver, although I have half the songs on it in one form or another, but from my current knowledge I'd say you were right. I'll have to get myself a copy and listen to the lesser known tracks. Cheers, Davie.
