protecting the environment, reversing climate change, and tendering disaster relief, this compilation pairs Western pop stars (U2, Sting, Artic Monkeys, et al) and their hits with all-new arrangements performed by members of Cuba's Buena Vista Social Club plus other Havana-based talent. The overall effect is of a well-meaning but not entirely simpatico mutual admiration society. Coldplay's "Clocks" is a good example; the lead vocal is coolly lethargic, engulfing the spiky crags of the rhythm section like syrup on a waffle. But then, most of the singers sound strangely unconnected to the frisky 1-2-3/1-2 of the clavé beat. The contrast between the two groups of players could have been bracing, and to many ears it perhaps will be, but most of the time, they seem to transmitting from parallel universes. Not surprisingly, the best tracks are those in which hometown icons are left to do what they do best. But the late, great Ibrahim Ferrer's marvelous interpretation of "As Time Goes By" (his final recording) and Omara Portuondo's wistful yet powerful cover of "Killing Me Softly" only serve to further showcase what's amiss with the rest of the album. --Christina Roden

"I knew it was them" I said to myself! Anyway, I bought it straight away just on the strength of that one track and was very pleased by all the other tracks on the Album. Not only have the Buena Vista Social Club given the Cuban treatment to Coldplay, but also to tracks by Sting, Arctic Monkeys, Jack Johnson, Maroon 5 and Kaiser Chiefs.

This has to be one of my most played albums since I bought it 2 months ago. I listen to Chill FM on the internet and they had been playing this funky Cuban version of Coldplays Clocks a couple of times. I searched and searched to find out who had done it and after a week or so came up with this - Rhythms Del Mundo by the Buena Vista Social Club.

Buena Vista's ability to revamp these modern favorites in such a funky Cuban style is excellent. Perfect evening music for entertaining friends. Its certainly a one off and the only mistake you could make is to expect to hear regular Buena Vista on this CD.
Not only is it great music but after reading the insert I realized a minimum of £2 from each sale goes to Artists Project Earth, a charity for natural disaster relief and climate change awareness programmes. The CD packaging is apparently carbon neutral - being made from some kind of potato starch plastic - and the booklet insert contains some very inspirational words and helpful tips from famous ecologists such as George Monbiot and Al Gore.
Its a shame, haven't really heard this record being pushed very much which surprises me as the music is great and it certainly has a good cause. This CD is a fast favorite and is a must have for any definitive music collection.
