Eliza Carthy is one of the rising stars of the British "new roots" scene. An excellent ... more
fiddler and a pretty good singer, she seems to have inherited her well-known musical parents' (Norma Waterson and Martin Carthy's) dual focus, striving to proclaim her country's rich folk heritage while also looking towards popular music for revitalization. Red is the more aggressive of the two CDs in this set. Her band uses reggae, jazz, 90s rave and 60s folk-rock to spice up old folk songs and a few originals--some strongly imitative of early Steeleye Span and Fairport Convention. The winners of this set are actually the ones that stray as far from tradition as they can--mom's "Stumbling On" has a nice barrelhouse groove, and Eliza's own "Russia (Call Waiting)" pushes the electronic limits--and it's a grand time. Rice is the more solid folk set, and possibly the better of the two CDs. Backed by Saul Rose on accordions, the mysterious "Fontenots" on guitar and vocals, Ed Boyd on guitar, and Eleanor Waterson and Lucy Adamson vocals, this is straight ahead power folk, with lots of attitude and energy. Anyone who doubts this young artist's right to be in the British folk literati need only listen to the medley "Zycanthos Jig" to feel her grace, skill, and understanding of the music. Red Rice is an adventurous project for a young artist; and two full hours of music may have been a stretch, but the magical high moments are many and well worth the exploration. --Louis Gibson

...well we're talking The Royal Family of English Contemparary Folk Music. If you know Folk Music you know who they are, if you don't, then it won't stop you listenting to and apprieciating Elizas' music.
It's that music that makes her a Performer of Pedigree as well. Like so many Folk Musicians of today she takes music of the English Folk tradition and makes it relevent and eminently listenable to todays audiences.
Films like "Titanic," "Braveheart," "Lord Of The Rings," and countless other use haunting Celtic themes, and that music has become an international marketing phenomenom. Eliza takes beautiful English songs, dance tunes and melodies that rarely been heard for decades ...

When we decided it was time to start weaning our baby we didn't really know where to start but the health visitor recommended we start off introducing baby rice to our daughter and to take it from there. Again, like I have done with so many other baby products, I stood in the aisle of the supermarket and wondered which brand to buy.
Eventually I chose Organix seeing as it was slightly more expensive than the others and the fact it was made from wholegrain so surely packed with all the goodness my baby would need!
Some people are against this kind of feeding, they prefer everything to be homemade so you know exactly what has gone into it but sometimes it's just not possible to be able to make something or for it to be so convinient as baby rice.
So what is baby rice?
Being a new mum and totally clueless i was expecting ...

Hands up if you ever wanted to be a racing driver when you were younger? Or even if you still harbour dreams of being one? I know I certainly did. It didn't matter to me whether I was racing in rallying, Touring Cars or in Formula 1; I just wanted to be paid for driving very fast. There was a spell in my younger years where I even had a vague ambition of being a motorway policeman, for much the same reason.
Perry McCarthy had the same dream. His childhood certainly prepared him for the world of being a racing driver, as he had a daredevil streak and an eye for the ladies, even at the age of six. But this would be as close as he came to fulfilling his dream until he was 18 and had a session at Brands Hatch which proved him to be a natural driver.
From here on, Perry's life becomes a bit of a rollercoaster ride. Motor racing is ...
