Jack Teagarden was the first jazz trombonist to make the instrument sing. Before he came ... more
along with his soft, lyrical approach, there was still something slightly clownish about the trombone, all exaggerated slides and rasps. Teagarden also played and sang the blues more naturally than any white man had done before. These 18 numbers come from his early career, between 1929 and 1934, when he was still something of a juvenile wonder. Everybody wanted him to play on their sessions and he was eager to oblige. Mostly he is surrounded by his young contemporaries, future jazz stars such as Benny Goodman, Jimmy Dorsey and Glenn Miller. The numbers include such jazz standards as "Basin Street Blues", "Dinah" and "Davenport Blues", along with ballads like the title song and the beautiful "A Hundred Years From Today". An excellent selection, full of surprise and variety. --Dave Gelly

Advantages: Decent entertainment Disadvantages: Non-fans of the show will just think they've ruined the songs
from buying "The Simpsons Sing the Blues" when I saw it on sale in Asda for £3, as I figured that the amount of entertainment it would provide would outweigh the number of duff notes they would hit.
The album opens with "Do The Bartman" which was a number 1 single way back in 1991, well before "The Simpsons" had become as popular in the UK as it is now. It's certainly a very dated song now, being the kind of pop-dance-rap hybrid that was so popular at the time. The song was supposedly written by Michael Jackson and there are a couple of "Thriller" sounding moments and Michael Jackson references which suggest the man has a better sense of humour and more of a tendency to poke fun at himself than I would previously have credited him with. This may well be familiar to fans of the show, especially as the video was an extra in the 4th ...

10 Indispensable Things With You On Holiday
When going on holidays I always plan everything and then end up forgetting something useful by the time I head away. Here is my list of things totake with you on holiday:
1. First Aid Kit - you never know what's going to happen to you when you are away, so it's best to be prepared. By bringing a basic first aid kit you will have these items when needed. I find plasters come in very handy, as you tend to walk a lot and get blisters on you feet on holidays.
2. Sunscreen - even if you are going to somewhere that is not very sunny you can never be too sure what the weather will be like. If you are going to be on a beach holiday or somewhere with strong sun you are advised to buy a high factor of sunscreen to stop yourself from burning. Even if you are on the ski slopes you have to ...
Advantages: Sunshine between showers. Disadvantages: Showers.

Like sunshine follows rain, Aspen follows a rare serious op with a p*ss-take.
Which, obviously, is exactly what this is.
Scotland is a beautiful country, full of beautiful people.
You will be welcome here, and you will love it.
And if you can't find anyone else to welcome you, though I'm sure you will, email Aspen.
I hope the Scottish Tourist Board has a sense of humour!
PS. I limited this to ten items, 'cos I thought it would get boring otherwise. But if you want an eleventh item totake, take me. I may be here already, but I'm always open to offers. (And, hey, I've got my sense of humour back! That must be worth a free holiday!)
PPS. Thanks to FTC for reminding me - item 12 is a bottle of Glen Ord. It's a damn site cheaper OntheContinent than it is here!! ...
