sounds and Simon Le Bon's uninflected vocals, the misty ballads "Lonely in Your Nightmare" and "Save a Prayer" can still pull heavily on your heartstrings. With the dance-oriented singles "Rio" and "Hungry Like the Wolf", you lighten up a bit, but the songs are far from airy or whimsical. One anomaly in this release, though, is the inappropriate prominence of John Taylor's bass lines. In every song, it sounds as if he is mixed more in expectation of a solo than as an integral part of the rhythm section. Ignore this technical distraction, however, and you'll enjoy rediscovering this gorgeous body of water-coloured synthpop.--Beth Bessmer

"The Reflex" opens with one of the best bass-fuelled intros ever, remaining more in the dance-pop arena than the rest of the album. Lyrically, the song contains one of the most memorable Duran Duran lines of all time, "Fl-Fl-Fl-Fl-Flex", which is reason enough to buy the whole stable. "Union of the Snake" is a mix of male ritual, slithering synths and big bad beats. Along with their first two albums, Seven & the Ragged Tiger is necessary to effectively complete the early Duran Duran experience. Interesting haircuts remain optional. --Steve Gdula

Advantages: One of the best albums ever Disadvantages: None
...one ……
To me Rio is the best ever Duran Duran album, every song on this is a masterpiece and sounds as fresh as it did when it was made and released in 1982.
The song "Rio" became a number one hit straight away after it's release and it proved that even though the band had only been going for a year they were well established and had thousands of fans. "Rio" really did have it all and the band brought out their best album ever in their history ... ...the cover but without the Rio title. I thought that this worked well for the disk, eye catching and easy going.
The little booklet inside has all the lyrics to every song from the album here along with a few pictures of the band that I thought was a good touch, I seem to remember them having something similar in their record album of the time (I think)
As this was recorded a while ago I thought the sound transfer was done very well and sounds like ...

Advantages: Takes you back to your youth - if you're 30 something! Disadvantages: Only 9 tracks
...second album - Rio.
Rio was originally released at the tail end of 1982 on vinyl. The cd version that I own, was digitally remastered and released in 2001 by EMI.
The front cover is mainly dark pink with the drawing of a woman's face in the centre.
Track 1 - Rio
The title track, and surely an 80's classic. An upbeat tune with a saxophone solo near the end.
Track 2 - My Own Way
Another up tempo tune, but with slightly repetitive lyrics.
Track ... ...song.
Track 4 - Hungry Like The Wolf
Reached the Top 10 in 1982, so would be known to many of you. Catchy and up beat - good to sing along to.
Track 5 - Hold Back The Rain
Sung passionately by Le Bon, but a typical 'album track'. Up tempo again.
Track 6 - New Religion
This is described above the lyrics as " A dialogue between the ego and the alter ego".
It's a lengthy track, absolutely packed out with lyrics that are sung very quickly. Often ...

Advantages: Friendsreunited classic album for those in their thirties Disadvantages: None
Although I was not a fan of Duran Duran when bought this tape, I soon got lost in the tones and lyrics of band that I did not realise were going to be so big....
That was then and this is now.... Blowing the dust of the old tape and finding it only last 10 miles of a 2 hr journey made me feel sad. So when arriving at the destination I headed straight for a record shop to get the CD. After much searching.... Success and I eagerly gave my credit card ... ...no CD player, I raced to Dixons to get a cheap CD player - they had none so I went to Argos....
£25.99 later I was in business.... Nope - i had not got the batteries... Got the batteries, sat down on bench and listened to a blast from the past... I spent a whole hour on a bench listening to one of the greatest bands from 80s - Duran Duran and the album was RIO....
1. Rio
Classic and one my favourites, if you listen to no other track on the CD ...

Advantages: fantastic album Disadvantages: not enough tracks
...even today are well known. Rio and Save a prayer. I recently saw the guys play in Birmingham and the songs are timeless. Some of my personal favourites off the album are Lonley in your nightmear, Hold back the rain, the chauffeur. This is defently a must have album for anyone new discovering the joys of Duran Duran. IN 2001 they remastered the cd and it now has videos to watch on the disc. This album defently sounds a lot different in style to the ... ...romantic phase. Simon wrote hold back the rain for John Taylor when he was going threw a bad phase with the drink and drugs. Its very gard personally to read in to simons lyrics as for me the mean one thing but for someone else they mean another. Hungry like the wolf is a rocky number. For anyone reading this review and not having any idea about duran. Simon le bon is the singer and John Taylor is bass, Roger Taylor is drums and Andy Taylor is lead ...

Advantages: Some good tracks Disadvantages: Fatty Le Bon
...Save A Prayer (2) and Rio (9). That last one was also the title of their second album, which itself made number 2 in the UK. It was a far more confident affair than their first set.
But hit singles do not a critical triumph make and they continued to ship a lot of artistic criticism - vacuous was probably the word used most often. ...

Advantages: timeless album Disadvantages: cardboard cover
...Back in 1982 duranduran were starting to become very hot property indeed. Rio, the title track of the album was released along with a very expensive very lavish video, for which the band has been slated ever since, if the video did anything, it certainly brought the five duran boys a large amount of attention. Hungry like the wolf also featured the same lavishness and had a certain raiders of the lost ark style charm.
The best thing that could ever happen to the band was just around the corner MTV. Hungry like the wolf remians one of mtvs biggest ever videos, and although mtv have moved on away from the 80's heroes, both the band and the channel owed a huge debt to each other. Rod Stewart once said that lesser bands like duranduran owed a lot to mtv, but then rod stewart always was a dickhead.
The thing is, although Duran...

...style.
4.: Tainted Love - Soft Cell
Another all time classic, with Marc Almond providing his unique style of voice to it. Still a floor filler to this day.
5.: Don't You Want Me - Human League
Phil Oakley and the girls were arguably Sheffield’s biggest export of the 1980’s. This song has managed to be presented to a more recent audience with the recent motor vehicle commercial.
6.: Rio - DuranDuran
I particularly enjoyed this at the time it was released but I guess that was more to do with the scantily clad females in the video rather than Simon Le Bon’s dulcet tones !!. Fairly typical eighties pop stuff.
7.: Take On Me - A-Ha
Norway’s answer to Take That and Bros, when I was growing up all the girls used to fancy Morten. This was A-Ha’s debut single and was a huge hit.
8.: Good Heart - Sharkey, Feargal...

Advantages: All the family will enjoy it, classic songs Disadvantages: BBC Radio 2
...1979 Steve joined Radio 1 originally presenting a Saturday night show, then a chat show, the Top 40, and, with Mike Read as his partner the entertaining Read and Wright show.
In 1982 he moved to daytime with 'Steve Wright in the Afternoon'. This was a popular, entertaining and innovative programme with comical guests such as Mr. Angry from Purley, and 'Mick Jagger', catchphrases such as 'Get Some Therapy' and 'He's Allright'.
