channels and maybe it does get the odd bit of 'extra' airtime. (E.g. "Close To Me" being on a BBC Three programme...it's name escapes me, but it may have been the 'Smoking Room'? Answers on a postcard...)
Their 'greatesthits' album, released in 2001 through Fiction Records and only done so on the basis that Smith could choose the tracks himself is 19 tracks that show a chronological tale of the band and their music through the years. (Although two of the tracks are brand new!)
Opening track "Boys Don't Cry" was released in June 1979, eight years before I was born. Yet with it's instantly recognisable guitar riff it's something that the countless bands since then that have idolised and 'taken influence' from the Cure could take the rest of time to improve on. I believe the saying is along the lines of put some monkeys in a room ...
Advantages: Original. Excellent debut from Etheridge. Talented vocal and instrumental work. Disadvantages: The Gawd-awful liner notes! AAH!
play when you're feeling moody and sullen, though it is also a good example of less-than-popular musical stylings. Unfortunately, Melissa is just not that popular in the States anymore, though I will explain why in a later review.
I defintely recommend this album, if only because it is a nostalgic look back at the eighties, when heavy bass and straightforward guitar work were utilized. Etheridge may not provoke many thoughts in you, but she will definitely stir up the darker depths of your soul. And, of course, she just might entertain you. ...
Advantages: Great tracks old and new Disadvantages: None
I am a big fan of Whitney Houston, I think she has a beautiful, moving voice that has not been beaten since. I have already done a review on her first album, Whitney Houston but by far my favourite album of hers has to be Whitney, The GreatestHits!
Just a little background on the queen of pop herself incase you haven't heard of her:
Whitney Houston was born on August 9th, 1963 and is an extremely successful recording artist and actress. She comes from a very successful family and upbringing, her aunt is Dionne Warwick and her godmother is Aretha Franklin. Music was in the blood and she starting singing gospel music in her local church at aged 11. In the words of Clive Davis, written on one of the booklets that comes with the CD's, "For the next generation, there's a singer that combines the fiery gospel of Aretha Franklin ...

Album Notes
Personnel: Melissa Etheridge. Recording information: 1988 - 2005. As one of the most prominent women in rock, Melissa Etheridge has blazed a striking path through the genre with her soulful, gritty voice and formidable guitar playing. In 1993, Etheridge took the bold step of coming out as a lesbian, and, in 2004, she showed even more tenacity by successfully battling breast cancer. This (mostly) chronologically ordered 17-track compilation presents highlights from Etheridge's remarkable career, and features five new tracks, including her fierce take on Janis Joplin's "Piece of My Heart." Another excellent cover tune, a stirring 2005 rendition of Tom Petty's "Refugee," begins GREATEST HITS, which swiftly switches gears to Etheridge's early work, including the restless "Bring Me Some Water" and the road-trip narrative "You Can Sleep While I Drive." The disc also touches on the singer/songwriter's most successful singles (the rollicking "I'm the Only One" and the anthemic "Come to My Window"), before settling into Etheridge's triumphant post-cancer tracks, most notably the aforementioned Joplin song and the determined "I Run for Life." A concise overview of Etheridge's catalog with plenty of previously unreleased material, THE ROAD LESS TRAVELED is sure to please longtime fans, and it serves as an ideal introduction for those unfamiliar with the performer's potent brand of rock.
