Joy Fielding has been writing great suspense novels since about the early eighties. Each one I have read has been a terrific page turner which has kept me on the edge of my seat all the way through! Mad RiverRoad was another such book and did not disappoint in the least!
There are four main characters in Mad RiverRoad. Jamie Kellogg is lonely and vulnerable. She has had one failed marriage and has just discovered that her boyfriend is actually married. When she meets the charming Brad Fisher, who says all the right things to her - telling her how clever and beautiful she is - she falls for him right away. It's not long before she has given up her job and allowed him to persuade her to go on an adventure travelling halfway across America. However, what seemed at first to be a dream adventure soon turns into her worst nightmare ...
Advantages: Great descriptions of the times, Australia Disadvantages: None
The Secret River
London 1806 - William Thornhill, happily wedded to his childhood sweetheart Sal, is a waterman on the River Thames. Life is tough but bearable until William makes a mistake, a bad mistake for which he and his family are made to pay dearly. His sentence: to be transported to New South Wales for the term of his natural life.

This story is basically in two parts, Will's London life and then his Australian life. The two are most definitely linked to each other but in terms of Will's and Sal's feelings and adventures they are worlds apart, or you could say continents apart. The story ...
Advantages: An expansive lyrical visionary dreamland Disadvantages: Makes you wanna road trip sooo bad.
I always knew I needed to escape the squalor and opression of life. I just never knew how. Until I read on the road by Jack Keruoac( who was quite hot in a James Dean kinda way but apparently a terrible sexist). It challenged my perspective, and ruined my cosy little life plan.
On the road is so much more than a roadtrippin' travelogue. It's all the joy, sadness, limitation, freedom, love , hate, craziness ,heat and sweat of life. Our narrator Sal Paradise is a writer of the infamous beat generation. We're supposed to follow him, but everyone knows Sal's crazy monkeyboy buddy Dean Moriarty (Neal Cassidy in disguise) is where the real action lies.
The book hurtles through smokey nightclubs, blue starry city nights across America in hot pursuit of...well, Dean mostly, and all the bug eyed wide open spaces and sleazy city scapes ...
