After the massive worldwide success and acclaim of Iron Maiden's 'comeback' album with Smith and Dickinson, 'Brave New World', Maiden were ready to take the message out to the fans again. The pinnacle of this touring was at the 'Rock in Rio' festival, in January 2001, playing to a quarter of a million fans. This became the fifth live album of their career. The 'Real live one', 'Real dead one' and 'Real live dead one' albums were not standard-bearers, due mainly to their poor selection of tracks. After 'Live After Death', there was room for another monumental live album, and this was it, they hoped.
It was recorded on 19th January 2001, all the tracks from the one night, spread over two CD's. Unlike 'Live after Death', there is no equipment itinerary, but there are great inside graphics by Peacock, good photos of the band in action and relaxing, and the cardboard casing has a moving hologram image of Eddie. As well as the 19 tracks, there are CD-Rom enhanced extras on both CD's, the 'Brave New World' live video footage, and 'A day in the life' of Iron Maiden, also filmed at 'Rock in Rio'. These are well worth checking out if you're a true fan.
DISC ONE:
1. 'Intro.' Apparently, this is 'Arthur's Farewell', composed by Jerry Goldsmith. Epic and orchestral, it is suitable entrance music.
2. 'The Wicker Man' A devestating opener, a thunderstorm of testosterone-charged hard guitars and superb bass drums on the chorus. Sound quality is superb, and Dickinson is in fine voice.
3. 'Ghost of the Navigator' "If you were navigating the seas of life, you might come across this character" says Dickinson. Opening with that wonderful 'maritime' riff, this is bellowed out splendidly.
4. 'Brave new world' The title track from their latest album, this goes down well, with great mellower moments to offset the hard rock.
5. 'Wrathchild' Dickinson introduces this as a track from Maiden's 'jurassic period'! This classic goes down a storm, played at lightning speed, and with Dickinson reaching more high notes than you might expect of a man of his age!
6. '2 minutes to the midnight' A huge roar from the crowd greets this, a true metal 'balls-to-the-wall' anthem!
7. 'Blood brothers' This passionate track is dedicated by Dickinson to; "supporters of Iron Maiden and metal in South America". A great change of pace.
8. 'Sign of the cross' One of the two epics based on Scottish clans, this is one of the few representatives of the Blaze Bayley era Maiden catalogue. Dickinson's voice is perfectly suited, and this is musically intricate, lasting almost eleven minutes!
9. 'The mercenary' From the intricate passion of the previous track, we are blown away by this blistering display of chest-beating machismo. Another well-chosen change of pace.
10. 'The trooper' Rounding off the first disc is this Maiden classic with a capital 'C'. The chorusless wonder goes down a storm with the 250, 000 strong crowd. Invigorating rendition that sets the scene of the battlefield atmosphere so well.
This disc includes the live 'Brave New World' video CD-Rom enhancement.
DISC TWO:
1. 'Dream of mirrors' A multi-layered prog-metal song from 'Brave New World', this is delivered with a typical flourish from Maiden.
2. 'The clansman' Another rare Bayley-era track, nearly ten minutes long. Dickinson stretches his vocal chords again, with a passionate rendition of this song dedicated to the Scottish clans.
3. 'The evil that men do' Preceded by a suitable Dickinson introduction, this storming track is welcome, as a representative from the legendary 'Seventh son of a seventh son' album. The crowd lap it up.
4. 'Fear of the Dark' "A light in the black, or just a....fear of the dark?" Dickinson asks, before we kick into this superb Maiden live staple, with the crowd singing along to every word.
5. 'Iron Maiden' "Scream for me Bra-zil!!" is uttered for the first time by Bruce Dickinson, and the must-play Maiden 'theme' is blasted out, with typical crowd participation.
6. 'The number of the beast' With the usual 'Revelations' reading intro., this immortal track is rapturously received, with the crowd at times outsinging the now-hoarse Dickinson.
7. 'Hallowed be thy name' Simply superb. Grandiose anthem, with passion and emotion wrung out from first to last note, with the audience roaring along to the end vocals, dripping with enthusiasm and energy.
8. 'Sanctuary' A rare early Maiden track, this is another welcome change, with Maiden halting the music halfway through for Dickinson to conduct a little crowd participation. Also, listen out for some unusually feedback-drenched guitar improvisation from Smith, Murray and Gers.
9. 'Run to the hills' Finshing with possibly the most recognisable Maiden tune ever, this is a passionate Dickinson/crowd rendition of the struggle of Native Americans, ending on a sweat-drenched high. Goodnight Brazil! Goodbye Rock in Rio!
Also includes 'A day in the life' bonus feature video CD-Rom enhancement.
Alongside 'Live after death', this is a must-have updated live album for all Iron Maiden fans. I recommend it highly, and it should be freely available on e-bay or record stores at a fairly reasonable price. So long!
Advantages: Amazing live CD Disadvantages: Hard to lay your hands on in some cases
...live repertoire recorded at the rock in rio festival in front of a live audience.
The CD opens to the awesome "wicker man" and progresses through the monumental hits including "Fear of the Dark", "Run to the Hills", "Iron Miaden" and the and the epic "Hallowed be thy Name" .
The album is essentially a fundraising effort for a multiple sclerosis charity, as Maiden\'s drummer suffers from the disease, and for this effort the band should be applauded.

Advantages: The mix of songs is good. Disadvantages: Theres some of the classics missing :-( .
...It's difficult to not compare Rock In Rio to Live After Death after all, the new disc features a band 16 years older, and hopefully wiser than before their ranks began to split a bit. While it's not the perfect portrait of where Iron Maiden is in the 21st Century, hopefully it offers an insight of greater things to come.

Advantages: Fantastic Sound, wonderfully played. Disadvantages: Track listing my dissapoint
...a huge CD pile. However Rock In Rio is always on the top. There isnt anything more exciting for me than listening to the roar of 250,000 fans grow as the album begins.
....Hang on... 250,000?
Lets list a small list of facts about the amount of people in that huge crowd at that time!
- Two hundred and fifty thousand (So no extra zeros added onto the number my mistake!)
- Quarter of a million!
- Two and a half old wembley stadiums!
Rock In Rio ... ...In conclusion, I would say Rock In Rio is the live album to have. The sound is quite simply incredible. Plug yourself into some surround sound, and you can imagine yourself sweating your pints out, whilst jumping down to Brave New World and Fear of the Dark.

Album Notes
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files as well as the live video for "Brave New World" and the mini documentary "A Day In The Life." Iron Maiden: Bruce Dickinson (vocals); Dave Murray, Adrian Smith, Janick Gers (guitar); Steve Harris (bass); Nicko McBrain (drums). Additional personnel: Michael Kenney (keyboards). Recorded live at the Rock In Rio Festival, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, January 19, 2001. ROCK IN RIO finds Iron Maiden playing the 2001 edition of the Brazilian rock festival that's hosted the band since the early '80s. Recorded during the tour for BRAVE NEW WORLD, the first Bruce Dickinson-fronted record in eight years, this Maiden line-up sounds even more formidable thanks to a three-guitar attack featuring Adrian Smith, another returning alumnus. Destroying any hint of oxymoron regarding the term "thinking-man's metal," Maiden's impressive breadth of subject matter is on full display throughout this relentless 2-CD set. Delving into 20 years worth of material, the sextet delivers ripping tales of World War II fighter pilots ("Two Minutes To Midnight"), the occult ("Number Of The Beast"), medieval torture devices ("Iron Maiden"), and Native American genocide ("Run To The Hills"). Newer material draws from an equally broad range of sources. "Wicker Man" incorporates Greek mythology into its lyrics, "Ghost of The Navigator" alludes to the Flying Dutchman, and "The Mercenary" holds forth on the profits of war. With Dickinson serving as leather-lunged ringmaster, founder Steve Harris driving the pace with his thundering bass, and guitarists Smith, Dave Murray and Janick Gers weaving a latticework of guitar solos, ROCK IN RIO is vintage Iron Maiden.
Album Reviews
Q (4/02, p.114) - 3 out of 5 stars - "...God knows they whip up a furious din, Dickinson peppering his between-song banter with pantomime exhorations to 'Scream for me Brazi-i-i-l'..." CMJ (4/8/02, p.15) - "...It's Iron Maiden, with Bruce Dickinson and Adrian Smith back in the band and live...performing all the Maiden classics..."
