"Get back to where you once belonged"

I’d Call That A Bargain… The Best I’ve Ever Had.

Advantages: 9 great tracks, some classics. Success from failure.
Disadvantages: The failure cost Townsend a nervous breakdown.

The Who = music. A simple equation and one which I learnt from a very early age. Every album and single at my disposal and parents who didn’t mind it being blared out of the old National Panasonic stereogram. ‘Who’s Next’, released in 1971 to great acclaim, is widely regarded as the pinnacle of the greatest live rock ‘n’ roll bands career. The album came about after Pete Townsend, guitarist and main songwriter, failed to complete his ‘Lifehouse’ ...
...eclipsing the hugely successful ‘Tommy’ and which led to a nervous breakdown. What it also led to is a dearth of high quality material with no home. Cue ‘Who’s Next’, nine superbly performed and produced tracks While not being my favourite Who album (that honour goes to 1973s ‘Quadrophenia’) it does give a flavour of every band member at their very best, managing to capture a studio version of the live energy that saw them crowned as the worlds greatest ...

Absolute masterpiece

Advantages: Genuine lost masterpiece
Disadvantages: Taken so long to be re-released on CD

...if not the world. Air Cut. Not a dud note on the whole CD, playing at such a level that it takes your breath away and such a mix of music and styles that it dazzles. Is it Curved Air? Of COURSE it is. Kicking off with The Purple Speed Acid Queen, a straight rocker, Kirby pulls off a blinding solo and we hear what Eddie can do on keyboards. Elfin Boy is the old Sonja at her most whimsical and then comes the extraordinary Metamorphosis. Whatever ...
...fronted more incarnations of Curved Air and now has her own far more acoustic band, still touring and performing regularly. The voice remains fabulous. Kirby and Jim formed Stretch and had several albums and a hit single, and Kirby now works as a rehabilitation therapist in a famous clinic in Wiltshire and I am afraid that I do not know what happened to Jim. His drumming is just excellent here and I wish I knew more. Any help out there? Mike used ...

Tied My Baby to the Railroad Track

Advantages: A solid album of approachable, high-energy hard rock.
Disadvantages: Nothing too innovative or spectacular, but that's sort of the point.

By the release of their fifth album 'Powerage,' Australia-based, mostly-Scottish hard rock band AC/DC truly defined their famous sound for the first time, and produced the first of their classic albums that's also perhaps the least well-known. The same old issues remain of the international versions being re-mixed and re-ordered, but for the first time both versions feature the same cover art: lead guitarist Angus Young being electrocuted (by alternating ...
...glare as if daring them to play this lethal record. Despite my better judgement, this band comes next on my A-Z of album reviews and I am forced to enter. In truth, it's not that devastating, but once the album gets going there's a great energy that drives the whole thing along to its conclusion at forty minutes. The band is no longer simply playing sped-up rock 'n' roll, but continuing to define its own sound based on the other 70s hard rock acts, ...

I Know It's Over

Advantages: Great songs and great singing
Disadvantages: Still don't dig Eternal Life

...6 concerts in Jeff Buckley's Mystery White Boy tour make up this live album. My ratings are as follows: [*] - Nothing really catches the attention. [**] - Something grabs my attention. [***] - Gets me air-drumming, air-guitaring and singing along to the track. 1. Dream Brother Slow to start, and though in the buildup there is some laidback vocal improvisation, Jeff is having to squeeze hard for some of those falsetto notes. [**] 2. I Woke Up In A ...
...heavy, and the riffs dirty. [***] 3. Mojo Pin Solid but for the final bridge where Jeff slips into sheepish singing - however he does come on strongly for the finale. [**] 4. Lilac Wine As if Buckley has had too much to drink here, what with the guitar losing its way and his vocals being reduced to a croak at the end, though the improvisation in the singing is as strong as it is soulful. [***] 5. What Will You Say Similar to Dream Brother in that ...
