Advantages: Passionate debut Disadvantages: nothin' comes to mind
The first time I came across Patti Smith was on the B.B.C. 2 music show “The Old Grey Whistle Test”, I can’t remember the year but I think it was round the middle of the 70’s.
I remember she was strangely dressed for being on stage, wearing a big coat and hat on stage. I thought strange what’s all this about and then she proceeded to perform the track “Land” which is in 3 parts, horses, land of a 1,000 dances ... ...the all out assault on the senses that Ms Smith performed.
The performance that I witnessed was incredible; she was jumping up and down, throwing herself around the floor and this was for the full length of the song and runs at nearly 10 minutes long.
After watching this on T.V. I thought to myself I got to get a copy of this album, the next I preceded to my nearest “music emporium”, I asked the shop assistant if they had this title ...
Advantages: THE CLASH! Punk Rock Brilliance. Disadvantages: None
If you don't know who The Clash are, what have you been doing!?
The Clash compromises of :
Joe Strummer : Legend on vocals and guitar
Mick Jones : Talented guitarist on vocals also.
Paul Simonon : Sometimes shares vocals and bass player.
Topper Headon : Drummer (and a good drummer at that!).
This album was their second after their unbelievable self titled breakthrough. This carries on what they had already started, but improves.
1) Safe European ... ...opener and is laced with catchy guitaring and Strummer handles the vocals superb, with his scratchy bark of a vocal. It all breaks down towards the end, only to be lifted back up again. An all time Clash song which deserves to be heard by everone.
2) English Civil War : This was a single and upon first listen i didn't really click with it, although it's obvious why people find this a great song. Now i love this and the vocals are again a strong ...
Advantages: Simple Raw Street Punk Disadvantages: Nowt More Than a Nostalga Trip these Days
Sham 69 have recently shot to semi-fame again by the use of the song "If The Kids Are United" at the labor party conference. Watching all those Muppets clap along to that song as Blair made his entrance was really weird, not as weird as them performing an updated acoustic version on Newsnight very strange stuff is messing up the firmament these days. As a result of these monumental events yours truly forced himself to dig out their second album "That's ... ...street punk also known as Oi! And as they entered the studio to record this album the rumor was that they were going to do a concept album, but as guitarist Dave Parsons said it is an "Anti-Concept Album" the album was the story of the day in the life of ordinary people, so it was a fitting concept for a street punk album.
The albums highlights are "Hurry Up Harry" a classic punk rock anthem designed to get you down the pub and there is nowt wrong ...
Advantages: 70's UK punk at it's finest Disadvantages: None really I can think of
...singles to come from the Clash, White Riot and Remote
Control. White riot being an aggressive in your face punk tune and Remote Control being very much more subjude.
One of the great things about the Clash is that they never just played punk and this album is no different. There is a definate ska/reggae feel to a number of their tracks along with bits of blues riddled though out.
The guitar, bass and drums are resonably simple to play but extremely ...
Advantages: Short, sharp pop songs with romanticism for a cynical age. Disadvantages: Instrumental is a bit too long.
The perfect marriage of Punk and Pop, with Pete Shelley's superbly crafted love songs being complimented by Steve Diggle's jangling guitar work. Songs like "Get On Our Own", "You Tear Me Up" and "I Don't Mind" show that there can be such a thing as a great pop / love song that doesn't patronise the listener. The follow-up album "Love Bites" would hone and refine the 'romantic' aspect of their work, but this LP captures the Punk element of alienation ...
