Sinister Psychedelia That Burrows Under Your Skin
Advantages: Innovative, Challenging, Highly Original Disadvantages: Schizophrenic Mood Changes
"SINISTER PSYCHEDELIA THAT BURROWS UNDER YOUR SKIN"
Album: The Top
Artist: The Cure
Release Date: May 1984
*** Okay it’s tenuous link time people! My Grandad died two years ago today and in my eyes at least, he was the Tops - so I dedicate my final music review for the moment, to him. Never forget your Grandparents because you wouldn’t be here without them! ~~~ Upon its release in the spring of 1984, The Cure’s 5th studio album - “The Top” - ... ...from the music buying public. More a sinister, schizophrenic journey into the mind(s) of a troubled, yet talented young singer-songwriter than a coherent set of songs, “The Top” is, to all intents and purposes, a solo album. Scary-haired Robert Smith produces the record, plays virtually all the instruments and writes every word and note on the album; and a manful job he does too!
The background to “The Top” is worth mentioning. Smith wrote the songs ...

Lying On The Floor Of The Night Before
Advantages: A Well Produced Plethora Of Pop Disadvantages: Six Different Ways Should've Been A B-Side
...Artist: The Cure
Album: The Head On The Door (1985)
Label: Fiction After The Cure imploded in a violent and depraved mess in late 1982, few would have predicted the pop re-incarnation that 1983 would witness for Robert Smith and Lol Tolhurst. The sublime Lovecats and the summery psychedelic pop madness of The Caterpillar meant that by the time The Cure went into studios in early 1985 nobody knew which direction the band would head in. 1984’s bizarre ... ...“The Caterpillar”) and when “The Head On The Door” was released in summer 1985, no one truthfully knew what to expect from the ever changing imaginary boys. With bassist Simon Gallup back on board and new drum recruit Boris Williams joining, it was a new look Cure - with a more composed and accessible frontman at the helm - that recorded their sixth studio album. Robert Smith’s blueprint for “The Head On The Door” (which he only revealed after its ...

Smooches
Advantages: lots of different styles Disadvantages: a few weak links
This album by The Cure was released in 1987 and it sits comfortably between ‘The Head on the Door’ and ‘Disintegration’. No songs on the album totally demand your attention, but if listened to properly, the album is a journey through a wide range if emotions and scenarios. What the songs are about I do not remember very well, but Robert has on several occasions explained what he was thinking, ( mainly drugs!), so I suggest ... ...starts off with ‘The Kiss’, the first 4 minutes are instrumental and by the time Robert starts singing the lyrics, almost everything has already been said. It is a very dramatic and powerful song, mainly because of the mood portrayed by the guitar and drums. The second song is like a breather, because after the onslaught of the first song, ‘Catch’ feels like a relief and is softly sweet, if only because of its portrayal of ...

Not Goth!!! This is art rock!
Advantages: 9 art rock classics Disadvantages: er, the cover?
...- released their debut album in 1980, at the height of the indie boom. It's clear that Murphy had been aping Bowie with his vocal style, indeed critisicm of the band would be that they were no more than Bowie clones. That's essentially unfair, as this forgotten classic shows. Ash was a good guitarist in his own right, and this is as much his record as it is Murphy's.
For 2-3 years Bauhaus (named after the 1930's German art movement) were just about ... ...drumwork, leaving the listener in no doubt what to expect for the rest of this record.
Low rumbling bass opens the great piece "In The Flat Field", "I get bored, I get bored, in the flat field", howls the vocals, with more guitars again more edgier than The Edge himself. A great outro to this, echoing guitars over great fretwork
Another outstanding track "God In An Alcove" - driven along by David J and alternating between light/heavy sections, ...
