5/4 Five Piece
Advantages: Twelve tracks representing half a century of original work Disadvantages: Complex music that demands attention - no good as wallpaper sound
...A Brick which, in its original vinyl LP form came packaged with a 16-page newspaper (concept albums gave as much weight and importance to the packaging as to the actial disc and its musical contents).
Jethro Tull continues to perform and record new work and it is a bandwhose members have stayed together as a working partnership in amicability much longer than most. ...

Jethro Tulls A For Anderson Album
Advantages: A New Direction For Tull Disadvantages: A New Direction For Tull
A was initially to be Andersons solo project but when Chrysallis the bands record Label heard the demos they immediately wanted it be released under the Jethro Tull name. By this time 3 other members of the band had left since Stormwatch. For this project Eddie Jobson a great keyboardist and electric violinist was drafted in as well as American Drummer Mark Craney. Martin Barre was still there at this time too. This album was more electronic than ...

An Upper Class Rendition of Back From The Dead
Advantages: Five Indispensible Tracks Disadvantages: The Rest
After my hatchet job on "And Then There Were Three" for which I cannot apologise, I thought I best rush out another op just to show that, after that terrible album (in my opinion) there was still quite a bit of life left in the band.
"Duke" was released in 1980 and still saw the band dominated by Tony Banks' keyboards and Collins vocals, however the sense of adventure also shone through in places resulting in a patchy album which like the curate's ... ...last studio album, I was extremely wary. The first I heard of it was the single "Turn It On Again", which despite being uncommercial with it's odd time changes and excellent guitar motifs was a hit single reaching number 8 in the British charts. This tempted me into buying the album, and whilst not incredibly happy with it , at least half of the album makes for very decent listening.

Fugazi - Marillion release number two!
Advantages: Multi-faceted songs which flit between mood and tempo Disadvantages: Can be a little esoteric - so grab those dictionaries!
Right - let's get it out of the way to begin with! 'Fugazi' is a word coined by the US army during the Vietnamese war simply meaning 'all f*cked up.' Which about sums up the american involvement over there.Anyway. 'Fugazi' is the second album from the Aylesbury quintet and, unsurprisingly, sounds a more polished affair, if a little disjointed in places. It is also what is known as the second of a trilogy - the previous LP, 'Script for a Jester's ... ...the name of 'Hotel Thoughts' and then, the next long-player, 'Misplaced Childhood' being 'Home Thoughts.' Released in 1984 it only sold a third as many as their debut but contains some truly wonderful songs.
CD1 - 'Assassing' a song about the cut and thrust world of business and the cold, unemotional way in which employment is terminated. A slow build-up which leads nicely into the album as the pace quickens and Fish's words show that, if anything, ...

You Can't Have Two Killers Living In the Same Pad
Advantages: Dark Scary and Brooding Disadvantages: Not for Mass Consumption
If my prog rock history is correct then this was the 3rd VDGG album and the 2nd "proper" VDGG album, the firts was effictivley a solo album by singer Peter Hammill released to free them from a objectionable recording contract. This was also the firts album to be recorded by the classic 4 peice line up of Peter Hammil (Vocals, Accoustic Guitar), Hugh Banton (Organ, Bass Pedals), David Jaxon (Saxes, Flutes, Electronics), and Guy Evans (Drums). They ... ...Nick Potter and Robert Fripp on Electric Guitar. This album starts to focus all the classic VDGG elements existential lyrics, Jazzy drumming, rudimentary guitar riffs and really bloody scary organ solos. When other prog rock bands were doing long namby pamby solos VDGG were making scary noises with their organs during their solos, with David Jaxon also playing two saxes at once. This is immediatley apparent on the first track "Killer" an existentialist ...
