Advantages: A beautiful, haunting album. Very mournful lyrics. Disadvantages: Not an easy listen. I didn't like it immediately.
...a friend who said that Opel was the worst album he had ever heard. I think it is probably one of the best I have ever listened to. However, it takes a while to become accustomed to Syd Barrett's strange world. This is a record which will grow on you.
Opel starts off with the haunting title track, which has a wistful melody, and sparse, intense lyrics:
A bare winding carcass, stark shimmers as flies scoop up meat, an empty way... dry tears... crisp ... ...his former joy for life. Opel is a collection of tracks lost for years in EMIs vaults and made after Syd's tragic mental breakdown. It seems that the combination of drugs and pressure to deliver album success was too much for him. Unlike other casualties of the sixties counterculture, however, with the exception of Brian Wilson, Barrett portrayed his breakdown on vinyl.
The next track is a slower and to my ear superior version to Octopus than was ...
Advantages: Possibly the finest incognito musical pastiche of all Disadvantages: May, alas, be seen as a curate's egg by some
Swindon: it's more than railway museums and a mad roundabout, you know. The Everyday Story Of Smalltown For a town of its size, it's made a disproportionate contribution to popular culture. Latter-day Status Quo imitators Oasis named themselves after Swindon's swimming pool and leisure centre (can't they rename the sports complex 'Coasting Along On Former Glories That Weren't Actually That Glorious When You Think About It' in tribute? No?). The ... ...and TV presenter Mark Lamarr too. As was Justin 'Forever Autumn and all those terrible Moody Blues songs while giving Richard Clayderman his look' Hayward. And singing-and-thesping damsel Billie Piper. Like the others cited, Billie wasted little time in leaving the place when she got the chance? Why? Because Swindon has developed a reputation as a place that time forgot, oft mocked by comedians (Mr Izzard in particular) and whose glories decreased ...
Advantages: Good Intro To The Man Disadvantages: Not His Best
...this is one. Don't Slander Me was recorded in 1982 with his backing band The Aliens and the line up was:-
Rocky Erickson - lead Vocals and Guitar
Duane Aslaksen - lead Guitae
Billy Miller - Electric Auto-Harp
André Lewis - Keyboards
Jack Casady - Bass Guitar
Paul Zahl - Drums
The album is miles away from the garage psyche of the 13th Floor Elevators but due to the power of Rocky's voice it has a familiar sound to it for those of us who were ... ...that Keith Richards would have wet his pants playing and then Rocky passionately yowls through the song his vocal delivery urgent and strained, the lead guitar is absolutely superb and the sense of urgency in the song is superb. Then "Haunt" does nothing to tone down the intensity a rockabilly romp through strange territory, the tenor sax solo is really not needed though, but even genus could be affected by the 80's. "Crazy Crazy Mama" a southern ...
Advantages: 8 Great different sounding tracks Disadvantages: Always leaves you wanting more & then you have to wait for her next masterpiece album.
...her earlier stuff on The Fame album. It reminds me of a summer track, listening to it whilst just chilling on the beach. It's not as catchy as the other songs but it does bring something different to this album.
8) Teeth - To be honest when i first listened to this song i thought 'What the Hell is she doing?!?' Its hard to describe this song. It reminds me of a song that would be performed in a cabaret bar and it really is an old-fashioned number. ... ...Dangerous album. He uses old school beats and strange sounding vocals to create a unique song for Lady GaGa. After a few listens to this song i found myself clicking my fingers and tapping my feet to the beat. I'm looking forward to seeing her perform this live when i go see her in concert in 2010.
The album booklet is a simple black 14 page booklet which includes the lyrics to all the songs. There is also 3 pictures of Lady Gaga in her typical ...
Advantages: Excellent, witty lyrics with a decent range of style. Jarvis is just too cool.. Disadvantages: No real 'big hitter' of a track that you'd find on a Pulp album if your a more general listener
...of the 90's. Further Complications is Jarvis' attempt towards a more indie Brit rock album which still oozes the class of a brilliant frontman. The title track is certainly a great opener, catchy and witty which pretty much sums up the rest of the Album. 'Angela' is one of those songs that will get in your head until people end up asking you why the hell you keep saying Angela in a funny accent and who the hell she is! other examples of this raspy ... ...tracks; not the sort that will come on your iPod shuffle and you'll skip. There are more soleful elements to the album too; Discosong and Hold Still, Hold Still especially as one of those typical 'I can barely hear him but it sounds so good' Cocker songs. It's probably become obvious that I mention nearly every song as 'Solid' but this is definately where this album comes in and it does not really contain a big chart hitting song. Then again, who ...
