Advantages: Beautifully hypnotic music from the master of floating ambient piano Disadvantages: It is a very short CD indeed
Effortlessly graceful and dreamlike, Music for 3 Pianos is quintessentially Harold Budd. Admittedly his two partners in music should not be ignored but it is clearly Budd's input that is the greatest: the floating, hauntingly minimalist piano style and lyrical drift is his alone. I have nothing by either Ruben Garcia or Daniel Lentz, though Lentz has recorded on the Cold Blue Music label (as I believe did Budd briefly in the early 80s), the music ... ...CD). In many ways Music for 3 Pianos sounds like a multi-tracked album. The three pianos could often be Budd's playing overlaid on two base recordings to generate additional depth. Thus the sound of the rather short EP is one of considerable depth and it has a warmth about it that permeates the six pieces, some of which seem almost like fragments of dreamlike beauty, cascading slowly and drifting into your subconscious. 'If we can't be free, we can at least be cheap', said Frank Zappa. When you pick up a CD and the price label says £3.99, you expect it to be by some nobobdy who had one No.37 hit ten years ago. When it says Zappa on it you may as well buy it there and then. When you then look and see titles like 'Joe's Garage', 'The Torture Never Stops' and 'You are what you is' you must think that some 16 year old assistant has put the wrong sticker on it and it ... ...you buy it as a starter to get into Zappa, or as a quick addition to your bulging FZ collection, it will be the best few pounds you spend. From the Lennon voice on 'I could be a star now' to 'My guitar wants to kill your mama' it is pure quality of some of the more accessible Zappa. Used as a foil to something like The Yellow Shark is shows the genius of the most talented musician of the 20th century. ...
