Strange, Beautiful Music
Review of Director's Cut, The - Fantomas by DJWally

Advantages: Stunning interpretations of obscure and famous film scores
Disadvantages: A love of Mr Bungle or The Melvins will help you get the most out of this album.

On paper, Fantomas seem to be my ultimate band. A “Supergroup” composed of some of avant-garde rock’s leading names: Mike Patton (Faith No More, Mr Bungle), Buzz Osborne (The Melvins), Trevor Dunn (Mr Bungle) and Dave Lombardo (Slayer, Grip Inc). However, upon listening to their first album, I found it somewhat disappointing. 30 tracks of non-linear noise, sounding to all the world like Napalm Death had been asked to contribute ...
...I could appreciate, but I didn’t enjoy it. That said though, when their next album “The Directors Cut” was announced as an album of movie soundtrack covers, I was intrigued. After I got it, I was hooked again! The track listing is as follows: 01. The Godfather 02. Der Golem 03. Experiment In Terror 04. One Step Beyond 05. Night Of The Hunter 06. Cape Fear 07. Rosemary's Baby 08. The Devil Rides Out 09. Spider Baby 10. The Omen ... Read review

Just how talented can one guy be
Review of Broadway The Hard Way - Frank Zappa by welshpete

Advantages: Another Classic Zappa performance
Disadvantages: The tracks that didn't fit on the CD

Zappa. The name on a CD case should be considered a guarantee of the quality of content inside. Since discovering Frank's work through collecting everything his one-time guitarist Steve Vai's work; Zappa now hold a place in my opinion as the finest musician/composer/social commentator of the 20th Century. And this album, made up of live recordings from the 1988 world tour, is one of his finest hours. Zappa has a righteous dig at a great many groups ...
...of the time ("Sincerely Ron, we mean it!"). However the delivery of the the messages is not a rant, more a collection of finely crafted music with appropriate social commentary over the top. Play "Any Kind of Pain" to many sections of the entertainment industry and the would love it - and most probably completely miss the pop it takes at them. The musical interjections of other pieces within "Rhymin Man" show just how tight a live band can be....when ... Read review

A New Day Yesterday
Review of Stand Up [Remastered] - Jethro Tull by Zmugzy

Advantages: One of the great rock-folk albums and a timeless classic
Disadvantages: Only one or two weak moments

Stand Up was Jethro Tull's second album first released in 1969 and reached #1 in the British charts. I remember the tatty gatefold LP album bought by a friend of mine in a second-hand record shop in the early 1990s. The album cover artwork, designed by artist James Grashow, was in the style of a carved woodcut and the album opened up like a child's pop-up book, so that a cut-out of the band stood up - a kind of play on the album's title and something ...
...the one track that stops Stand Up from being a truly acclaimed classic album, but I think all great albums have the odd bad composition, even Sergeant Pepper had some pretty duff tracks. On the remastered 2001 edition four bonus tracks have been added: "Living in the Past; Driving Song; Sweet Dream and '17'". 'Living in the Past' and 'Sweet Dream' are welcome additions originally released as B-sides to single releases. The other two tracks are reasonable ... Read review

Pilgrim's masterpiece
Review of Pilgrim - Eric Clapton by jcneil

Advantages: Depth, Versatility
Disadvantages: none not enough the weird girl on the final track.

...voice in my opinion. Pilgrim marks a new direction in Eric Clapton's music with a more modern feel but still keeping that sensational guitar talent that we have come to expect from him over all styles. He experiments with new sounds and drum machines on this album but it is still unmistakably Eric Clapton. **Pilgrim** Pilgrim was released in 1998 and is co produced by Simon Climie, Pilgrim was Clapton's first studio album since 1989's Journeyman ...
...is the first track on Pilgrim that shows a harder rock side, And This track has a hip hop like beat with some superb bass licks and some superb guitar parts from Eric Clapton. A very flowing and dynamic track. 6.) "Circus" (Clapton) - 4:11 This is a very emotive track about the last day he spent with his son Conor before he died tragically the next day. There's no monumentous solos here but there sure is a guitar part that is just right and this ... Read review
