Seems more like soft rock now
Review of Maximum XS (The Essential Nazareth) - Nazareth by
grafter123
Advantages: Classics , loud, good to dance and sing to , rock
Disadvantages: Probably too old fashioned today
...on.
The Essential Nazareth, Maximum XS is a two CD offering. There are 19 tracks on each CD and I shall not list them all as that would be far too many. Here are some of my favourites and some which you may know.
RAZAMANAZ
This is a screaming opening to the CD with a fast dancing beat .
BROKEN DOWN ANGEL
More of a screech along, slow for Nazareth, song. It very much has the beat of the day though.
TURN ON YOUR RECEIVER
Another rock or pop ... ...One of my all time favourites. 'Now your messing with a, now you're messing with a Son of a Bitch'
LOVE HURTS
A wildly different version of Roy Orbison's classic. Poignant, slow, sultry and yet still screaming.
PIECE OF MY HEART
Originally recorded by Janis Joplin, and more recently by others, this rock standard stands up well.
MORNING DEW
This was a recorded pop tune of the 60's, rocked up in this version. This track motors along with a long ...

Walking with shadows
Review of Pure - Gary Numan by
docpov
Advantages: A classic rock anthem
Disadvantages: Maybe not for electric Numan fans
...year that brought us the Pure album.
During this time Gary Numan was also indulging in his love of flying, taking part in aerobic displays and his well documented round the world flight that almost ended in disaster.
In 1992 he met the girl fan he was to marry in 1997.
And so to Gary Numan’s latest offering.
Pure
And so twenty-two years after his debut Gary Numan comes back to hit the listening public squarely between the eyes with a classic.
... ...almost angry avalanche of guitars.
Pure finishes with I Can’t Breathe and we are hit by thrashing guitars mixed in with quiet piano sections. It certainly finishes the album with a bang.
The whole album is a mixture of sounds from quiet passages to thrashing guitars, in fact it is has such a range of sounds that it shouldn’t work, but it does very well.
Lyrically Numan talks about religion, mentally deranged people and I think some of the rest ...

Gary Numan Jagged 2006
Review of Jagged - Gary Numan by
fastfast
Advantages: Big and Bassy
Disadvantages: the font is awful
At around 1999, Gary Numan said that he was going to make a series of 'dark' albums and he has delivered on that promise, Sacrifice, Exile, Pure, Jagged. Each album got progressivly darker each time.
In many cases, Numan likes to write an album like a story, the first lyrics are "Here is my small black box..." which is a good indication what is going to happen, dark moody bass lines and the drum machine in the background. He has kept elements from ... ...then plenty of loud harsh rhythm kicking in for a short while. But somehow he has made this album quite a unique sound with the help of Ade Fenton.
One slight down side is that nearly every song has a atmospheric intro which, to the new Numan fan amongst you, might like but does makes all the songs sound very familiar to each other but I think Numan does this on purpose to make the album an epic, atmospheric milestone. But once the 'intro' is over ...

Review of Pleasure Principle, The [Remastered] - Gary Numan by
dave27
Advantages: Some good stuff
Disadvantages: Too many retreads
...These - the album The Pleasure Principle and the single Cars - were ready for early autumn release, and soon topped the UK album and singles charts. By that time, his hair was jet black and the records were issue under his own name; otherwise little had changed. Numan emphasised the stark, futuristic aspects by giving all the tracks one word titles (Airlane, Complex, Metal, Films, Observer).
Numan was a potent phenomenon. Harsh and simplistic though ... ...its own. His image was derived primarily from Bowie, his music from Kraftwerk, Ultravox and Eno, while a smattering of science fiction completed the persona.
By the time of The Pleasure Principle, Numan was starting to repeat the feats achieved on Replicas, but was clearly dropping into formula. ...
