The End Of One Of Music's Greatest Trilogies
Advantages: One of Dylan's Best Albums And One Of The Best Of All Time Disadvantages: None
Following on from the stellar Bringing It All Back home and Highway 61 Revisited comes this double LP, now squashed into one CD, which is probably Dylan's masterpiece of the sixties. The album builds on the blues themes of the previous album and moves into more experimental and unknown territory. This for me is one of the greatest albums ever made and many agree with me, the album itself placed 9th on the 500 best albums of all time by Rolling Stone ... ...with delays and an inability to tie tracks down, with Dylan initially recording with the Band in New York before taking on session musicians in Nashville for the final recording, which yielded the bulk of the album. The main context and inspiration from the album seems to be that of relationships, likely to be that of his with Sara Lownds after their marriage previously. But relationships and the hardships prevalent within them have always been big ...

When the Stones were still pretty boys
Advantages: Classic, young and fresh, raw, recognisable, sing and dance along Disadvantages: Too old and raw for some
Shopping after Christmas, in our City Centre's new huge Tesco, with Hubby, we decided to check out their non-food section. They seem to stock just about anything and everything. I had a couple of Tesco vouchers from some recent surveys and so decided to leave Hubby browsing the CD'S. As has always been the case I could shop the whole town and get back to any CD store or section where I had left my guy and he would still be there in seventh heaven.
... ...purchases, one of which was The Rolling Stones High Tide and Green Grass, which was a pleasant surprise for me. Out of the two of us I was the biggest fan of the Stones in my youth. Of course I have moved on but I still enjoy some of their old hits. So was it as good as I remembered?
Of course times have changed, and for many this compilation will be just too dated, but for me it still has it's appeal. Released originally in late 1966 it certainly ...

A progressive, psychedelic classic
Advantages: Music to take you on a magic carpet ride Disadvantages: Nothing (unless you hate sitars)
...wish for the whole album in instrumental form!
Anybody who already knows this album and is wondering whether to buy it again, the answer is a great big 'YES!' The new mastering makes this the best CD version so far, revealing loads of little details which were lost on the previous, rather muddy version. That, plus the amount of rarities on disc 2 make it an essential purchase for anybody who's already a Moody fan.
And if you're not, well you ought ...

THEIR PROPHESY, OUR INHERITANCE - MB4 RE-RELEASED
Advantages: One of the defining Moody Blues albums - as good as it ever was Disadvantages: None really
...Music embarked on a project to re-master the first five of the Moody Blues albums from the original tapes using modern production techniques. They also decided to issue additional tracks - alternative takes and versions - which were not included on the final album. As an avid Moody's fan, already of 40 years standing, I decided to buy all five of these new remasters even though I have the older CDs in my collection. This is the fourth of a cycle ... ...in 1969 and the first to be released on their own Threshold label - the label that still hosts their releases in the UK. Interestingly the initial Moody's releases were the odd numbers. I recollect the even numbers were assigned to emerging bands. THRESHOLD 2 was 'In the Realms of Asgaard' by 'Asgaard' (Does anyone remember that album or group now?). There was initial talk of them signing the rock outfit King Crimson.
DISC ONE: THE ALBUM

THE THRESHOLD OF THINGS TO COME - MB3 RE-RELEASED
Advantages: Foretold their development and their record label Disadvantages: Perhaps not of immediate appeal but it will draw you in
...the last that was issued on the DERAM label. It is programme music in the sense that the tracks run one into the next without a definite end. Indeed on the original vinyl LP the final strains were recorded into the run-out track so that if the stylus was not lifted the music never ended. I well remember finding myself fast asleep in the armchair under its influence.

There is also a loose thematic concept running through "Threshold". There are suggestions of the dream like quality of life with psychedelic overtones. The first few tracks start cheerfully enough but the atmosphere becomes increasingly introspective as the album proceeds. Many of the arrangements are complex and ...
