A Great Album That Is A Proud Finish For A Great Band
Advantages: Almost Everything Disadvantages: Octopus's Garden (In Parts)
...creation and the recording of Abbey Road has been well documented, with the group coming off what they saw as the failure of the Let It Be sessions. From this they decided that with the tensions within the group and the general unrest, most notably from George Harrison, they would try and create one final album that would return to some of the roots of their earlier albums, although this became somewhat subverted throughout the recording process. ... ...what is often called the Abbey Road Medley, which runs from tracks nine to sixteen. This track is great with some really nice changes and dynamics going from a slower vocal piece to a slightly more powerful narrative part and back again. This marks the beginning of what I see as the second half of the album and it is a great one to boot. 10. Sun King ***** This is a slight reflection of Here Comes The Sun and holds a few similarities to it, but as ...

Sgt Pepper - Overrated muddle
Advantages: Some absolute classics Disadvantages: Lots of filler
Let me say this right off the bat - I'm a massive Beatles fan. Not just a passive, casual, 'enjoy them in the background' sort of listener, i have all their albums, lots of books etc and enjoy them all BUT Sgt Pepper is one of the worst Beatles album - There i said it Dont get me wrong, it is dusted with greatness (A Day in the Life, She's Leaving Home), but the dusting is a little light when you compare how much filler there is on this - Good Morning, ... ...Hole - These would have been b-sides in their pomp Even some of the better songs could be classed as 'throwaway' (When im Sixty-Four, Lovely Rita Meter Maid) and whilst the production still stands up today, it doesnt have the same hynoptizing effect as im sure it did in the 60's Dont believe the hype - Buy Abbey Road/Revolver/Rubber Soul instead ...

Young Guns
Advantages: Accessible, charming music. Essential listening if you like sound. Disadvantages: It's cut and paste in style, sometimes dated, and there is filler
...until about three years ago. Revolver and Rubber Soul came to my attention last year, and I have yet to listen to Abbey Road, The White Album, or any of the early stuff. It's a jumble, essentially, is what I'm saying here. I know the songs, but not the context.
Which means I can criticise away as much as I want. Revolver has a concise format, with most of the songs knocked down to around 2-3 minutes each, with nothing particularly long. That's not ... ...Rigby' respectively, are what make Revolver worth listening to even now. If you try and ignore the nostalgia that is invariably attached to anything they did as a partnership, then you'll find some superb arrangements at play here, which are bolstered by strong, free-wheeling lyricism. The heartbreak that comes into most of McCartney's songs is in full display on the album, as is the slightly jaded cynicism that comes with a lot of Lennon's work. ...

Has it been 'A Hard Day's Night'?!
Advantages: Some of the Beatles' best love songs and a quirky album Disadvantages: It's all a bit 'samey'; if you don't like the early Beatles stuff, you won't like this
...their first motion picture ‘A Hard Day’s Night’, one thing was obvious: Lennon and McCartney would be working overtime in the recording studio compiling tracks for an album release! And indeed they were as the soundtrack to their first movie contained 13 songs, some of which were used in the movie and some which were just thrown onto the CD for the hell of it. Well, perhaps there were some other reasons for the six non-film tracks being included ... ...armchair proclaiming ‘that’s been a hard day’s night’ and that’s how the title for the movie and indeed the title song were born. It’s a cute little story but whether it’s true or not is questionable as there are reports that Lennon used to say that upon coming off stage in the bands early days in Hamburg and way before Richard Starkey joined the soon to be Fab Four.
However, it doesn’t matter where the name came from as this doesn’t stop the soundtrack ...

The Beatles (The White Album)
Advantages: A good excuse to re-discover a great album. Disadvantages: You may have bought it a couple of times before.
Having recently re-discovered this album I had forgotten just how great it is. The album contains classics such as 'Helter Skelter', 'Yer Blues', 'Happiness is a Warm Gun' and Harrison's awesome 'While my Guitar Gently Weeps'. In my opinion this is a sometimes overlooked album when the Beatles catalogue is considered and often remains a source of disagreement between fans. For me 'The White Album' remains an incredible and often ambitious piece of ... ...one of Lennon's best vocals and the instrumentation is beautiful throughout, especially McCartney's bass parts and Harrison's playing on 'While my Guitar Gently Weeps'. Despite containing a few of my least favourite Beatles songs I still find it full of inventive lyrics and interesting musical ideas. For me a genuine classic. ...
